The family Clover found you in 1901 Michael & Catherine, most of the children born in Liverpool. Catherine maiden name McCrink, Michaels father a John. Michael could be a cousin to your Michael.

The Griffith valuation have 5 Farrell's in Carrickboard, Thomas, Patrick, Anne, Peter & John.

Janey's post raised a point on content of Irish BMDs.

Their content thru 1921 was the same as English BMDs

One can see examples (Churchill, Conan Doyle, Nightingale) of English BMDs pre-1969 via
http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_186584.pdf

Also, there's a list of the registers the GRO holds, and the holdings of the local crown dependencies.

Thanks once again mgnv , there will be a need to trace a few BMD's from Ireland now as at least two of my ancestors appeared to have returned to Ireland .

I have made great inroads into my family tree since my last post , and I would once again thank you all for your help . But alas I am still unable to trace what happened to my Grandfather John Farrell (b 1890 Bootle Lancs) and my Grandmother Emma Farrell nee Wylie (b 1896 Bootle Lancs) .
We know they split up after my fathers (John Farrell ) birth june 1915 in Bootle , but I can find no trace of her re-marriage under Farrell or Wylie .
Family legend has it that in the late 1950's my Father was informed of Emma's death and went to the funeral and while there was introduced to another son who had apparently come from Australia to be there . We don't know if Emma had travelled there or he had . I have tried the travel documents I have access to but can find no trace of Emma going abroad .Can anyone offer a lead as to where to look ?

Hello Peter - it's quite possible that Emma took up with another man and used his name without the benefit of marriage, perfectly legal to do so.

What was her exact date of birth - sometimes useful in locating a death record using first name and birthdate (depends when they died, though).

Sorry I only have the info off free BMD qt june 1896 as we have been concentrating certificates on the Farrell side of the family

Peter...Have you tried to find Emma's obituary in the news papers.. ?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Sep 2012 09:01

Can't see any emigration/immigration records for Emma.

If your dad went to her funeral then wouldn't it most likely be in this country? Quite likely it was just her son emigrated.

Peter

Peter Report 4 Sep 2012 21:06

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP .
I am sure the funeral of Emma was locally ( within 50 mls ) and having searched many immigration docs I am almost certain she didn't go abroad as either Wylie or Farrell but the idea that she just took someone elses surname and lived as married honestly never occured to me . But anyone who just walks away from her newborn child is possibly capable of that and would save on divorce . John Farrell snr was in the merchant navy and away a great deal so perhaps lonliness got the better of her .

HI ALL , I am still searching for any info on my Grandfather John Farrell from Bootle Liverpool . I thought I had at least found a death cert , but date of birth is 2 days out ( do errors occur on documents like this in 1970 ? )
I have found his last known address which is Flint Street Bootle in 1926 where he was living with his married sister ( Bridget Wolfe ) we know this because he had his merchant seaman war medals delivered there ..( and confirmed by electoral role .)
Going back to the death cert I tracked down , is there anyone out there know of a John Farrell who lived at 14 Eden Vale Bootle in 1970 so that I can eliminate him from my enquiries

Eringobragh1916 Report 26 Feb 2013 08:17

Peter...Good to hear from you again...

The date of Birth on any document especially when supplied by someone else eg Death Reg.is only as valid as the info given by a third party even if it's a family member...Who Reg. the Death...?

Peter

Peter Report 27 Feb 2013 16:44

Hi , glad to be back , tried Ancestry for a while . Hope that isn't swearing on here .
The informant is someone I have never heard of , nor does it give any connection or relationship to the deceased . So not sure if I have the wrong John Farrell or it is a mistake on the certificate . The problem is further enhanced by the fact that the certificate also states " causing the body to be cremated " so can't even trace a grave to see if we recognise anyone else buried in the same plot .
On free BMD there is a possibility of another John Farrell being born the same qt as my ancestor , I might just get that birth certificate and check the birth date .
In the meantime , I will carry on the search .

Just an update on Emma Farrell / Wylie . My sister believes she remembers my Father going to his Mother Emma's funeral approx 1957 / 58 and it must have been in Lancashire because he couldn't drive ( or indeed afford to own a car )
If as previously suggested Emma had taken some other mans name , what name would she have had her death registered as ? Would she have had to legally be registered as her last married name ?
