Liz,
I couldn't find the 1901 marriage but have found the 1907 marriage where Janet is listed as Janet McPhedran Langham marrying William Alfred Haines.
Have drawn a blank looking for further marriages for Janet as well as her death. In the process I did however find the death of a baby Henry Kent Langham in 1902, age 0. Also found the death of a Henry Langham in 1904 aged 83. Not sure if this is Janet's first husband but it would fit the dates (he'd be a bit old however).
Sorry I couldn't be of much help Danielle-Marie

Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my Grandfather Edmund Rileys' War Records it very much appreciated. All I had seen was a copy image of the medal card you attached, on Ancestry one time when they allowed free access to the military Records, I had not been able to find anything else. So was quite overwhelmed by what you found.
May I ask if you would also be able to look and see if you could find any WW1 Records for my Grandfathers' half Brother Peter Cross b, 1886 Colne, Lancashire. I do not know for certain whether he did go to WWI or not. but would imagine as Edmund had gone he would have too. He was, married around 1912 and had a few sons who fought in WW2. I do not know when he died but it would have been sometime after WW2. There is no hurry, search at your convienence. Once again thanking you so much. Regards Josephine New Zealand

Hi Danielle-Marie Would it be at all possible to find out where my mother went when she left the Union Workhouse in Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne. Her name was Jeanie Oliver born 1893 in Gateshead. In the 1901 census she was in the Workhouse with her mother Janet born1858 in Scotland and her bother Arthur Askew Oliver born1887 in Gateshead. In this census they had put Jeanie down as John. I think her and Arthur may have been moved to a cottage home for children at Ponteland but cannot be sure on this. In the 1911 census I find her working as a scullery maid at Whalton Manor in Northumberland. I also know that she married a Mark Hedley in 1913. Is it at all possible for you to fill in the gaps for me, or am I asking to much. I would dearly like to know her movements from when she left the Workhouse, how she came to work at the Manor and how it was possible for her to meet Mark Hedley. If you can possibly help I would be very grateful. John

Could I ask the usual of you please Danielle?
Would you edit your opening post to add a prominent request that people who have their own threads about a question not put it in your thread - and vice versa?
Doing that is against the rule about not submitting the same material more than once, and in the past there has been much time wasted and much frustration when people have done this.
Thanks!

John,
To be perfectly honest John I'm really not sure where to start with your request. Like you my first port of call was the census records just to see the facts for myself. After that I was stumped. I've tried doing a general name search as well as the manor name search in google but have drawn up nothing of any use. She may just have been lucky in meeting Mark Headley and then later marrying him. He may have been a manor guest, a fellow servant or simply a local she met whilst running errands. As to how she went from the workhouse to the manor I really have no idea and won't waste your time by pretending I do. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Danielle x

Josephine,
After all the luck with Edmund Riley's records I had no such luck with Peter Cross. There are numerous Peter Cross's with service records and medal cards but no strong identification markers to suggest that any of them may be your Peter. None of them were in the same regiment as Edmund so that ruled that one out and as far as I could fathom none came from the same area.
Sorry Danielle

Margaret,
I too have tried in vain. I've searched both freebmd, ancestry and the igi index to try and find Bridget's birth record and found absolutely nothing. Sorry Danielle xx

To illustrate the problem here: John has two threads of his own in April about Mark Hedley:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1215793
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1213898
that I see on a quick search ...
This is so unfair to everyone, and appears to be an unavoidable problem with these "lookup" threads. How much more straightforward if people looking start their own threads, and people who want to help, help in those threads ...

Dear Danielle, I appreciate you taking the time to search the military records for Peter Cross. While disappointing that I have not been able to remove any bricks from this Brick wall. I am most delighted with what you found for Edmund Riley my Grandfather And following on from that I have just found that I can access his WW2 records here in New Zealand where he served as a Training Officer. On presenting proof of his death. Am glad you put your thread up regardless of Janey's negative comments. Once again many thanks. Josephine

You're all more than welcome for the help / information I have provided.
Janey: I don't understand what you are wanting me to do. I have added in my introduction a polite note for people not to post twice but can't really do anything else.
Danielle-Marie xx

"Records Office If you are visiting a records office and are happy to do a lookup on behalf of other members please post a message here Also if you would like a fellow member to look up information please post your requests."
Don't worry Danielle, your post falls within the remit of the Records office. It is very generous of you to offer your services.
Just out of interest (I have no connection to Hull as far as I know) but what do the Hull shipping records include? I wonder if similar records may be held across the UK for other areas.
Many thanks

Hi Secret Red Squirrel,
I just posted my thread in the same place as I had before to be honest. As long as it's in a place that is useful to people I'm not too bothered :). Thanks for moving it.
The shipping records I can access are just those via that hull council and museums website. They're quite basic and just list ships name and major crew members. I do however intend to visit the new Hull records centre frequently during the summer to look up shipping records for my own search so will be able to look up those for others while I'm there.
I'm not sure how the rest of the country organise their shipping records I just stumbled across the Hull ones by chance. In fact most of the sites I have found has been purely by chance.
Regards Danielle
