Find Ancestors

If any one needs help with Woolwich area I have quite a bit of information, books, parish records etc. I also have Charlton St Lukes Burial book , and some of their parish records, also Bexley St Marys and St Johns. Books also include Records of Woolwich, by Thomas Vincent.

I have been trying unsuccessfully for years to find the death of my GtGtGrandfather, Thomas Cook. He was born in 1810 at Woolwich / Plumstead and he and his wife Mary (Martin) married in 1831. (Edit sorry, Thomas doh!) Thomas was alive in 1871 but I have not pinned him down positively since that census. Mary died in 1889.

If you have any records that might show Thomas' death I shall be indebted to you. Thomas worked for years at the Arsenal and he was apparently noted as a firework maker. I understand he may have retired from there but what he did afterward I have no idea!

Anything you can find for Thomas will truly be a bonus.

William? So have you found Thomas on the census 1871?
That will definitely be a starting point

Thomas and Mary look as if they lived at 3 Essenden(?) Lane, Plunstead, in 1871. Thomas is noted as Foreman at the Arsenal.

Have found a death of a Thomas Cook in Greenwich 1881
Qtr JFM 1d 639, born circa 1810. The only way to be sure is to order the death cert.
He was pensioned from the Arsenal (from the 1861 census)
Have had a quick look at the family and they where all Firework makers. John, Samuel and James.Will have a look tomorrow, as its late now.

If this is the correct one and he was still living in the Parish of St. Nicholas the only burying ground would have been Charlton Cemetary, as Woolwich didnt open until 1884 and Plumstead 1890. I only have the burial register up until 1859 for St Nichs.and he wasnt buried in St Marys, I have checked.
Where was Mary living when she died? have you a record of this?

Acton, I believe. Let me check her death certificate. I have a family picture about mid 1880s (no definitive date) where Mary is present but no Thomas.

Added: In July 1889 Mary died at Acton (where her daughter lived). She is 'wife of Thomas Cook firework Maker'. Is it significant she is not noted 'widow'?

Another daughter was the death informant. Perhaps this daughter did not think to say if she may have been a widow.

Anne, thanks for your kind offer. It would be useful for me because some of my descendants were from Woolwich/Plumstead. My late grandmother was born in Woolwich.

However, her mother (my great grandmother), Gertrude Allen Rutherford was fostered in 1889 by James and Mary Rutherford. I have their censuses from 1890 in Plumstead, 1901 (Rook) in Woolwich and 1911 in Woolwich. I am unable to find her birth registration. In the censuses, 1891, her birth of place was Lambeth and 1901 was Woolwich and 1911 was unknown.

Her birth of date was 21 Dec 1888, according to her baptism record from the UK ancestry and her biological parents were John and Margaret Allen from 1 Rush Grove (could be close to the Arsenal).

Could you please find out if John Allen worked in the Arsenal? I would hope to get information about him and Margaret.

Also maybe there would have school records of Gertrude to see where she was born ?

Gertrude Rutherford was married to George Baker in 1914 at The Register Office in Woolwich. George was a soldier. Gertrude was laundress (perhaps in the Arsenal).

Do you have marriage records?
George Edward Scott and Isabel Mary Friday married inthe Woolwich area in Jun Q 1904.
Their children were both born in Willesden - I've only found two.
George and Isabel were both born out of the area, in Kent.

Helllo ,

I have tried for months to find information about a leeson family
who i have on a 1911 census at 12 Daniels road Nunhead Camberwell.
On this Census it says they were married. for 5years found one marriage in 1908 wrong marriage.
But we assume not now they could not have been married
So we thought perhaps they could have married after 1911 .
Noticed on free bmds woolwich also covered Camberwell John leeson was born 1865 in shorditch. and mary 1871 no surname.
Only birth we found is for john,
Any suggestions please

Ann Dallas was buried in St Mary Magdalene church Woolwich 5th March 1837. Aged 41 and residing before her death at New Road Woolwich.

I have a James Dallas baptised Sept 1832 to a John and Margaret Dallas?
Sarah Ann Dallas born 10th April 1832 baptised March 19th 1833 at St Mary Magdalene, Father James mother Sarah living at Church Street Woolwich. Fathers occupation Bootmaker
James John Dallas born 9th Sept 1835 and baptised 25th Septemberr 1836 at St Mary Magdalene Father James mother Sarah residing New Road, and a bootmaker

I wouldnt attach any significance to her status, as in many cases when the spouse has been dead for more than a few years its sometimes ommited.
Did you know that Mary was buried at Acton August 3rd 1889.

For finding the burial place for Ann Dallas. She is my 3xgt grandmother originally from Scotland. If I’m ever down near Woolwich, I’ll go and visit St Mary Magdalene church.
