Buy his marriage or birth certificate? That should give the necessary info, the marriage certificate will give his father's occupation.

BatMansDaughter

This is a possible for the marriage:

Marriages Dec 1873 (>99%)
Lennox Barbara Gateshead 10a 1295
Miller George Gateshead 10a 1295

There's a number of possible births, usually the case with a not so unusual name.

You could have a look on FreeBMD to see what looks likely. What else do you know about him? Have you found him on any census?

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Oct 2010 22:21

So I guess "Low Lambton" is in Durham?

I certainly would have no idea without a map and a search engine.

Where's that thread gone that asks people to at least give a *county*??

Marriage certificates give father's name only, not mother's, and father's occupation. If the party knew them, and reported them correctly.

George is a butcher and father William Wagonwright

I don't think either of these 1871 census Miller families are yours George. George born 1850 was a Stoker, a Glass maker and butcher were good occupations so why change to a stoker?

George

George Report 6 Oct 2010 22:31

Batmans Daughter

You are correct...he was a butchers apprentice at age 14.

Later he was a Stoker (Railway Fireman presumably), and later an Engine Driver

As William was a Wagonwright, could it be son following in Fathers footsteps with a Railway connection?

It;s looking like he was William the Wagon wrights son and now the birthplace tallies with the 2 census returns. 1871 and 1891.

If you do get the marriage cert in 1874 the witnesses maybe family members too.

Thanks for that.It looks like the Marriage Cert. is the next best bet rather than the Birth Cert.
