I have come across this family on familysearch.org.

Henry Oxley (c.1707) married (09/01/1732) Anne Wilkinson (c,1709)
In St. Peters, Bywell, Northumberland.

Children:
George b. 24/03/1734 (married Mary Calley 05/06/1777)
Isabel b. 30/03/1735
Henry b. 08/02/1736
Dorothy b. 25/12/1739
Philip b. 11/02/1740
Wilkinson b.26/02/1748 (married Mary Proud 1786)
Mary b. 31/01/1754
Jane b.23/04/1756

It may be that one of the above children is the father of my elusive George. It could also explain where the name Wilkinson originated, as this name is repeated throughout generations right up until the 1900s. If this is the case it would mean there were never Scottish Oxley's at all!

That's great Beverley. I must let my friend know as I think it is Mark Haldane's daughter Ann that is her direct line. That's just from memory so I will speak to her later.

I think that you will find some of those Hadane children on the 1841 census with their families. I am fairly sure that Mark is on it anyway. Remember that the 1841 is pretty well covered on Freecen.

James Haldane, b. 1815, d. date unknown.
Helen Haldane, b. 1818, d. date unknown.

Rootgatherer strikes again! Although this time it was inadvertently haha! I couldn't access NAS ONLINE due to site refurbishment but decided in my disappointment to mosey around some links. I may have unearthed two more generations of the Haldane clan. Details are very sketchy as I have no references but I will persevere! I'm so excited that it's tragic.

Beverley, looking on the Familysearch website, it doesn't look as though Margaret herself was christened in the Church of Scotland. It might be that, although married in C of S her family may have belonged to a different church. If that were the case then I am not sure that those records would be on Scotlandspeople. It may be that the older children were never christened so there are no records of their births.

The National Archives of Scotland have these records

Admin history Pre-reformation there existed an ancient chapel at Preston which was a vicarage of the Abbey of Holyrood. The chapel however was burnt down during Hertford's invasion in 1544 and was never repaired. Prestonpans parish was originally distributed into two baronies, that of Preston and of Pans, and the two, for a time after 1544, became attached to Tranent. In 1595 however the General Assembly declared Prestonpans to be a parish quoad sacra and a new church was built in 1596. The parliament of Perth, in 1606, erected the newly built church into a parish church, which was originally to be called the parish kirk of Preston. The session of Prestonpans Preston was united with the United Free Church Session of Prestonpans Grange in 1981 to form the parish of Prestonpans Prestongrange. The kirk session of Prestonpans (Preston) sat within the Presbytery of Haddington, later Haddington and Dunbar and currently of Lothian.

You could try searching the NAS online catalogue for "East Lothian Church" and that may give you an idea of any other possible churches in the area.

Since they wed in a C of S kirk, and there were a lot less restrictions on where one could wed in Scotland, I would expect any baptisms to appear in the C of S OPRs, held by SP. Since they probably wed in Margaret's parents' parish, not necessarily where they lived, they might not be in the Prestonpans OPRs.

Success! Again, I am truly grateful for everyone's help! (especially you Rootgatherer!) I have received Wilkinson Oxley's birth certificate that confirms he is the son of George Oxley and Margaret (Haldane on the marriage cert. and Halden on Wilk's birth certificate). I found the marriage on Scotland's People. There is no web reference to the earlier children at all. I know many online records are incomplete, do you think it would be worthwhile looking at Parish records in Edinburgh? They married in Prestonpans Parish Church which is just down the road. would anyone know whether they would be held at the city library? I'm sorry to be a pain!
