Hi Mary

Lol yes, one awkward family as you say! You've been working on it for hours - I've kept returning to them over the last 3 years!

Lobley and Seth (my other half's great grandad) were imprisoned for what we would now call receiving stolen goods, and Edward (their brother - and a Conservative councillor) got three weeks for thumping someone who said his speech making abilities were rubbish!!

I took a tip from another board and joined Lancashire Libraries, through which I have been able to access all kinds of adverts, obituaries, articles about the three of them - but nothing about any of Edward's offspring.

Ah well. Thanks for trying anyway!! Think I'll head for bed and try again tomorrow ...

Mary Report 4 Feb 2010 21:17

Been looking for hours with no new info except it seems Seth Oddy was imprisoned in March 1866 for 18months for false pretences with him also was William Lobley Oddy for same offence.

Maryb

This one awkward family for finding info.

Maybe contact with the person who altered 1871 census for Albert Edward Oddy with Clara and Maud boarders at school, there name was Oddy but I couldn't find a tree on Ancestry but they must have some connection to this family.

Well thank you for all your help anyway! And don't hesitate to pm me about 1911.

I would like to think we have begun to solve the question about Catherine -even if yet more questions have been raised by you finding someone who looks very much like her!

Now ... perhaps someone else has some great suggestions about Charles/Albert/Edward ... ??

Sorry to hear about your power cut. Its quite calm in south-east Kent (at the moment).

Not sure where to go next with this, Just cannot fathom who Reginald and Cecil are and how they are related, if at all, to Frederick and Catherine, and whether Charles Oddy on the 1891 census is in fact Cecil!

Have had a quick look for Charles Albert Edward, but not seeing anything.

Thanks for the 1911 census offer.

Sorry about the absence without warning - we just had a powercut. Blowing an absolute gale here in South-West France so assume some cable was down somewhere!

Anyway, had a look at the one you suggest - he is born Moston, Lancashire. Darn.

BTW, I have (as you can prob see) a 1911 census sub ... let me know if you need anything ;)

What about looking at this one on the 1911 census ?

HOUSEHOLD TOMLINSON CHARLES ED M 1882 29 Prestwich Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD TOMLINSON ESTHER F 1880 31 Prestwich Lancashire

No credits to view, but don't think it is him, as when I put in place of birth as Yorkshire, it is coming up with no result.

This is the marriage -

Marriages Dec 1909 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*******MITCHELL Esther Prestwich 8d 556
*******TOMLINSON Charles Edward Prestwich 8d 556
TURNER John Prestwich 8d 556
WELCH Mary Prestwich 8d 556

Not clutching at straws now, just grabbing.

A good find again Choccy. What a can of worms this seems to have opened!!

Choccy

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 15:51

what about this birth for 'Cecil' - named Oddy on 1891 census with Frederick and Catherine Myers ?

Births Dec 1885 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomlinson Charles Edward C Holbeck 9b 333

The initials match (if nothing else) !

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 15:34

Sadly it just says "Leeds, Yorkshire". Have tried all kinds of combos to find his brother (or whoever Cecil is!) in the 1911, but as yet, nothing.

And this is BEFORE you begin looking at Charles/Arthur/Edward ...

Choccy

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 15:21

On the 1911 census, does it actually say where Reginald was born? If we can find a birth, it may help.

I'm not seeing one or anything like at the moment.

Choccy

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 15:19

Can't see Cecil in 1891.

My thoughts are Reginald and Cecil are brothers, and possibly Charles Oddy was Catherine's illegitimate son.

I should have stuck to looking for one of the other Oddy siblings!

Aveyronnaise

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 15:03

I am really clutching at straws here - Cecil is the same age as Charles E C Oddy - could there have been some mistranscribing? Doesn't explain the sudden appearance of the "T" in 1901 though.

Aveyronnaise

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 14:59

On the 1891 census the only Reginald F Tomlinson born in Leeds in abt 1883 is a boarder in Whittington, Derbyshire. At present, I'm not seeing his brother anywhere!

EDIT Sorry, our posts crossed there. Perhaps in this instance "stepson" means "adopted"?

Choccy

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 14:58

totally confused as well !!

think this is 'Reggie' in 1891 -

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 14:50

This gets better - by time of 1911 census Reginald is "Reginald Frederick Tomlinson, stepson" ... so in 1901 "T" stood for Tomlinson ... but at what point was Catherine a Tomlinson if she married Frederick as Oddy??

They state they have had NO children born alive to this marriage.

On the plus side, her age (given as 49) means that if this IS my Catherine, she is finally telling the truth about her birthdate!

Aveyronnaise

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 14:35

I was just looking at the 1901 census with the same confusion, Choccy! I think your assumption must be right, that they are Frederick's children ... think I'll just look for them in 1891 and see where they were!

EDIT I can't find them!! Aagh ... the plot thickens ...

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 14:32

Think you'd have to get the certificate to find out whether Edward was deceased, and there again it might or might not say!

Aveyronnaise

Aveyronnaise Report 4 Feb 2010 14:29

Choccy, would the England & Wales Marriage Index show whether or not the bride's father was deceased?

Choccy

Choccy Report 4 Feb 2010 14:24

Don't know where these two sons came from !

Perhaps they are sons of Frederick and not Catherine. No sign of Charles Oddy.
