No problem Linda - we all started somewhere! When you start it is just so exciting finding the birth certificate that you are looking for it is easy to overlook the RCE - especially when you don't know that they exist. They appear on marriage certificates too - usually when the couple have divorced but I have come across one where the bride had given an incorrect age and decided to correct it 20 years later (perhaps she was hoping to claim a pension). On death entries the RCE usually refer to cause of death i.e. accidental deaths.

thanks again folks,
how do you check the GCI and Helen I checked the Deathe for Ann looks like its not the one as it says she was a pauper who died in the poorhouse and the death was notified by the Governor of the poorhouse.
It does say shes married but not to whom father is a Robert Clark (dec) mother unknown.
Im having trouble with my printer and cant print off from the SP site so its impossible to keep track of everything Im checking out.
I did a post yesterday (which has vanished) if anyone wants to use the SP site go to a library and get the card for £6 gives you 60 credits print out your searches for that card then get another 60 credit one just means you have to use different cards each time but u still have access to prev searches saves a fortune as doing it theother way (to have access to prec searches from same assount) u only get a "top up" of 30 credits.
Hope this made sense if not let me know and hope it stays on board so u can all c it.
I will keep following up on all info from everyone and hopefully will solve this with everyones help.
Thanks to all

Linda Report 18 Oct 2010 16:13

Hi Catherine,
RIe my last post Im confused despite the details on Roberts DC on the1871 Census there is a Robert Brodie (listed as father-in-law) staying in Glasgow with James and Jane Brodie James's place of birth is Limekilns so its the correct one only thing is its says Robert was born in Haddington which is what u thought. I cant access this record . Any thoughts on this dont know which one is right.
Think Im at the brick wall again!!
Thanks

Linda,

It's a pity the death certificate for Ann Brodie doesn't register her husband's name. I'm assuming she died in Barnhill Poorhouse in Springburn where all the deaths would have been registered by the governor. It's odd that her father's name is known ... but not her spouse.

I wouldn't dismiss this death certificate yet ... keep it on the back burner meantime.

Just wondering ... do you have Ann Brodie (and/or) her husband in the 1861 census ? Would be interested to know if Ann was still alive at this time and where she or her husband were living.

Helen

Helen Report 18 Oct 2010 17:22

You mention you have James Brodie's marriage and death certificate.

Could you give his mother's name from both these certificates.

Catherine

Catherine Report 18 Oct 2010 18:46

James Brodie's mother (recorded as Ann Thomson Clark) was deceased when he married Jane Blair in 1867.

Linda I agree with Helen that the death in 1864 was probably the mother. You can search the Poorhouse records at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Robert Brodie name is incorrectly transcribed on Ancestry and he is listed as father in law. But here it is:

Roblia Brodie
Age: 58
Estimated birth year: abt 1813
Relationship: Father-in-Law
Gender: Male
Where born: Haddington, Berwickshire
Registration Number: 644/6
Registration district: Blythswood
Civil parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 18 Finlay St
Occupation: Labourer Farnister & Works
ED: 52
Household schedule number: 30
Line: 4
Roll: CSSCT1871_134
Household Members:
Name Age
James Brodie 29
Jane Brodie 29
Roblia Brodie 58
Isabella Stevenson 28

Charlotte Niven Cowan Brodie died in Airdrie in 1903.

Catherine,

Can you see either Ann Brodie or Robert Brodie on the 1861 census ?

I don't have access to Ancestry.

Catherine

Catherine Report 18 Oct 2010 19:19

Helen

I think this is Robert in 1861.

Name: Robert Brodie
Age: 45
Estimated birth year: abt 1816
Relationship: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: North Berwick, Haddington
Registration Number: 644/6
Registration district: Blythswood
Civil parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 204 Holm Street
Occupation: Traveller For Printing
ED: 12
Household schedule number: 6
Line: 15
Roll: CSSCT1861_105
Household Members:
Name Age
Sarah McConnick 30
Robert Griesson 22
Elizabeth Greerson 18
David Cruthers 17
Robert Brodie 45
Alexander Drummond 30

The last I see Ann is 1851 with the children and I think her brother. In 1861 it looks like the children are in Edinburgh as visitors (not 100%).

Helen Report 18 Oct 2010 19:26

Thanks Catherine,

I was trying to determine if Ann Brodie was still alive at this point.

She may well have been ... but living separately from Robert. (Longshot guess: Maybe under her maiden name of Clark.)

That 1861 census could be Robert Brodie ... commercial traveller .... as recorded before.

It's a pity Ancestry don't record whether the person is a Widower or Married.

Linda would have to download the original image from Scotlandspeople in order to find this information.

Unfortunately it's a costly business.

Linda

Linda Report 18 Oct 2010 23:27

Hi Helen and Catherine,
I thought I was determined but I have learned how addictive this family history is. thanks for all the help you are giving me.
James Brodies marr in St Andrews Edinburgh 1867 states his father as Robert Brodie - commercial traveller and mother as Ann Thomson Brodie MS Clark (dec)
His DC in 1889 in Moulin Perth states same parents but both are dec.
i have the census for 1861 where it shows James and Isabella in Edinburgh she was born in Sunderland England as posted earlier I have got a copy of her BC and the parents are Robert and Ann. I cant find Robert or Ann in 1861 census I still have some credits left for SP if you can think of anything I can check to help us out. Re Robert Brodie his death cert in 1885 Dunfermline Fife states his parents as James Brodie and Janet Brodie MS Purvis using this info I found their MC 24/8/1810 and his (as I thought BC in the parish of Norh Berwick on 4/4 1812.
What do yo both think am I on the right track or is it the one in Haddington that i cant find. Sorry it took me so long to reply but I was searching SP with no luck also got e-mail from the cousin in USA she got John Brodies DOB from her mums (his daughter) photo album.
I think I'm getting more confused1

Helen

Helen Report 19 Oct 2010 13:37

Linda,

My thoughts are the Robert Brodie you found born in North Berwick and the Robert who registers Haddington, Berwick on the census records are one and the same person.

Robert Brodie - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 04 APR 1812 North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland

Haddington is about 10miles from North Berwick and possibly although the baptisms were registered in the main church of the time ... in North Berwick, possibly Robert actually lived in Haddington and so puts Haddington as his place of birth on the census return.

I also think the Robert Brodie Catherine found in the 1861 census is the correct person. Same birth year and place of birth.

Don't know why his wife, Ann, is not with him. It would be interesting to see the original census image to see if Robert is calling himself a widower or still married at this time. You could download this image from Scotlandspeople if you choose ... or you could find this census image at the Mitchell Library for free. You already have the address (204 Holm St) and so, the image would be easy to find on the 1861 roll of film.

Hi Helen,
I posted a reply to you a while ago it seems to have gone walkabout I have tried to get the 1861 Census for Robert but cant find the one that Catherine found any idea where Im going wrong can you tell me what I shd enter for county/city/district I have tried Glasgow/Edinburgh and Fife Am I being really dumb here where am I going wrong? I really appreciate everyones help here I am (obviously) new to this only started 2 months ago!
Helen while I was waiting on your reply to my missing post I didnt waste time I contacted the Mitchell Library who have confirmed that it is Ann in the poorhouse!!! Over the phone could only confirm her full name is Ann Thomson Clark aged 52 years DOB 1809 from Dunfermline and that the date of application was 1861. I have asked to see the original application and am going into the Mitchell on tues 26/10 so will update you then. i cannot believe how much further forward I have got in my search thanks to everone I would never have found this on my own.

Hi Helen,
Just another update I found the 1861 Census entry eventually! Doh!!!
It gives Robert as a lodger/married/45yrs/traveller for Printing/POB Haddington North Berwick. Eurika!! Now why was poor Ann left in the poorhouse for 3 years? I am signing out now as I have to get to the shops to replenish the cupboards its like Old Mother Hubbard!
Will log in again after t time once again many thanks to all

Linda,

Your research is fairly moving on !

What a lucky find in tracing Ann in the Poor Law records. Some are more informative than others but sometimes you can find out loads of extra information that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve a good few of my own ancestors listed and have built up quite a sense of the person and their circumstances at the time.

You say you found Robert in the 1861 census … registered as married. Maybe Ann might be found in Barnhill Poorhouse (or at another address) at the time of the 1861 census registered under her maiden name of Clark.

Hopefully when you read up on her, the information may begin to explain why she went to Barnhill in the first place and why she was still there three years later. She may even have came out in the intervening years and returned there just prior to her death. This happened in the case of my own GGG Grandmother.

Helen,
Just a quick check in b4 t found ur reply. I have got 2 Ann Clarks on the 1861 Census
1st in Glasgow (cant make out the address) Ann is the head of the household, widowed, 54yrs and a silk winder POB Glasgow her niece Christina Stuart age22 also a winder is staying with her. dont think this is her as we know Robt still alive.
2nd is at 23 Renfrew St Glasgow we have

dont think these match up as the Ann in the poorhouse wa 54 when she died

Helen Report 19 Oct 2010 20:16

I agree with you. None of these census appear to be your Ann.

I've been having a look further back into your family research based on the latest information you sent on the Brodie family. I've found bits and pieces which I'm happy to post if you want.

I won't add it now just in case you want to try searching it out yourself.
