thorney museum's notes say that Marmaduke was a cottager and gardener in Great Towers Fen
Anyone know where that is in relation to Thorney?

,Evening Ladies, well, I went to Newborough Churchyard today & BINGO, found Thomas's grave. Ann is also buried in same grave. Not very easy to read as it really weathered. Also found grave of Isaac Sutton & wife Myret. A Richard Palmer Sutton & wife Charlotte, this one more recent, 1935., so sad as they died 4 days apart. I have taken photos of each grave if you would like them Annette. You can PM me & send me your e-mail. I am going away for a few days tom. as I have a week off work so can send pics when I get back.

I Googled Great Towers Fen, comes up with some info. It probably was a cottage in the middle of nowhere, lots of them in those days.

Morning Hilary, and Moonbi. Hilary I wished I had know you were going to Newborough, so soon. I would have asked you to look for some Turners buried in Eye. Maybe when you go that way again.

Hi Julie, no problems looking in Eye for you, might take me a few weeks. Are you after any Turners or particular ones. Away for a few days but will look in when I get back.

Ladies
using the source from A vision of Britain one can access old maps.
I looked at the earliest one "Ordnance Survey and Ordnance Survey of Scotland First Series" and closed in on the Thorney/ Eye/Newborough area using zoom and I found Great Towers Fen.

It was/is located on the road that went from Eye to Thorney.
On the left was an oblong shape tract of land just as the road came into Thorney. that land was called Great towers Fen.

Above that was Little towers Fen and to the east was Cobblers Fen and north of Cobblers Fen was Fish Fen.
This map is very interesting.
The olden days were pretty interesting heh?

Hi
havent been able to check in the last few days as things have been frantic.
Ive been thinking that I need to get the death cert for Thomas 1877
and was wondering if it would give info on his parents.

annette

Network connection to genesR is so slow to day.

Hi Annette, the English death certificates don't give parents names. It will tell you his death date, husband of etc, where he died, what cause of death & the informant. Scottish ones much more informant. Did'nt get away for a few days because of lousy weather so let me know if you want me to send you photos.

Hilary I sent a PM to you this morning. Thanking you so much for the photos of the Sutton graves in Newborough cemetery.

Thanks also to Marina, who sent a PM, your info was very helpful confirming that St Matthews is indeed the parish church in Eye.
Im so glad you had not thrown out your book by Rev Randall on the history of Eye.
William could indeed be Thomas' brother. Yet to confirm if they both had the same parents. Still waiting for reply from Northants Lookups.

best wishes to all

Hi hilary
when you went to the newborough cemetery, did you by chance see a grave for Rebecca Sutton buried in February 1847 age 19 years?
I think I have her as my ggg fathers sister
and it looks to me as if she was unmarried, yet had a daughter Susannah, buried same time as her,
both females under the same reference
