Thanks RG. I'm ploughing my way through Irish marriages. Found one for Alexander Pratt in 1863 in Fermanagh Ireland.

Big problem is I do not know how to search for the spouse. She does not come up on the information. I used the LDS labs site to find the info.

About to try Seymour Cameron everywhere.

A couple of options.

Look on Scotlandspeople for the marriages of Alexander (the Apprentice Engineer)'s siblings to see what maiden surname they give for the mother.

Look on Scotlandspeople for the death of Alexander (the Millwright). If the informant knew the details they will have stated any or all of his wives. Janet may have been a second wife?

AuntySherlock Report 10 Apr 2010 08:26

Ok lets use Aunty's Weird Calculation of Events.
Alexander P (1) was born in 1796
married around 1835
Alexander P (2) was born in 1840 - mother Jane Glass

Alexander P (2) married in 1860 - spouse ??Cameron Seymour

Alexander P (3) born around 1860-1871 his mother's name would have been ??Cameron Seymour.

Alexander P (3) married in 1891 to Sophia Hewitt.

Now if Alexander (3) was born c1860 he would have been quite able to have a wife before Sophia. By 1891 was was in his 30s.

I am wondering if the fine for wife desertion was levied on behalf of his first wife. It was levied before the 1891 date of his marriage (I hope). Haven't got that web site open.

So in the time frame of Aunty's weird calculations. Jane Glass could well have been your Alexander's great or great great grandma.

Now you have to work it out and prove I have it all wrong. I will go look for a marriage between Cameron Seymour and Alexander No (2) I think.

Whoops left of Alexander's occupation as stated on the marriage certificate he was an engineer

Okay here we go,
Groom Alexander Cameron Pratt
Status Bachelor
Place of Birth Scotland
Age Full
Usual Residence Sydney
Father Alexander Pratt
Occupation Architect
Mother Seymour Cameron

Bride Sophie Hewitt
Status Spinster
Place of Birth London
Occupation Not Stated
Age Full
Usual Residence Sydney
Father Henry Hewitt
Occupation Stone Mason
Mother Martha Perrin

Date of Marriage 30 July 1891
Place of Marriage Holy Trinity Church Macdonaldtown, District of
Newtown NSW.
Religion Church of England
Witnesses AR. P H Dalrymple, Edward Simpson
Minister F M Dalrymple

So I would think the witnesses are not going to help us to much One I would think being the Ministers wife perhaps
As I mentioned at the beginning they had their children then went and got married. Did he have a previous marriage that may be why it was so late in happening, but if he is the Alexander Pratt in the Sydney paper for desertion of his wife the marriage certainly didn't survive to long after the ceremony

I think we need to find information about Seymour Cameron. So far the only one I have found was Harriet Seymour Cameron in Australia. This could be a relative, or someone not connected at all. Need to do a bit more searching. Don't discount the Glass angle at this stage. The problem is there are many Alexander Pratt names to choose from both in England and Scotland.

On the marriage certificate to Sophia please tell me exactly what it says including the names of any witnesses. Have you found that marriage in a database.

The rule with this is to work from what you know and can prove. In this case it is a marriage certificate.

Hi Aunty Sherlock, I have looked at the information on the census and marriage of Alex to Janet Glass but it doesn't explain why on the marriage certificate to Sophia Hewitt he names his mother Seymour Cameron, have you any thoughts on that

Amanda in that post I have given you a link. Highlight, copy and then paste the link into your address bar, click enter.

All that information is there. It is from newspaper articles. I have no idea where Station 3 is. I gather it is probably a police station in his area. It might be possible to search the topic more through newspaper articles.

Here is the link

Hi Aunty Sherlock and Rootgatherer Can you tell me where you found the information on the wife desertion if it is him it would explain why he has been so hard to find probably didn't like parting with his money.
What year was that and does it say where station 3 is.
I believe he also was in trouble for disturbing the peace I think on a Sunday still trying to locate what I did with that peice of information.
I wonder if the information root gather has is finally Alexanders family did Scotland have census the same as England?

I don't see the parents after 1861 but as you have an approximate year for their births you should be able to find their deaths on Scotlandspeople - assuming that they remained in Scotland. The death certificates will give their parents names if the informant knew the details.

Just reading back through your posts. Y ou may have some of this info. There are several newspaper articles there.

Also what was it you needed from the Scottish look up. Has that been found.

Ooohoo Amanda, Do you have this little lot??

I know you said there was something about being the licencee of the Mt Vincent pub but I think this lot has him on a disorderly conduct charge in his hotel. Might be worth a read and might explain why he disappeared.

And something about damages to sheep!

Sorry I'm laughing. There is more as well, scroll down the newspaper items. I'm off to read all the goss!!

I hope the correct page stays in view because it was really hard to find. Just tested it and it opens fine.

Now we don't know which Alexander pratt this is. It is in the correct area and....

Alexander Pratt, charged with wife-desertion, was ordered to
pay 12s 6d per week for 12 months to the officer in
charge of No 3 Station.

Could very well be a mistake. Passenger lists are notoriously difficult to sort out . They just don't give enough information.

Also have you searced this site.

http://austcemindex.com/inscriptions.php

It gives all the Pratt family burials/inscriptions in NSW cemeteries.

Have you tried googling Liquor Licencing Laws 1880s or whatever. There would have to be some legal gobblygook people had to go through in order to have a licence to sell liquor.

There is also a very good NSW government site.

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/search?SearchableText=liquor+licensing

Whoo hoo try that little lot for a while. If you haven't already. You could also back track from that area and go through the general government site and see what is there.

Hi Yes I know that person who owns that tree her ex is my partner now and she is as baffled as me as to try and find out any details about Alexander.(where on very good terms)
Not sure what information was needed in the 1880's to make you eligible to have a liquor license whether or not if there is information available if it would indicate his age and where he was and what he was doing when he came to Australia.
What are your thoughts on that?
