You're welcome -- poked around a bit more but nothing more to report, so bring the birth cert info on back to the thread when it comes!

An Update!!

Just had a long read of the military records - the pensions one and it gave George's place and date of birth :o)

14 April 1892
Nottingham
He was a stoker when he listed so it looks like Basford George is my man!
Will def be orderingthe certificate
Again thank you both so much

Heh, I'd seen that too, looking at the images -- for some reason I thought choccy had already added it. ;)

I'm not quite going to place my bet on his mother being Annie Merrick/Judd -- we shall see!

Have received Basford George's birth cert!
The DOB on the military records are 14/04/1892 but on the birth cert it is 13/04/1893.
Father Charles Henry Merrick and mother Kate Merrick. (nee O'Neill)
Born in Carlton Notts
Not sure why the father on the marriage cert was shown as a mechanic as according to the birth cert he was a brickies labourer.
Have found them on the 1901 and 1911 census returns although my George Henry is hiding on the 1911 return.
Going to rummage around the 1881/1871 census returns for Charles Henry although with Kate I may not be so lucky as she was born in Kilkenny
I am taking it that my George and Basford George are the one and same!
The DOB is a year and a day astray but then our ancestors did seem to be more than evasive on many things!

My grandfather was a year and *two* days out on his birthday all his life until he retired and had to get a birth cert. Thought he was born 1900, but it was 1901; thought it was the 19th, but it was the 17th.

So if he had died before he retired, his death certificate would have been just about exactly as wrong as it looks like your George's was. ;)

Being a year or two out on the year of birth is actually not terribly uncommon, when someone born back then died and the family wasn't certain, but the date is generally right or very close even if the year is wrong, as our two examples seem to show!

You've found them in 1901 but you haven't told us. ;)

Name: George Merrick
Age: 7

Where born: Carlton, Nottinghamshire, England
Civil parish: Leicester Formerly St Margaret

She was Mary Catherine maybe? I don't see a marriage.

Hi There
No I couldn't find a marriage either although I did find a charles henry merrick marriage in 1893 in leicestershire but no O'Neill spouse (Leicester 7a 298 Jul/Aug/Sep)
Only found the 1901 census after getting the birth cert (trying to do bits whilst looking after my lil 2 year old mini monster)
I am wondering if Charles Henry did marry Mary/Kate whether they have married in Ireland as this is where she is from but then they could have married earlier as according to the 1911 census they had had 11 children of which only 4 were surviving, the 1911 cenesus also told me they had beed wed for 24 years.
ALL very interesting :o)

JaneyCanuck Report 22 Feb 2010 19:28

1911?

MERRICK CHARLES HENRY 1859 52 Leicester Leicestershire
HOUSEHOLD MERRICK KATE 1869 42
MERRICK ROSE HANNAH 1896 15
MERRICK THOMAS CHARLES 1901 10
MERRICK MARY CATHERINE 1908 3

Since 1901, he had aged 13 years and she had aged 14 years. Hm.

At 42 she was just barely old enough to have been married 24 years! which would be 1887ish. At 28 in 1901, she wasn't. ;)

Ooohhh now that is an interesting one! Not surprising my dear Old George altered the details on who his dad was on his marriage certificate ;o)

Will have to pull the 1881 census up to look! Hadn't noticed the differences in ages between the 1901 and 1911 census returns..... will have to have another look....
Interesting tho that in 1901 his wife is Mary C but in 1911 she is Kate but there is a child called Mary Catherine? Something fishy going on??
NB Kate is my dear George's mother (as per birth cert)

Some head scratching is approaching and some research on the prison too

Thank you again :o)

Definitely something to think on and aside from tracking down charles henry 's birth it's a huge possibility.... all good

JaneyCanuck Report 22 Feb 2010 20:13

I was editing. ;) I'd say there's no doubt that's your man's father! And his birth, with the names reversed.

Still no marriage, though ...

Marina

Marina Report 22 Feb 2010 20:15

Marina Report 22 Feb 2010 20:18

What's the best place to search for the reasons Charles was a guest at her majesty's pleasure? Would that be looking att he National Archives or am I making life difficult for myself?

JaneyCanuck Report 22 Feb 2010 20:27

Is the 1871 census you found the one I added to my post above? ;)

I doubt you would find many details about prisoners anywhere.

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892

I don't see any record there but you might want to do a more diligent search. ;)
