Janet McAuslan born Helensburgh, Row, Dnb. married John Stirling, a stonemason, at Row, Dnb. 30 April 1832. There was one child from this marriage, Catherine Stirling b.c. 1832 (my great-grandmother).
John Stirling died at Helensburgh, Row, Dnb. 14 January 1834. In his Testament (SC65/34/3) proved at Dumbarton Sheriff Court 17 March 1835 it was revealed that he had three further children, William b.c. 1815, Margaret and John. Janet his wife and Catherine were also named in the document.
From the Statutory Register death certificate for William, died 18 June 1869, Row, Dnb., stonemason, his mother was noted as Margaret Govan. I have not been able to find either parish mariage listings for John Stirling/Margaret Govan or the birth of William, Margaret or John.
In the 1841 Census for Row, living in Clyde Street, there is a listing for Janet Stirling, 45, Washers Lodging(?), born in county, Catherine Stirling, 9, born in county, and Alexander McAuslan, 54, fisherman, born in county.
The 1851 Census for Helensburgh shows Janet Stirling living at Stirlings Land, Clyde Street, head, 42, seamstress, born Helensburgh, Dnb. Her daughter Catherine had now left home and was domiciled in Barony, Glasgow.
I have been trying to track down the birth of Janet Stirling nee McAuslan and her parents and have been able to narrow it to 2 possibilities :- 1. Janet b. 6 April 1807, parents Archibald McAuslan & Isabel Cohran. 2. Janet b. 16 September 1814, parents Alexander McCaslan & Mary McFarlane.
I have not been able to find any listings for these two Janet's in the Death Registers under either McAuslan/McCaslan or Stirling/Sterling. All the other Janet's born in Helensburgh, Dnb. in the relative time frame have been accounted for by using the Statutory Death Registers.
If a widow married in Scotland during the tiime period 1834 onwards would she marry under her widowed name or maiden name ?
Any responses or suggestions made to assist me to overcome my many problems listed above would be most welcome.
Ian, Aust.

Thank you dajean. Even though the answer is not definite I thought it possible that the two situations could apply. Just makes my search a little harder. Regards, Ian

In Scotland when a woman remarries it is more common for ALL her previous surnames to be listed. Same on death certificates, provided the informant knows. So for example Jane Smith marries Mr. Brown, he dies and when she marries again to a Mr Green, her name will be Jane Smith or Brown on the marriage and on her death her name will be Jane Green married to (1) Brown and (2) Green and her father's name will tell you her maiden surname. If she made a will her name on it would be Jane Green or Smith or Brown.
Her death (if after 1855) will be indexed by all the surnames given on her death certificate by the informant.

You could look for a poor relief record at the Mitchell Library,Glasgow, incase he made a claim when his first wife died.He would have stated the children .Likely in Row area as his work would be there ,and his second marriage was there.

Thank you Ellen for your quick response.
I am sorry but the Janet dau. of Robert McCaslan & Elizabeth Gay is not the wife of John Stirling. This Janet married John McKinlay at Row, 11 June 1822 and died at Garelochead, Row, 26 February 1875, (Info. from Stat. Death 503/00 0044).
I don't think that John Stirling was born at Row c. 1801 as that would have made him only 14 when his son William was born to John's first wife Margaret Govan. William's age derived from the Stat. Death cert. 1869 indicates a birth c.1815.
The Alexander boarding with Janet Stirling and dau. Catherine in the 1841 census, given that his age is correct at 54, is more than likely the son of John McCaslan and Kathrine McLeod b. 17 August 1787.
I tend to not believe the age of Janet shown in the 1841 census and think that the 1851 census age is more likely. Who provided the info. and was it mis-transcribed ?
In order to arrive at the two possible Janet candidates to find the one more likely to have married John Stirling, I charted the McAuslan/McCaslan marriages and births, which I had extracted from the Row Parish Records for the period 1760 to 1850. I then endeavoured to eliminate them one at a time by cross-referencing to the Stat. Deaths on Scotlands People and eventually settled on the two I could not find as the two most likely.
My real problem now is that they either died prior to, moved out of the Row area or re-married after the 1851 census.
Once again thank you for your endeavours. Ian

Ellen. Thank you for your suggestion of a Poor Relief Record. Unfortunately I am not able to research at Glasgow without a 10 thousand mile trip. I think it would be unlikely as the family appeared to be comfortable according to John's Testament in 1835. I am also aware of the range of records for Row, having perused the Parish and Kirk Session records on LDS Film extensively. Regards, Ian
