Find Ancestors

I am trying to confirm which William todman is my pedigree. I have his name from sons marriage in 1843, but can not find records to confirm where they came from. 1841 shows them resident in Steep but not born in County. I can not trace sons birth or any record of who his mother is. Have been on IGI but am guessing too much. Anyone any ideas ??
William Todman born abt 1790, son, John Todman born abt 1813. John married 3 times, 2 sons and 1 daughter.
Any ideas ??

Found a marriage on 10/09/1843 between John Todman aged 30 batchelor and Mary Ann Bridden Spinster aged 28 at St Andrews Church Holborn. John is a coachman.
Grooms father William Todman farmer of Tavistock Square
Brides father Joseph Briddon a coachmaker of Golver Street
Could this be his first marriage?

Had to come off last night, Yes John married mary Ann Briddon, then Thirza White and then Sarah Huggins.
My relative Walter Geo was from his 1st marriage along with older brother Samuel. Darah was born from 2nd marriage.
I have 1st marriage cert, gives fathers name- William, what I am trying to discover is which William Todman of that period is Johns father, who the mother is and whether there are any siblings ?
I have John living in Steep 1841 census with William presuming his father and Sarah ?? sister, but this is guess work that they are the right family ??
How do I trace back further ?? Confirm Johns parentage ??

This was his 1st marriage, it shows William as farmer, I think the William I found on 1841 census is wrong, shows him as shoemaker/cordwainer. This is in Steep, Hampshire, There is a farmer in East Grinstead 1841 but his name is John not William ? I just cant work out how to trace prior to 1841. Also can find no death reg for William Todman, wondering if he was actually John William and called son John ?? As I say all guess work

Yep got his son John traced, which is where I got Williams name from.
He is listed as a Farmer on Johns marriage cert, 1841 cnsus gives a William, John and Sarah in Hampshire but William is a Shoemaker on that one, could he become a farmer in 2 years ?? And can not trace any mother ??

Yes 1881 cencus is correct that ann posted.
John had 2 sons Samuel and Walter by Mary an Briddon and daughter Sarah Susan by 2nd wife Thirza White. He then married Elizabeth Huggins.
1851 John is living with Mary ann and 1st son Samuel at Palace garden mews

My bet is these are your Johns parents,and please note the name Samuel in there to help my case..

William is an AG LAB.

Farm worker.

Farmer sounds better that Ag lab on your cert,many did and do that for elevation of status.

Although I didnt need to do that when I married as my Father is a farmer and does own it himself....Ha.

I wondered if the witnesses on the first marriage would help .... ie, sister or brother.

I found that as well on IGI, just not sure as 1841 census shows John and sarah as williams children, no sign of samuel ?? but then 1841 census shows him as shoemaker not agricultral !! I think I need to go to records office see if I can get confirmation on this.
My dad was Farmer too !!!!

you are right witnesses appear to be friends not rellies. last marriage to Elizabeth Huggins doesnt show up on london records either so only bmd info on that, was hoping to find last marriage may give me more info on his siblings

Mind you thats only cos I had to give her some lessons in finding the right Welsh family earlier...:))



So why is the William and Dinah 1841 one not on exactly then?

Surely John may have left home by then if he was a coachman?
