Hi
Been doing a bit of background searching for a few days but this is a convoluted family so got a bit lost at times!

Re Frederick Edwards, first born of the Edwards children and twin of Edith Joan-he doesn't appear in the indexes on FreeBMD or Ancestry. Ancestry have the wrong GRO page up where his entry should be. I have reported it so hopefully they'll get that sorted.

What was Edith Annie Hewer's place of birth on her birth certificate as I think I may have found her with father as Ernest Cox in 1901?

Brenda Report 30 Jul 2010 12:55

Hi Julie right Frederick was Eddiths Oldest son and twin of Edith Joan I have since heard that Edith had a stepfather called Cox so her mother must have married before 1901. in 1915 she married an Edward Buckle as Edith Annie Hewer-Cox he passed in the war acording to millitary records in 1918 but why when she got with Joseph Willets does she put mothers maiden name Cox formerly Hewer on her daughter bith certificate ......she didnt marry Joseph until 1953 but told her two children by him she was scared she was comiting biggamy? now why because even though on both my fathers and his twins marrage certificate she had put under fathers name deceased and she had no idea if he was in dead dead? regards Brenda

Brenda

Brenda Report 30 Jul 2010 12:56

Eddith place of birth I'll double check with my cousin, Yes its Ullenwood

Brenda

Brenda Report 30 Jul 2010 12:57

Aslo Frederick the Eldest went by the name Willets and so are his children. I dont know if he changed it legally or not

Brenda

Brenda Report 30 Jul 2010 13:05

Ediths mothers name was Annie on her birth certificate so I dont think the Cox you found could be the right one but saying that could they have "addopted her as her mother was't married?

Brenda, can you give us the details of the death of Edward Buckle in WWI? I can't identify him at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

"why when she got with Joseph Willets does she put mothers maiden name Cox formerly Hewer on her daughter bith certificate"

If she went by her stepfather's name Cox but was born Hewer, she might have given that info, even though that's not what is usually meant by "formerly" in that situation.

If she was still married when she had the child, she would have concealed that fact *because* then the child would have *had* to be registered in her husband's surname -- that was the law. So if she was still married to Buckle, but Willets was the father, she just didn't say anything about her married name.

For appearing in the 1901 census as Cox -- there was no adoption then. But it was very, very common for children to be called by the surname of their stepfather -- even by the surname of the man their mother was living with if they weren't married. Lots and lots of children are hiding in censuses under the surname of their mother's new husband or partner. ;) But if the mother doesn't match, it might just be coincidence.

Jooleh, you didn't give the details, so I have to go look it up!! This one? The mother's name *is* Annie:

Name: Edith Cox
Age: 8
Estimated birth year: abt 1893
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Ernest
Mother's Name: Annie
Where born: Ullenwood, Gloucestershire, England

Name: Annie Cox
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Ernest
Where born: Coberley, Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Leckhampton
Ecclesiastical parish: Leckhampton
Town: Leckhampton
County/Island: Gloucestershire

Ernest Cox 27
Annie Cox 27
Edith Cox 8
Henry Cox 3

This is the one we had on p. 1 in 1901:

Name: Edith Smith
Age: 9
Estimated birth year: abt 1892
Relation: Stepdaughter
Mother's Name: Annie
Where born: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

matching the marriage of Annie Hewer to Smith.

Hmm!

For Caroline Willets dying in 1924 -- it doesn't work out.

There are possibles (all spelled Willetts):

1925 in Dudley -- born c1864
1923 in Stourbridge - born c1848
1924 in Lichfield - born c1838
1924 in Cardiff - born c1870

They're all just plain too old, aren't they? Unless Joseph and Caroline really were that old, say born 1870.

Sorry I meant Frederick was the first born Edwards & put youngest by mistake! Have edited my post to correct it.
Janey yes that's the 1901 I found-was waiting for birthplace before posting it. Before that I looked for Hewer/Cox marriage in likely area & found a Sarah Ann Hewer married an Ernest Cox in EDIT sorry Cheltenham not Lichfield. Can't post details right now as doing this on my iphone.

This one:

Marriages Jun 1897 (>99%)
Cox Ernest Harry Cheltenham 6a 792
Hewer Sarah Ann Cheltenham 6a 792

Wondered if Edith's mother Annie was actually Sarah Ann.

Julie

Jooleh Report 30 Jul 2010 23:52

That Smith/ Hewer marriage (page 1)could actually be Beazley/Hewer marriage:

Marriages 1898
Beazley Thomas Bertram Cirencester 6a 756
HEWER Annie Louise Cirencester 6a 756
PAVIER Annie Cirencester 6a 756
Smith William Cirencester 6a 756

Births Mar 1874 (>99%)
Hewer Annie Louise Cirencester 6a 366

Possible 1901:

Name: Thomas Beazley
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Louisa A
Gender: Male
Where born: West Grimstead, Wiltshire, England

Civil parish: Cirencester
Ecclesiastical parish: Cirencester
Town: Cirencester
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England

Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Beazley 27
Louisa A Beazley 27 born Cirencester
Douglas B Gloyns 19

Could this be Annie Louise with names the other way round? Can't find a Thomas Beazley marriage to a Louise/Louisa to match this census entry.

Just trying to rule her out in favour of Sarah Ann being Edith's mother.

Births Dec 1873 (>99%)

HEWER Sarah Ann Cirencester 6a 362

Just to recap:

Sarah Ann Hewer married Ernest Harry Cox in 1897 in Cheltenham.

Annie Louise Hewer married either Thomas Bertram Beazley or William Smith in 1898 in Cirencester

Brenda's grandmother:

Births Mar 1893 (>99%)
Hewer Edith Annie Cheltenham 6a 401

Annie Louise and Sarah Ann are quite possibly related anyhow but not going to muddy the waters by looking for their relationship to each other unless it becomes apparent that it would help.

Oh and the Cox's are in Leckhampton in 1901.

Sarah Ann is a ward maid in Leckhampton in 1891 - I think the image says Delaney Hospital:

Sarah A Hewer
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Ward Maid (Ward)
Gender: Female
Where born: Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Leckhampton
Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England

Registration district: Cheltenham
Sub-registration district: Charlton Kings

Household Members:
Name Age

Sarah A Hewer 17

Have edited all the other names as there were lots!

Well anyhow........*if* Edith had a stepfather named Cox, what about these two births:

Births Sep 1911 (>99%)
Cox Mary Hewer Cheltenham 6a 608
Cox Nancy Hewer Cheltenham 6a 808

Have looked at both images and I'm convinced that Mary should also be pg 808. The bottom of a 6 is almost a circle whereas the bottom of an 8 is flattened and that's what it looks like to me. Perhaps someone else could take a look??

So they could be twins?
Also Mary might be Edith's stepsister Molly?

EDIT There is also this one:

Births Jun 1913 (>99%)
Cox Lucy M Hewer Cheltenham 6a 806

Further EDIT Just found Glouestershire UKBMD free searches

COX Mary HEWER 1911 Cheltenham 27A 337
COX Nancy HEWER 1911 Cheltenham 27A 336

Their entries are consecutivee so probably twins.

I have found and Annie Coc married to an Ernest Cox in the 1901 census there is also a child Edith registered and a Henry aged 3 also my cousin has told me there is a Charles in the 1911 then we also found the Nancy regestered with mothers maiden name Hewer. So now you say there is also a Mary? Mary's were often called Molly so yes it could be and as Twins ran in my Grandmothers births also it makes sense doesnt it. Also another girl Lucy wow.My uncle is adament that Ediths Stepfather was called Cox.

Brenda

Brenda Report 2 Aug 2010 11:51

Brenda Report 2 Aug 2010 12:12

My Stepgrandfather was a lot older than my Grandmother and born I belive in 1880. I have spoken to Caoline Josephs Grandaughter by his first first wife and she has confirmed her mother, also called Caroline, was born in 1908. I t gets very very confusing as Josephs mother was Caroline..his first wfe was Caroline and so was one of his daughters,

Just a tip, Brenda -- instead of adding new messages to fix mistakes (a page only holds 14 messages and it's easier to follow fewer pages) -- use the Edit link in the corner of the message and change it. That way it's easier to see what the correct info is, too.
