Thanks LK,
I have found a John Smith , cabinet maker, on the 1841 census living at Owen's Square, New George Street, with his mother Elizabeth.
Curiously, living next door is Sarah Lankester, with her mother.
I have a marriage cert which I think is George's parents, and they are John Smith and Sarah Lankester.
If this is John, I have found his mother's name. Yippee.

Dea,
On the 1861 census , living at 53 New George Street is John and Sarah Smith with their 7 children. There is a George but he is only 2 years old !!!
John is a cabinet maker too !!
Strange .

Thanks everyone,
Smiths are a headache !!!!!!
One of the birth certs I have has 53 New George Street Hull as the address, so I think I'll have to concentrate on that one.

I'll start on other branches next - Williams, Robert and Jones from Wales.
Aaaaarrrggghhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Families, don't you just love them ?

Dea Report 5 Apr 2010 16:45

Thanks LK,

This is VERY complicated,

We really need to follow through one of those John's to 1861 and find him as a 'sail maker'

I suppose your 'sailor' is a good candidate but also the 'joiner' who I found could have been responsible for making the mast parts of the sails??

There is a LOT of work to do here!!

I have no idea where the Whitehouse comes from , but it has been passed down through the generations. I thought it might have comne through the female line, maybe a maiden name , but no joy yet.

The first marriage uses name Whitehouse to Ann

We have a Geoge Smith who is a cooper and A George Smith who is a barrelmaker living on the same street . George Whitehouse is first a blacksmith.

I just love Smiths.
