Hi, I didn't mention anything about you having information in front of you. This was a comment by another poster when I looked for the marriage you mentioned and put the details on. I was happy to do this as it helps all to know which family they are looking for.

It was me that mentioned you having the details in front of you and it wasn't meant to be offensive in any way. When we are trying to help every wee bit for information helps. It is also good to know the sources of that information i.e. if it has come down the family word of mouth as sometimes the facts can get a wee distorted in the telling.
Statutory registration began in Scotland in 1855. If you look on Scotlands People, I am sure that it tells you what information may be available on certificates. Alas death certificates aren't quite as good as Australian ones as, with the exception of 1855, they don't list the children.
Census records are very useful as they can give you an idea of the approximate year of birth that you are looking for on Scotlandspeople - useful if you are seeking a fairly common surname. Scotlands People also has the Old Parish Records (OPRs). These are mostly Church of Scotland records - the usual way of recording births and marriages prior to 1855. The churches often recorded burials too but these often don't give much information regarding relatives of the deceased.
When you are using SP remember that you can use wildcards e.g. if you enter Jan* it will cover Janet and Jannet. The site is reasonably cheap to use as it is only £6 for 30 credits -1 credit to view the search result and 5 to view / download the entry. So if you're lucky and get the correct person first time you can actually see 6 entries for £6.
As you get more information, if you need census lookups, just come back to this thread and some of us will look them up for you - then you use your money on Scotlandspeople!
Good luck with your research and kindest Regards

I still sit infront of the computer and will, I promise, take the bull by the horns and try and use S P site. First time is always the worst they say. The IGI has two sorts of records - member submitted (which are of variable accuracy) and extracted records which have a batch # and usually a matching image at SP (if they're Scottish). http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
If you're not familiar with batch #s, they disable many of the silly restrictions in the search screen, and restrict the search to a particular parish register, spanning a specific time frame (or a parish of the GROS index 1855-1875ish). C of S batch #s have the form c11xxxN or m11xxxN where xxx is the parish # and N=1/3 for GROS index (except in a few big cities where N doesn't give enough #s) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm
Look up:
Results for: John Lennox, British Isles Spouse: Elizabeth Downie Exact Spelling: Off Batch Number: m113645
Results for: British Isles Father: John Lennox, Mother: Elizabeth Downie Exact Spelling: Off Batch Number: c113644
Results for: British Isles Father: John Lennox, Mother: Elizabeth Downie Exact Spelling: Off Batch Number: c113624
Kilmadock, Kincardine and Dunblane are 3 mutually adjacent parishes in S Perthshire.

G'day mgvn, Thanks for your continuing explanations of all genealogy stumbling blocks for newies, I do appreciate it immensely, and have copied it to file and print, for quick reference when on line. Will do the look ups this week. I have a RAC Road Atlas for Britain, from our home visit in 1992, and use it all the time to quickly look up the towns mentioned and indeed find it facinating where they the rellies move to. Hooroo, Cate.
