So, Alexander's father was James. I am pretty sure that the families I have found in 1891 and 1881 are Alexander's. The facts that James and Alexander have the same occupation and also that James and Sarah were in Ireland at the same time as Alexander are too much of a coincidence for it not to be the right family.
That would make this birth you found look correct:
Name: Alexander Craig Gender: Male Birth Date: 30 Jun 1866 Birthplace: CALTON,GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND Father's Name: James Craig Mother's Name: Sarah Porter Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11921-1 System Origin: Scotland-ODM Source Film Number: 6035516 Reference Number: Collection: Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
As to Alice being Dougan on the 1901, it is possibly a mistranslation, which is why I suggested that you look at census image on scotlandspeople.
I think this is James and Sarah in 1871, with Alexander's birth mistranscribed - if this Alexander is really 15 his parents would only have been 11 when he was born:
1871 Scotland Census about Alexander Craig Name: Alexander Craig Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1856 Relationship: Son Father's Name: James Craig Mother's Name: Sarah Craig Gender: Male Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire Registration Number: 644/3 Registration district: Bridgeton Civil parish: Glasgow Chalmers County: Lanarkshire Address: 9 Duncan St ED: 13 Household schedule number: 18 Line: 6 Roll: CSSCT1871_128 Household Members: Name Age James Craig 26 Sarah Craig 26 Alexander Craig 15 Mary Craig 2 Johnson Craig 3mo Jean Smith 45 - boarder There are births on the IGI for Mary and Johns(t)on with parents James Craig and Sarah Porter. There are also births for children born later who do not appear on the 1881 but there is a big gap in the 81 between Alexander and Sarah, so possibly these children died.

Dennis, it really does look like a mistranscription on the census that has Alice as a Dougan. The child Sarah Dougan is almost certainly a Craig named for Alexander's mother. You do really need to look at the original image on Scotlandspeople. From the death certificate that you have for Alice at the time of her death she was married to Alexander. From that you can take it that Alexander died after 1907. You could look for his death on SP narrowing the search by an approximate year of birth.
I had a look in the National Archives of Scotland catalogue to see if there were any details about the prisoner Alexander Craig in 1901 but no luck, there were no trial papers.

Potty has already found Alexander's wife and family in 1901 - just that Alexander is not with them. That's why she posted the census with Alexander Craig as a prisoner in 1901.

Many thanks for the additional help on this part of the family - I seached all names on GR site for those matching the census entries and send queries to any that might match - awaiting reply. I think it is likely that the age 15 in 1871 should be 5 which would make more sense and make dob more of a match.
Will add these to a graph as cross-matching information makes a bit more sense this way.
Best wishes and thanks again.

Could I ask for a lookup on 1891 and 1901 Scottish census for the following Samuel Craig
Name: Samuel Craig Father: James Craig Birth: abt 1882 - location Residence: city, Lanarkshire
He only shows up on the 1881 census under this thread but here is entry on Familysearch site of his birth. Who was he with in 1891 and 1901?
Name: Samuel Cairns Craig Gender: Male Birth Date: 11 Feb 1881 Birthplace: Calton, Glasgow, Scotland Father's Name: James Craig Father's Birthplace: Mother's Name: Sarah Porter Mother's Birthplace: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C01900-7 System Origin: Scotland-EASy Source Film Number: 232671 Reference Number: v 644-4 p 74 Collection: Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
This below may be another sister of Samuel so any information on her whereabouts from 1881 would be appreciated - it may be that she died prior to 1881 or may be located with Samuel
Name: Helen Connell Craig Gender: Female Birth Date: 06 Oct 1874 Birthplace: BRIDGETON,GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND Father's Name: James Craig Father's Birthplace: Mother's Name: Sarah Porter Mother's Birthplace: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11920-1 System Origin: Scotland-ODM Source Film Number: 6035516 Reference Number: Collection: Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950

There are is one death in 1875 for a Helen Craig in Lanarkshire on scotlandspeople and two for Samuels in 1882. None of them have MMN recorded as Porter. This doesn't necessarily mean that that isn't the MMN as not all MMNs have been indexed.
Dennis, although scotlandspeople is a pay-to-view site, it is free to search and by refining the search criteria you can find info like the above.

Hi Pam
Thanks I have taken yet another subscription and found four infant deaths so far for chuildren and James and Sarah - would have been helpful if they had put MMN as I've accessed a few records that were similar - those confirmed all had MMNs on the actual records but not on the single credit section.
Regards
