hi Somerset girl, remember me jacqui, looking to find Bridget Hanly, who gave birth to my mother Mary Hanly in 1942?
well although I never found bridget her self but we have managed to find some info on her - she married a Brenden O'Callaghan in 1950, they had 4 children Mary, Bernadett, Patricia and Hilda who was born in 1957. They lived in Dublin last known address is 68 Clifden Rd. Ballyfermot Dublin. back in 1957.
me and my husband Kevin went to Ireland in Sept and through some very nice people we managed to find Bridgets eldest brother James Hanly who had 3 daughter one of whom we met called Mary Hanly now Grenham and she lives in Ballinasloe, she was very nice but had no additional info for us as she and her sisters never met Bridget or her children. I was now wondering if you have any ideas how to find Bridgets children? there is also a possibility that they moved to England. Any suggestions welcomed.

my mum did this back in the 60s and managed to trace Irish relatives.

You wouldn't need to be too specific on who you are, just ask if anyone has information on the family?

Does anyone know how to find living relatvies (looking to find Bridget Hanly) and to see if she may have had any children that could be my Mothers Brothers & Sisters or if Bridget had any Brothers & Sisters that could by my mothers Aunties & Uncles.?

I really want to find where Bridget is now (for my mum who would love to know) if her mother was still alive or if she (my mum) had any other brothers and Sisters.

Hi Somerset girl, I have a reply now from timeline researchers. there are 4 pages plus a birth cert so I will try to shorten it:-
Bridget Hanly (more likely to be correct one) was born 29.09.1920 at Creevy (this is the address in my mothers letter)
she is the Daughter of Martin Hanly (farmer) and his wife Mary Hanly (formerly Taaffe)
additional info:
in 1900 lot no.8 was occupied by Michael Hanly Jnr. who leased a house, offices 26.1.08 acres of land from Captain Charles Stopford. In 1904 Occupation of the landholding was transferred from Michael Hanly to his representatives indicating that Michael had died. and in 1905 the next recored occupier became Martin Hanly (Michaels son) until 1942 when he died. Martins wife Mary Hanly took over the property in 1948 where she remained at creevyquin until 1961. when she probably died and the holding was transfed to Martin Conroy?

Where do we go from here now? any ideas.
ps they have supplied me with a photo copy of the birth cert for Bridget.

the reason why I said that she may have used a false name is that, back then in Ireland it was shameful to have a child out of wedlock, and so the unmarried mothers were sent to convents to have there babies, but always used a false name so that when the babies were fostered or adopted the mothers could not be traced, and hence bring more shame on the family? but I do not know if this rule also applied to birth certs? or only the register in the convents?

But like you said I should wait for the cancelled books for more info.

Yeah I am glad i just wish i could find something more concrete to be able to tell my mum that I have found her mother would be the most wonderful thing I could ever do for her, as she often wonders why she was given up, and what the situation was like for her mother you know all the unanswerd question.

anyway just received the Marriage cert for Bridget Hanly 1943, and this doesn't look like the right on either.
details are:

his farther is William Connolly Farmer
and Brigid farther is John Hanley Farmer
married in the church of Rooskey

so another dead end. Maybe My grandmother never got married? may be the name on my mothers birth cert for Bridget is a false one as many girls back then oftern had to use false names?

I have sent an email to the Achives section telling them the story of my mother and the address given on her Baptisim cert. But I does say that it my take 5 -10 days to get a reply.

not sure the genealogist will tell me as she charges €140.00 for her service.

Ok - so I should order the marriage cert of Delia and Luke, yeah. so that we can see how old they are?and who there parents are? yeah - ok will do.

and I will order the birth cert for brother luke hanly.

How do I go about looking at the cancelled books? what is the web site do you know?

Just to let you know that I sent off for the other Marriage cert but as yet it has not arrived.

i have asked a Geneologist what would be the best way of going about this to make sure we have right Bridget Hanly her is what she suggest? please read it and let me know what you think, and can we do this between us?

Thank you for your email and I apologise for the delay of my response.

The only concrete information that you have is that Mary Hanly was born on 28th March 1942 in the County Home of Roscommon the daughter of Bridget Hanly a domestic from Cloonyquin. At the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon Bridget Hanly's address was given as Creevy.

The addresses given by Bridget Hanly at the time of her daughter's birth might be the best clue to her origins. There were two townlands called Creevy in Co. Roscommon. Creevy, located in the civil parish of Tibohine and Creevyquin in the civil parish of Kilteevan. The townland of Cloonyquin is located in the civil parish of Fuerty.

A search of the 1911 census, has identified a Hanly family residing in the townland of Creevyquin. This makes this the best option for tracing the family of Bridget Hanly.

I would recommend that we search the Cancelled Books, which were rate books that recorded the ratepayer for each household in Ireland up to 1970, for the townlands of Creevy, Creevyquin and Cloonyquin for references to a Hanly family at one of these addresses. If we locate a Hanly family at one of these addresses, we can assume that Bridget was a child of this family.

We can then search the civil birth register for Bridget Hanly born between
1912 and 1926 (when she would have been aged between 16 and 30) to a father with the same name as the head of the household at the address given. If we can find a Bridget Hanly born at Creevy, Creevyquin or Cloonyquin, we can be much more certain that this was your grandmother, as the address is consistent with that given on your mother's birth records.

Although we try to recommend research that is likely to produce a successful outcome, in your case, I cannot be certain that we will find the households we are looking for at the addresses given, however, this is the best recommendation that I can make.

I have now located my mother Baptism Cert. from the Sacred Heart Hospital, and they will send it on to on Tuesday, :) this is great news as it should contain more info.
The Marriage cert of Bridget, hasnt arrived yet but should come next week.
