Feel like an owl as I have been sitting in the dark for most of the night! We have had two power cuts in short succession - whoever said candlelight was romantic needed their heads testing!

Short visit as off to bed soon. Bet Renes and her sister have never stopped chatting.

Son has just phoned to let me know that his wife's grandma has died.....sigh...a nice old lady who was 93.

Hope your knee tweaks back into place again soon Sylvs...can you manage breakfast hopping around on one leg???

Night all.

Dea
my grand daughter is 2 1/2.
A few weeks ago in my house the hamster died.
She wanted to say hello every time she visited so we had a discussion on how to deal with it. I am not saying that this is right for every child but may give food for thought.
We decided to tell her the truth. Her other grandad has serious health problems and several times recently we feared we might lose him.
We thought that the hamster was the first stage in explaining difficult things like life and death especially with the the shadow of her grandad hanging over us. We were amazed with how well she coped.
Obviously you do not want little ones to see these things and be upset but things do happen unexpectedly in life.

I do hope your grandaughter sleeps well and you are able to help her through this.
Love and hugs for boyh of you.

Mornin everyone! - Lovely breakfast Sylvs !

LK... You are quite right, - we have always explained things very truthfully to her in the past and she has understood and accepted it.

However, this was such a traumatic scene. She suspected that some of the people would have been hurt - she suggested that some may have a broken leg? or maybe a "big gash on their leg with the blood coming out" ? (her words!) - we went along with these possibilities saying that they would take them to the hospital to look after them but trying to reassure her that most of the people were out or their cars and 'allright'ish.

You can't be 'entirely' truthful to a 5 year old faced with something like that - you have to 'soften' things a little.

Anyway, I am sure she will ask me about it all again when I pick her up from school later then I will know what she is thinking.

She will be fine!

Cynthia Report 1 Oct 2010 11:07

Glad you got sorted Gins....can't be doing with you losing things all over the place.

Dea...children are amazingly resilient at times aren't they? I think you have handled it well given the circumstances. She will know that someone has been hurt without going into too much gory detail and be reassured by your matter of factness.

I am picking up the grandchildren later and wonder what is awaiting me as their gt.grandma died last night. I know my 12 year old granddaughter has been very upset whilst her 11 year old brother has been much more matter of fact.
I always try to be 'sensitively honest' in such matters. So I can see an interesting discussion taking place on the way home!!

She was a nice old lady (93) and the last time I saw her she said to me in her broad Lancashire accent, "d'yer mind if I ask how old you are?" "Not at all", I replied. "I'm 63". She looked at me admiringly and retorted "Aye, yer bonny fer 63". I left with a huge grin on my face. That's how I will remember her!

Dea

Dea Report 1 Oct 2010 13:10

She sounds like a nice lady Cynths and she certainly reached a 'good age'.

Hope the grandchildren don't stay too upset for too long - as you say, they are remarkably resilient. At that age though, they will miss her.

Anyway, best of luck with it all.

Speak later.

My word it did not stop yesterday.

From 11.15am I had a constant stream of visitors and phone calls, last lot left at 9pm ish.
Why cant people come on seperate days?
I have just tried to change my address online at DVLA and they say that my old address does not exist? In that case how do I have it typed on my licence and they posted it to me in 2001?
Also if the police can send me a speeding ticket to my address now, as that is where the car is reg to, why cant DVLA just update your licence automatically?
Or would that be too easy?
So I now have to go to post office (5 miles away)to get a form to change the address by post.

BUT ,at least one of the visitors yesterday gave us an excellent quote for French doors and 3 new windows to rear of bungalow,so this winter we may stay a bit warmer with double glazing instead of c1960 windows..

Oh,and sparky friend put a cut off valve in my gas fire pipe so I dont have to go out in the wind and rain to turn on/off bottle of gas when I want to use it.
Still nagging him to feel well enough to install last 2 storage heaters though.
One small step at a time I guess.

I thought the word ..Bonny.. was used when people didnt feel that the word.. beautiful ...would fit the person /baby in question..:)
