Does anyone have access to the 1851 Dublin Census (substitute) who would be willing to look up Andrew McNab (or poss mis-spelt MacNab)
No idea what level of detail it would include but he was born in Dundee Scotland about 1830/33. His middle name was 'Aedie' in case that's included.
He was in the army so possibly stationed at Richmond Barracks Dublin.
Many thanks if anyone can help!

Thanks Jonesey. I know that to my sorrow as one half of my family tree comes from Ireland but I understand there is a census substitute, for Dublin specifically, in 1851-available on CD so wondered if anyone had it.

Kath - thank you! Haven't had much luck with my McNabs on family search up to now. I have him on the 1841 census aged 7 and the 1861 aged 29 but I think he lied about his age when leaving the army to join the police force in 1852 because he said he was 22. His daughter was born Dublin 1851 and I think his regiment/battalion was stationed there so just trying to tie up a loose end..

How did you find him Kath? Just done a basic search for that birth and it's not showing. I wonder if I'm not using the site to it's full extent?
Thanks

Thanks Eringobragh. That's all of them apart from Margaret Young Mcnab.
I can see they all appear when searching on the parent's names but I still can't find Andrew by just searching on him alone.

Well that's really interesting........ I have them in 1841 which of course doesn't give their relationship to each other (Marjory is elsewhere):
1841 Scotland Census about Andrew Macnab Name: Andrew Macnab [Andrew McNab] Age: 7 Estimated birth year: abt 1834 Gender: Male Where born: Angus, Scotland Civil parish: Monifieth County: Angus Address: B Ferry Fort Hill Cottage 1 Parish Number: 310 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Ander Macnab 39 Margaret Macnab 32 Thoe Duel Macnab 9 Andrew Macnab 7 Margaret Macnab 4 Euphemie Young Macnab 3 Margaret Young Macnab 1 Mrs. Milward 60 Mrs. Min Macnab 36 Grace More 19 See there are 2 Margaret McNabs.I assumed the 4 year old belonged to Mrs Min McNab.
The children's grandfather was Thomas Dick (famousish in his day) an astronomer and writer. I have found a lot on him by googling. One of the articles I found was a letter he wrote saying that his daughter and her husband (Margaret Dick and Andrew McNab) died within 13 days of each other in 1843 leaving him with 5 grandchildren to take care of. I assumed therefore that Margaret was one of them.
I believe (but none of this is verified) that Thomas Dick was married at least 3 times. First wife was Elizabeth Aedie hence Andrew's middle name. Second wife was Euphemia Young hence the two youngest middle names. Again giving me reason to think Margaret was their daughter.
I also did free searches on Scotlands People using their names and their parents to get a match but since you posted that I've gone back to Margaret & can't get a match so perhaps I didn't check her out when I did the others. Intriguing... I'll have to take a fresh look.
Thank you!

You posted again whilst I was typing! Well I assume the transcriber for Ancestry made an error and put Young instead of Dick - can't access the images for Scotland on Ancestry.
As for the marriages - I'll have to absorb that.......
Thanks

Jooleh...
It appears there are 2 McNabb (Variations) and Dick families .... The Marriages are distinct... 1 Dundee 2 Monifieth.
Are you certain yours are the "Monifieth ones"..? If so then the Thomas Dick you mention is living in Cottage No 3 on the 1841 Census..(next door to Andrew and Margaret) ...his occupation "Literary Avocation"
I cannot explain the W-WA McNabb for Margaret's Birth entry...most likely a transcription error..also below...(1841 Census)
There is only 1 Margaret (Child) aged 1 listed ..the other is "Marjory" aged 4

Hi Jooleh, I found Andrew's birth on www.familysearch.org
Andrew's parents marriage.
ANDREW MCNAB Pedigree Male Family

The banns were also read in Monifieth, Angus, so either Andrew or Margaret came from there.
Kind Regards Kath

Hi Again, Margaret Young McNab is the daughter of Thomas Mcnab & Martha Young Downie. The Thomas is on your post with the 1841 Census, listed as Thoe Duel Macnab. A brother of Andrew Aedie McNab.

Hi Eringobragh - yes I'm 100% certain of that family and yes Thomas Dick living next door (with a very mixed bunch of people!). You must be seeing a different transcript to me. Does it definitely say 'Marjory' aged 4? I did wonder about that previously but then I found a Marjory in another household & thought she was visiting elsewhere (well that's what my notes say-it was some time ago).
I got Thomas Dick's & Andrew Aedie McNab's wills from Scotlands People - it was great finding those! There's also one for Andrew's father and Thomas Dick son of Thomas Dick but it was starting to get expensive & I felt I had gleaned a lot from other two anyway.
Thanks for your interest and input

Hi Kath
I surmised it was familysearch you were using but I just can't seem to pull up the same records. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to do something in advanced search or pilot records or something like that?
Thomas Dick McNab went to Australia sometime prior to 1852 (when he married there). He posted some very useful obituaries for his brother and grandfather in the Sydney Morning Herald! I can't see him being the father of Margaret Young Mcnab as she was born 1834, maybe her father Thomas McNab was Andrew senior's brother?
Thanks for all your help

Thank you - especially if you are using your SP credits for me! So 'Ancestry' have Marjory (Margery) mistranscribed as Margaret.
Strange though that Margaret aged 1 has middle name 'Young' when her birth record says it's 'Dick'. Perhaps they couldn't remember what names they'd given - they haven't included 'Aedie' for Andrew.
I found Margaret and Euphemia in a charitable school in Edinburgh in 1851 so I'll go and dig them out of my shoebox and see if they had middle names then............
Julie
EDIT They are together in John Watsons Institute aged 11 & 13 but no middle names.
