I just wanted to note that the given name Barnett and surname Shapiro were both very common in the Jewish community in England a century ago. So there will likely be numerous records for that name that are different people. |

it might not be your man, but there is a notice of change of name for a Barnett Shapiro, a textiles buyer of Maida Vale London who changed his name to Bernard Spears in 1944 |

Austria???? Well it would certainly explain any abscence on the 1911! But the family are definitely from Russia/Poland - although - another long shot - most jews left the area in the early 1900's to escape the pogroms, mainly fleeing to the UK, the US and South Africa. Maybe mine went via Austria, sstayed a couple of years and then went on to London.... anything's possible! |

And I'm guessing the informant would most likely be the spouse....if it's a Rachel then that must be the right Barnett |

Well the marriage cert would be ideal, as this would name their fathers and the addresses they were living at the time, ages etc, but at the moment you are unable to find the appropriate cert! |

Oooh, the death registration - well it was absolutely definitely 1956 but the only death I found was for one in Greenwich - I hadn't noticed the Stepney one... It could really be either of these, my uncle did say he died in a hospital but I don't suppose that helps much either... |

it might be worth a search on the sites below to see if he's buried at Rainham |

Sorry I only just noticed the Barnott Shapiro - that is promising! Because of the Yiddish used at the time a lot of the 'e' sounds were pronounced as 'o' |

Not that one, Rachel was definitely born as Cohen in 1908 - I have her on the 1911 census and am in contact with many of the grandchildren of her 9 sisters! |

I've checked Rachel Cohen's, she's buried at Rainham cemetery, someone even went there and took a foto of the stone for me but Barnett is not there unfortunately.... |
