Thanks Gillian, possible that the son followed the father into the trade so definately worth following up. Thanks

The marriage you found in Poplar was on 6/5/1838 not 1836
The groom James Foulger was a Carman by occupation and the "minor" means that he was under 21 at the time. The father was definitely a draper but would have to have been born around 1795 and much too old for Felicie's birth

As suggested by Victoria I've contacted the Drapers Company to see if they have a James Henry Foulger listed and am waiting to hear back. Also I've found a marriage cert for a James Foulger and Isabella Resetta Bailie. James father is named as James and I think his occupation says draper. Its dated 6th May 1836. James jnr is shown as a miner on his marriage cert. Given that it would mean he was around 60 at the time of Felecie's birth but I guess that's not so impossible. The marriage took place at Poplar All Saints. If anyone has the time could you look to see if I'm transcribing the father's occupation correctly.
On the subject of the "Rogers" posting, I do hope that something like that won't put people off searching for information for others Novices like me would be completely lost with out your help and even tho I've not found Felecie at least I know I'm covering routes I'd never have though about thanks to suggestions from you guys. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates the time and effort you put into answering questions from idiots like me. Again thanks a lot for helping me and if anyone does come up with anything new pls let me know.

Victoria, sorry it is 100% RUSHTON STREET in Hoxton. My mistake. I'm not convinced of anything on this marriage cert, least of all James Henry's occupation but contacting the Drapers Company is a great idea. Thanks for the link

HI

you are still confusing me with Hoxton Street and Rushton Street

you said HOXTON St is the address given on the marriage cert, but when you wrote out what was written for Felecia you said RUSTON St.

From the list of Streets I posted before , Hoxton and Rushton Streets are 2 separate Streets.

If you are convinced that the occupation of James Henry Foulger is Master Draper then it maybe worth contacting the Drapers Company and see if they have any record of him

Victoria, I also thought cloth dumper was a rag man but according to the archive office it was also a term used in clothing factories for someone who used some sort of wooden paddle for stretching cloth! I agree your more likely to be right and it would explain his excuses for losing his papers. 42 Hoxton Street comes from the address given as residence at time of marriage for both Felecie and my Grandfather. Again the archivist explained that often couples used one address as it was cheaper even if they were living at different addresses.
The marriage cert reads as follows
31/1/1922 Felecie Foulger 21 yrs Spinster, Telephonist, 42 Rushton Street, Father James Henry Foulger (deceased) Master Draper.
Having said that Grandfather's father is shown as a Ladies Outfiter and he is always shown as a warehouse man!
You could be right about James Henry jnr standing in for her father - I'll send off for his marriage cert and see what it says about him.
Also agree with 42 Rushton St being shared house. I know one thing, the deeper I dig the more confused I get! Thanks S

I've found a Thomas and James Foulger on the City and Counties Directory on Ancestry. They are shown as running a Tailors at 12 High Street, Marylebone in 1846 I can find Thomas on Census through to 1901 but can't find James - Any suggestions anyone?

Vicci Report 22 Apr 2010 22:57

Having has another look at James Henry's military record and am wondering if we are misreading his occupation.

It actually looks more like Cloth Dumper. (ie rag man), this would tie in with his excuse as to how he lost his discharge papers!

can you have another look at it and also the marriage certificate of Felecia to see what if that has been misinterpreted as well.

I am also wondering if James Henry jnr stood in for Felecia's father at the wedding and his details have been incorrectly entered on the marriage certificate.

James Henry apparently married Ann Lye in 1920 so it maybe worth getting his marriage certificate.

I can find no connection with the other people living at 42 Rushton Street, New North Street, Hoxton in the 1922 electoral roll. If you look at the 1911 census for that house you will find 3 separate families. I believe this house is split into 3 residences.

In regards to the 1922 electoral roll, are there any more details on James, eg age, occupation??

Can you also remind where the reference to 42 HOXTON street comes from?

Thanks Victoria. I have been in contact with the tree owner (Peter) about this. He has a whole Foulger website but no Felecie anywhere and none of the James Henrys ever show draper as their occupation. Strange James Henry (jnr) shows his occupation as Draper after he left the army. I knew most of the other info and am trying to see if any of the Foulger sisters give me any clues.
Maryb - on James Henry's enlistment papers he shows his next of kin as James HENRY and Florence Foulger of 42 Hoxton Street. Although I agree this is the only time James snr is refered to as James Henry in any record. Achivist at Shoreditch library tends to agree that 42 Hoxton Street may have been house of multiple occupancy but the records can't confirm this Can you tell me where you found James J Foulger listed as Draper, it has to be worth looking into. I have been contacted by someone who is the Grandaughterdaughter of one of Grandfather Ernest's sister. She has two aunts that remember my Grandfather and she's going to ask if they remember anything at all about Felecie. One other thing. I know that you can't view census after 1911 on line but does anyone know if they are available to the public at the records office. Thanks again for all of you helping. I'll get there in the end!
