going back to the birth record of the son William I think maybe there was a miscommunication when the registrar asked what was the child's name he got the reply William Francis and mistakenly took the Francis as a christian name so the child is booked as William Francis in the christian name column and then Francis as the surname, as it was their first child they may not have realised the implication of this on the cert ,if indeed they could read , i expect the actual cert will show as this BUT he was baptised and died as William only |

another snippet that I can't see has been posted is that Sarah lists she had been married for 40 years and had 14!!! children of which only 3 still living so the child Alice on the 1901 census must have still been alive by 1911 |

Hi Shirley, I have only just come online as I have been out shopping today. I am surprised at how much you have found, I myself had five children for Alfred & Sarah and they were Sarah 1873 - Emily 1876-1884 - Mary Ann 1882 - Alice 1888 - Emily 1890 - 1891. I watched a program a few weeks ago called Who do you think you are, it is very popular here and I found out a reason a lot of children died at a very early age or in a group. Apparently it is Syphylus that the mother has or had and it starts off with miscarriages, then babies dying at birth. Sometimes it causes children to go blind. Gradually it gets out of the mother's system until she can have healthy children. I found this very sad as at the time they would not have known what the problem was. This was in the story of Kim Cantrall whose great grandfather was blind, married three times and of the children of the last wife six died in a group. The mother was not blind at birth but at three years of age and obviously she got over it to give birth to her other children and then it came back. Amazingly she lived to the ripe old age of 92 in Australia where they migrated. |
