Does anyone have a Captain Robert Davies of Mostyn in their family history. Born around 1802 in Amlwch, Anglesey and died in Mostyn in 1882. His wife was Margaret Davies nee Owen. His son Robert Davies's trustees donated money to build The Robert Davies Memorial Hall in Mostyn around the 1920's.
Does this ring a bell?

As we always say, the odds of anyone for whom this rings a bell seeing your message are slim to nil. ;)

If you are looking for particular info -- his descendants, ancestors? -- various of us unrelated helpful other members might be able to help, if you say what info it is.

Hi LadyKira
I had found the same one in 1851 and this is the right family

Linda

Linda Report 27 Apr 2010 01:25

Hi LadyKira
I agree I don't feel this is the right one as I had found them in 1841 on HO 107/1407/26 page 25

Linda Report 27 Apr 2010 01:27

Hi Ladykira
Thanks for the web site, that's my bolg with my uncle and a new found relation. We are trying to find out more about the mysterious Robert Davies, son of Captain Robert Davies.
I have found him in the 1881 census as a visitor and it says he was born in 1843, so he missed the 1841 census and all the others until 1881.
He was shipped off to boarding school presumably before the 1851 census, he went to Ellesmere College and Liverpool College apparently.
I guess the school would have recorded the students on the census nights so how do you find them? Can you or anyone help?
Thanks
Linda

Hello Jane
Yes I know the odds are against me finding a relation, but you never know unless you try I guess.
At present I am just looking for descendants because there are lots of gaps.
Have a look at one of my replies to LadyKira as to what help I am looking for.
In the 1881 census Robert was with a Benjamin Littler and his wife Mary and Benjamin turns up again in 1882 with Robert in some Probate records for the Captain, so I thought, OK Littler is a little more unusual so maybe he lodged with them earlier but I had no luck finding them in earlier census's. He is a mystery but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

Thanks
Linda

Well, speaking of odds and unusuals - my grandmother was a Littler. ;)

I've noticed these Wales Littlers in the past. Mine are Leicestershire, presumed to be from the common Cheshire root, but still with the missing link.

1881 in Rhuddlan, Flintshire

Benjamin Littler 60 - born Holywell, miller & merchant
Mary Littler 68
C. Littler Buckingham 5
Elizabeth A. Roberts 23
Hannah Jones 25
Robert Davies 38 - born Mostyn, shipowner

There are Littlers in the censuses born in Mostyn in the 1860s. And yet no Littlers *in* Mostyn. Benjamin Littler and family were in Greenfield in 1851. I assume that's not far off?

There is a Benjamin in Manchester in 1891 born 1863 in Mostyn. Son/grson of Benjamin 1821? And there are other possible children.

There are also women who are Littlers by marriage who were born in Mostyn, whose husbands weren't , interestingly.

Benjamin is a miller in Uchglan Cwm in 1841 and is in Greenfield with his family in 1851. But nowhere in 1861 and 1871.

Yeah, here we are, the dreaded mistranscription hit them in both 61 and 71.

1861 Abergele
Benjamin Sittler 38
Mary Sittler 44
Emma Blinestone 20
(daughter Mary from 1851 not present)

1871 Ryl
Benjamin Sittler 48
Mary Sittler 56
Mary Jane Sittler 32
Ellen Williams 23
Mary Williams 20
Owen Williams 23

Phew. But no Robert Davies present.
