I'm stuck with just one strand of the family: my gg grandmother. Maud Baker (b. 05.10.1887 (in Deptford according to the 1911 census)) is a mystery until she got married to Joseph Davi(e)s in 1907. D.O.B. is on death record but I can't match her on Free BMD or get birth cert. Her father, Robert, was a taxi driver. She married Albert Woodhead in 1959 when Joseph Davis died. There are connections with Kent, London and Keighley, West Yorkshire. Any clues? I need to find her birth so I can trace her parents.

You need to start with her marriage certificate, which will state her father's name -- if she knew it, and if she reported it correctly.
This birth matches the Maud in the 1891 census, but the only way to know whether she's yours is to match the father's name to the one on the mrge cert.
Births Jun 1885 Baker Maud Primrose Greenwich 1d 994
Deptford was in Greenwich registration district.
... Nope. That is the only Maud Primrose Baker birth in the index, and this looks like her marriage:
Marriages Mar 1907 BAKER Maud Primrose Poplar 1c 878 ENRIGHT Monica Poplar 1c 878 Horlick Charles Henry Poplar 1c 878 O'Keeffe John Poplar 1c 878
-- she married Charles Horlick; they're together in Greenwich in 1911.

Thanks all. That's good work, and correct about the marriage to Joseph, but I've kind of already been down that path and it turns out to be no real help unfortunately.
I requested the birth cert of the most likely Maud with the proviso that the father's name was Robert (that's what it says on the marriage cert with Joseph Davis). But it wasn't.
It's frustrating to have the date of birth but not be able to find her birth record.
She may not have been born Maud of course. And Deptford (on the 1911 census) might be a red herring. Family has also mentioned Hayes in Middlesex as a place she lived.
Tantalisingly, parish birth records show a Sarah Baker (Maud's sister?) with parents Robert and Charlotte in 1897. This Robert is a cab driver. On Maud's marriage cert in 1959 it says her father's called Robert and he's a taxi driver. This Robert and Charlotte do seem to have also had a daughter called Maud, but she's not there on the 1901 census at age 13-ish and I can't find a death.
I feel like I'm missing some crucial clever thought that will lead me to the answer! It's driving me mad. I'm in contact with her grandson who lived with her for a while but he has no memory of anything. Even her mother's first name would help but no, he knows nothing. Perhaps I could have him hypnotised...
Thanks for looking the stuff up chaps, but I fear I may need Hercule Poirot on this one.

Just a tip - it would have been nice to know those various tidbits from the outset. The marriage certificate details, of course. And also the 1901 census possibility, since match looks quite good and it would have been useful for pondering/searching for Maud's whereabouts.
It's really quite frustrating to have spent time searching and learn there was info available but not disclosed.

So for info, this is the potential household in 1891?
Name: Maude Baker Age: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1888 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Robert Mother's Name: Charlotte Where born: Middlesex, England Civil parish: Acton Town: Acton County/Island: Middlesex Registration district: Brentford
Robert Baker 24 - bricklayer Charlotte Baker 24 Maude Baker 3
and in 1901
Name: Roberta Baker [Robert A Baker] Age: 35 Estimated birth year: abt 1866 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Charlotte Where born: Ealing, Middlesex, England Civil parish: Acton
Roberta Baker 35 - labourer Charlotte Baker 34 John H Baker 9 Sarah E Baker 4
Ah. You're the one who has corrected the transcription. Dang.
No cab driver though?
That couple would be this marriage:
Marriages Sep 1886 > Baker Robert Allam Brentford > HUCKELL Charlotte Brentford SAVILL George James Brentford Sutton Mary Brentford 3a 132

Thanks Janey. That's the household that looks sort of likely, very likely even, and yet could be completely wrong. If only the earlier Maud hadn't vanished. I'm sorry I didn't tell you enough to start with. There is another lone Maud in 1901 in a workhouse, but I can't think of any reason why she would be there if her family are alive. I appreciate your efforts. Finding Maud in 1901 is probably the key to this.

Maud Woodhead (previously Davis, nee Baker) died in 1970 in Keighley. Don't know the exact date but it doesn't really matter at this stage I don't think.

The age is out but I think this is that Maud.
1901
Name: Maud A Baker Age: 17 Estimated birth year: abt 1884 Relation: Granddaughter >>> Where born: Britford, Middlesex, England [Brentford, of course]
Name: John Baker Age: 60 Estimated birth year: abt 1841 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Emma >>> Where born: Brentford, Middlesex, England Civil parish: Stainforth Town: Stainforth >>> County/Island: Yorkshire
John Baker 60 Emma Baker 60 Maud A Baker 17 Ada Baker 15
And I'm thinking she is indeed a good candidate.

I think it's the year of birth on the death cert that is out -- not an uncommon occurrence for people born pre 1900.
- edit - also, checking back, I see that 1884 would have made her a good bit older than her first husband (on the hypothesis she was), and women often dissembled in that situation.
Births Mar 1884 Baker Maud Amy Brentford 3a 115
This does leave the problem of the parents' marriage being apparently after that birth -- but in 1884 they would have been 17ish - ?

Ah. I didn't know that. Might get the death cert then.
The IGI thing is interesting too, certainly. Especially if the DOB is wrong on the death record.
Could it be so far out though I wonder...
Thanks

Does the marriage cert say if her father was deceased?
