Hello again, i have recieved the Marriage cert of Violet Peachey and Sydney Grant....23/10/1948 Southampton. Sydney Patrick Grant. age 35. Condition; Formerly the husband of Dorothy Eugenie Grant, formerly *** , Spinster from whom he obtained a divorce. (Grrr, cant make out the maiden name. It looks like LAO.. have typed in Lao, Loo, Las, Ras ...etc!) Profession; Omnibus Driver (Corperation.) Residence; 83 St Andrews Road, Southampton. Father .. Sydney Joseph Grant (Deceased) Merchant Seaman. Witnesses ... W Larbalestier, who is Sydney Ps stepfather and a K Grant.
I cant find a marriage for Sydney P before 1948. I have found a 1891 and 1901 Census for a Sydney Grant 1885 England. The location at the time on both is St Helier, Jersey. As Sydney P Grant was born there, its possible it could be Sydney Joseph Grant. As Yet, i cant find anything to prove the fact!!

Just had a flash back regarding the witness.. K Grant on the Marr cert. I believe Sydney P Grant also had a sister Kitty!

There is a baptism for a Sydney Joseph Grant on the Jersey Heritage website.
Born 10/6/1884, baptised 8/5/1887.
His brother Percy John, born 16/3/1887 was baptised on the same day.

Parents Henry (coachman) and Ann Bennett Peek.

This is the family that you have found on the 1891 and 1901 - I think there's a strong chance that this is your Sydney Patrick's father and grandparents.

I'll have a root around in the parish records next week and see if I can find a birth for Sydney P. I can then go and look at the certificate - no charge for looking over here - and get back to you

Lily, please can i just point out to you that it is believed that Sydney Patrick Grants birth Certificate named him as Sydney Patrick Mythen. His mothers maiden name or perhaps an earlier marriage!

It was my post that was deleted - I did it accidently when I went to add something.
I had made a note to look under both surnames.

Glad it looks like you might be getting somewhere

I've had a look at the St Helier birth index and a Sydney Patrick Mythen Grant was registered between 1912 and 1914. The entry is on Page 45 so the birth was roughly in the middle of that period. So definitely registered with the surname Grant.

If you need any extra info I can go and look at the certificate next week.

Thankyou so much jerseylily, how very kind. Well its certainly my Sidney! I am tripping over my tongue because i need to send you on anouther mission to confirm that Sydney Ps father is Sydney Joseph Grant as mentioned earlier on this thread ....should i send you the bus fare?

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 27 Jan 2010 20:21

I am so positive that we are on the right track, as one of Sydney Joseph Grants Grandchildren was christened, Patrick Sydney and anouther had the middle name, Joseph!

jerseylily Report 27 Jan 2010 21:35

Very kind of you to offer bus fare but I think I'll be OK - the Registry Office is only about a 10 min drive away and the Archive 5 mins :-)

It'll probably be Mon before I can get there. I did have a look for a marriage between Sydney P and a Dorothy but no luck I'm afraid.

If Sydney J is the father, and I'm 99% convinced he is, take a look at www.jerseyheritage.jeron.je and you'll find his baptism. It's a bit tortuous and very slow but if you click Archive and then Name you get to the search page. Surname first then comma then space followed by Christian name will get you quite a lot of Grants. Clicking Sydney's name shows that he is in a St Helier baptism register but you need to click 'order items' and then 'transcription'. I suggest you then go and make a cup of tea while it loads the page! If you ask it to 'Find' before it's loaded it just comes back as no results. You may find others there who are connected.

I'm at the Archive most weeks so if you find anything you want looking at just give me a shout.

Hi again Lily, my other Jersey interest is the family of William Larbalestier c1889 St Helier. He is the elder brother of Peter Edwin Larbalestier 1912-1946 assistant keeper at Corbiere Lighthouse, who on the 28th May 1946 gave up his life attempting to rescue a visitor, cut off by the incoming tide. "Take heed, all ye that pass by!" I am sure you will know the story! William married Sydney Patrick Grants mother, Mary Grant/Mythen in 1931. I am expecting thier marriage certificate to arrive tomorrow but if you have any other info regarding the family, i would be very interested.... thankyou... Sue.

jerseylily

jerseylily Report 29 Jan 2010 11:45

Hi Susan
When you get the certificate I'd be interested in knowing his father's name as the only William Larbalestier I can find in the 1901 was born in 1895 and his mother was 44 meaning she'd be in her mid-fifties by the time she had Peter. Not impossible I know.

PricklyHolly Report 29 Jan 2010 19:12

Oh, i am so sorry Lily i think i just assumed William was Peter's brother but i see now that there is a 23yr age gap! He was probably an Uncle. He told the story that when Peter drowned, his father was told by the local authorities that it was most unlikely that his body would ever be found. He spent many days studying the current's and tide's, set off one day, found him and bought him home! I am really sorry to have wasted your valuble time. I expected the marriage cert to arrive on Wednesday, but i have still not recieved it. Will get back to you when i do if only to update you. Thankyou for your time ... Sue x
