Hi Vera,
No - I don't think that is William K. Nichols. I think going by the number of years married it is more likely to be the couple from this marriage:-
Name: William Nichols Year of Registration: 1890 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Leeds (1837-1929) County: Yorkshire - West Riding Volume: 9b Page: 602
Also on the page is Jane Fenton
On the 1901 census this family has William mistranscribed as Walter (but the image definitely says William - and he is a Cloth Dresser.

Kath, As you can gather I am confused....think I had better give it a rest for today. I found that one where Walter should be William . Regards Vera

I think we'll have to leave it to Frances to buy Marie's birth certificate - although I'm pretty sure in my own mind that her parents will be William Frederic Nichols and Jane Booth.

I have to admit to being a bit short on patience when the answer seems so close but birth certificates take time to obtain.

I wonder if this is Marie's marriage:-
Name: Marie E Nichols Spouse: George A. Gray Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1929 Registration district: Leeds North Registration county (inferred): Yorkshire- West Riding Volume Number: 9b Page Number: 599
If so this could be her death:-
Name: Marie Elizabeth Gray Birth Date: 23 Dec 1902 Death Registration Month/Year: Dec 1995 Age at death (estimated): 93 Registration district: Bradford Inferred County: Yorkshire Register number: C57A District and Subdistrict: 0811C Entry number: 199
Perhaps Frances knows whether this is the right person.

Hi Kath and Vera, I thought you had both called it a day after I had agreed to get the granddaughter of Marie Elizabeth and George Gray (yes, you were correct on her marriage) to get the birth certificate - though she doesn't know yet!

I have been looking again at all the evidence and whilst waiting for a birth certificate I am pretty certain that Marie Elizabeth's mother is Jane Booth. Births Dec 1873 Booth Jane Leeds 9b 470
looks to be the only one that matches but in the 1881 she has already left home! 1881 Census Henry GOZZARD Head M Male 39 Leeds, York, England Bricklayer Clara GOZZARD Wife M Female 37 Gornal, Stafford, England (Lower Gornal is next to Dudley) Jane BOOTH Niece Female 7 Leeds, York, England Scholar Dwelling: 6 East Grove Street, Leeds, Yorkshire
Playing with the name combinations I have reached
Marriages Dec 1867 Gozzard Henry Leeds 9b 480
Ward Clara Leeds 9b 480
Marriages Jun 1866 BOOTH Nathaniel Kirkstall 9b 356
Ward Mary Kirkstall 9b 356
Births Dec 1845 Booth Nathaniel Halifax 22 230

I think you are right Frances.
The only confusion really was that the 1911 census had William transcribed as William K. instead of what was actually on the image which Vera said was William F.

I've just been loking for Nathaniel and Mary from your other thread.
If someone can check this census for Clara Ward you should be able to find if she had a sister Mary.
Clara Ward name, name abt 1843 city, Staffordshire, England relation city, Yorkshire

There is Births Jun 1846 Ward Mary Dudley 18 395
but Clara does not show up as such, only Births Dec 1842 Ward Female Dudley 18 307
The 1851 census for them as sisters would possibly be convincing proof and hopefully provide their parents?

Sorry Mary, I must have been posting overlapping yours. This family is trying very hard to be difficult! I have had a look at the map and Sedgley is not very far fron Gornal (see 1881 above for Clara) and Registration District is Dudley so Births Mar 1841 Ward Mary Ann Dudley 18 326
could well be the match. As both 'sisters' got married in Leeds perhaps the whole family migrated north from Nether Hoyland after '61 - just need the 1866 census to prove this lol

EDIT a tree on Ancestry with this family has, James Ward 1815 married Mary Ann Gough had 10 or more kids including Mary Ann and Clara BUT they have Mary Ann 1841 West Bromwich Staffs married to George Crump in Rotherham 1861 and had 9/10 kids between 1862 and 1885. 1871 they were in Hoyland district 9 47,the same area as James 1815 and Mary Ann 1816 were at D9 67 Hoyland

Hi Frances, thats what I thought about the birth place of Mary Ann. I can't confirm what I wrote as I copied the info off the tree. Maybe the owner of the tree has the wrong Mary Ann,but there again they are living in the same area as Clara's parents in 1871.
I'll have a look at other census for Mary Ann Crump and see what it says for place of birth.
Maryb In 1881 says mary Ann Crump born West Brom 1891 mary Ann Crump Dudley 1901 Mary Ann Bromyard Herefordshire 1911 Mary Ann Crump married 49 years born 1841 Dudley they are at 9,Andover Street Sheffield. So this looks to me as the same Mary Ann who is sister of Clara who were in Nether Hoyland.
