Marriage was performed "by Licence" ....... which means Banns were not called.



She describes herself on this as a "spinster" ....... and ehr father was Prewett


so I think it is fairly clear that this is her first marriage.


Alfred probably made up a father's name .................. or combined the first name of someone he knew with his own surname. It was often done, partly because it looks better to the other family.


he then became honest again for his second marriage when he said father "Unknown"

Yes my grandmother's mother Mary s Prewett, put on her census she was married or widowed, and managed to have three children, and she never married.

In 1851, Sophia Evans gives her birthplace as Wiltshire...............

It's a 'submitted' record - so needs to be verified if possible

People fibbed all the time about 'fathers' for the sake of propriety........

It may, indeed, be that she was married before, but, as I said, the cert will verify...........it will include her father's name

Now I'm confused. Because on Alfred's first marriage cert, he;s father is also Alfred.
So she must have remarried. Your probably better at this then me.

I don't think that his mother married 'again' - i rather think she simply married.

But the marriage cert will prove it - either way

Note that she called herself Evans long before the marriage!

Sophia Annie Prewett who is the nurse, living with Alfred Prewett, was also a witness to William Henry Prewett and Fanny Prewett's marriage.
