	When you say her Mum was unknown...are you meaning there was no Mums name on her birth cert Was her Dads name on there

	The names of her parents will be on the birth cert You could, of course, look on freebmd for a marriage between Coates and Hayter

	The probable birth cert gives the mothers surname as Marshall Births Mar 1916 (>99%) Coates Dorothy M Marshall Barrow F 8e 123

	If this is her birth them Mums maiden name is show as Marshall Births Mar 1916 (>99%) Coates Dorothy M Marshall Barrow F 8e 1238

	There is no marriage to fit the birth - it's entirely possible that the mother had been married before - there was a War on. You really do need the birth cert...................
