re marriage of Hugh's parents Joseph Evans and Ellen Owen - have searched between 1840 and 1860 on single names, but not able to match one record with each other. Lots of marriages for each name, but none coincide!! Thought if I could get marriage I may be able to get ages of parents and so help search on census.
Maybe a fresh start tomorrow is a good idea?
Thanks again to everyone who is offering help.

I have compared the 1871 census with John Jones 1794 a ships carpenter
Upper Quay St district 1 image 18
Ellen Evans 1823

1861 John Jones 1794 Shipwright
Upper Quay Street D1 Image 18
with him is daughter Ellen Jones born 1832 notice the difference in given age, it says unmarried but where it should say daughter it has been written over married.

No Elizabeth 1857 with them, but it is the same family as on 1871.

There was a Ellen Jones marrying Richard Owen J/A/S in Anglesay 1856.
Could Ellen Jones have married Owen then got together with Joseph Evans.

Hi Louise,

A bit of a breakthrough maybe?

Marriage 14th August 1846 at Amlwch Anglesey

Joseph Evans (Mariner) Fathers name Richard Evans (Mariner) OVER 21

Ellinor Owens Father John Owens OVER 21

Both resident in Amlwch Port

Someone did me a favour in the record office, but had put the register away and I did not like to ask for further info re Witnesses. What they did say was that this is the ONLY marriage between a Joseph Evans and Ellen/Ellinor Owen/s

This may be them as Ellen/Elllin/Ellinor interlink......Ellinor being her full name which would have been used in this instance.

These are extracted births for children of a Joseph Evans and Ellen/Ellinor

No Hugh......as the extraction only up to 1858 another pointer they may be the same family are their names......after possible Granfathers?

The only problem with that ,is that Louise insists Ellen was born @ 1837 according to family onfo.

Please could we have that info louise.

Hi Mary,

Yes I understand that, but not sure where Louise got her info from? However going along the lines that they were both born Anglesey and married there, this is the only Joseph Evans who married a Ellinor/Ellen Owens.

In fact there were only 2 Joseph Evans marriages on the Island aound that time frame, this one a one to a Jones.
Something is not right somewhere, however I think the info on the marriage and the extracted births are the same family....but is it louises family???

Hi Ann,
Yes the Ellen Jones to Joseph in 1851,so that would fit with the 1871 census Ellen with dad John Jones 1794 Elizabeth 1857 and Hugh 1862.

She is down as single with her dad on 1861 but I think that is an error, but at least her age in 1861 is more in line with the age Louise thinks Ellen was.

hi

Found 1871 census for Hugh which Mary has already found and look correct right age and mother etc

Ellen Evans married age 48 Mariners wife born 1823
Elisabeth born 1857 Amlwch Anglesey Wales
Hugh born 1862 " " "

there is a John Jones who seems to living in same house but he is a widower age 77 and a ships carpenter so they could have been lodging with him or it is a mistake on ancestry's part and he should have been put seperately.
Father Joseph must have been away as he was a mariner and there were two other woman who were on the own on the census below Ellen and their husbands were mariners

1881
Hugh Evans born 1862 Amlwch Wales unmarried age 19 A B Seaman on board a ship named HERO

Hope this helps

Hi Ann,

Yes we have that info further up the thread which Mary supplied, not sure if Mary uses Ancestry, but on FMP I am sure there was a definate strike between the Jones Widow and the Evans family indicating two dwellings...will take a closer look, they are not coming up on transcript though.

I would think that they are almost all mariners around that area because they told me at the record office that most addresses saying just Amlwch indicate the Port area. Well done with the ship name find!

Good grief, thank you so much to everyone for this help. Sorry i have not replied earlier, but I own a pub and the work can be pretty much 24/7 and this is the first chance I have had to return to the site. I usually get on twice a week, if I am lucky!!
Going to follow all of this up.
One thought of my own is that if Ellen was born in 1823 then Hugh was a very late birth and as such pretty unusual.
Will order the wedding certificate and that should give an indication of ages (unless they lied!!).
Thank you once again for all your help. I shall keep checking, even if I cannot check daily.
Kind regards
Louise

Hello Louise,

Not to worry, you have the info now, where did you get the 1837 DOB from?

Ellen would only be about 39/40 so not uncommon in the days of nil contraception!!

if you ring Anglesey record office they will send you a copy of the church registrar entry for the marriage 1846, may be cheaper than a GRO cert, also with a bit of luck more clues should there be witness names also.

happy hunting

A very very belated thank you to all further info supplied here. Also a very sincere apology but family matters have kept me away - until now!!
This family has been hard work, but I finally think I have made some progress, with help from the information that has been supplied from Ann and Mary in particular.
The stangest thing is that on Ancestry I have put in a search on 1891 census using the names of Margaret and, individually, the names of her 3 children who were born by then, but it still does not come up with a match. Luckily, for me, the information has been supplied on this thread. I am hoping to go to Amlwch registry office at some point this year (!!) and glean further information.
Thank you once again for so much help, it is so appreciated.
Kind regards
Louise
