CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 5 Apr 2010 08:19

Looking for possbile places to look for an adoption.

My grandmother Marjorice May was believed to of had a child by a US GI in ww2.. ..I'd guess about 1942/43 as this was the time when the 1st GI's were arriving (USAF ?). Plus she was married in 1945 to my grandfather...so it was certainly before than.

I'm lead to believe the child's name was Colin. He was then adopted... again...I believe by the father and taken back to the US.

Any ideas on where I might start looking for records of such?.

Cheers in Advance
Paul

Have you looked for his birth? If he was adopted there will be a change of ref number next to the old number.
Only the person who was adopted can access the details

Have you checked for him on this site to see if another member has him on their tree?

Hi Quinsgran,

I have been looking...but can't find any reference to a Colin May.
I assume he was born in Reading, Berkshire..as thats where Marjorie was born & lived.

I don't have any dates to go on as such....just an aprox time of when he may have been born...

HI Susan,

Most interesting find.....

Marjorie was married in 1945..and so had the child before that time...but exactly when..i do not know.

Being the father was an american..I assume he was a GI...or possible belonging to the US Airforce..as they were here before the GI's who had come for D-Day.
The USAF was in England in 1942/3...so I assume he was born something between...42 & 44...probably 43
An that it was in the Reading area...as thats where Marjorie lived..and was about 20 in 1943..so probably..not moved to far from home.

She was a Bus Conductress (clippy) and so..probably meet the Amercian on the bus..

If the mother of the Colin you found Susan was a Marjorie..we might be onto a winner..! :)

Hi Boogie

It is a possible then,I think a lot of American pilots did go over to the UK before they offically joined the war effort.

Are you able to ask Marjorie ? is she or your grandfather still alive.

There is also this one

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about Colin E Parsons
Name: Colin E Parsons
Mother's Maiden Surname: May
Date of Registration: Oct Nov Dec 1944
Registration district: Reading
Registration county: Hampshire, Berkshire
Volume Number: 2c
Page Number: 643

There are a few marriages that fit the above in the Uk in the area but no marriages for a Colin c May in the area.

You could always order the birth cert for Colin C May,to know for sure.

Hi Susan

1st US air raids from the UK were in 1942..although small...6 bombers..
But the Americans were here in the UK between 42/43.

Im afraid I can't ask any of my grandparents.. I never meet any of them on either side of the family....I didn't even know theirs names until a year & a half ago.

This story comes via my mother's half sister...but she didn't know anything more than what i have posted here.

Can't ask my mum..as both my parents have passed away also....

Yes..there were Amercians here in 1940/41.
They flew for the RAF to get experience..though it was against US law for them to do so.

They flew in what was known as "The Eagle Squadron"..a few did fly in the Battle of Britian..

The first American to give his life in the Battle of Britain was Pilot Officer William M.L. Fiske of No. 601 Squadron. Fiske was a graduate of Cambridge University and a leading personality in the American bob sleigh teams that won the Olympic championships in 1928 and 1932. He died in hospital on 17 August 1940 after bringing back his damaged Hurricane to Tangmere.

I am very keen on avaition..especailly ww2...and have been running a website dedicated to a US pilot for 10 years!!.
Major. George E Preddy Jr.

He was shot down and killed by his own side on Xmas Day 1944.

Heres my website.

But to have a relation being a US pilot would be just crazy!!....lol

What relation would he be to me? ..as he had a child with my grandmother..half grandfather?...lol

Hi Susan,

I just wanted to let you know that I have now recieved the birth cert... yesterday! (after ordering on the 5th)...man that was a wait.

AND!.....its is the birth cert of my grans illegitimate child Colin.

Unfortunatley....it does not contain details of the father....name etc...bummer!

A real shame..I was getting so excited!.
But it does prove the story of the fling with the GI was true...or at least the fling part...lol....whether or not it was a Gi t ..has yet to be solved..but it's a start.

Cheers for your input.

Paul
