Terence William Ryan was born in Bristol Somerset in the 1934

His parents were

Joseph Christopher Ryan 1893 to 1952 born in Limerick died in Bristol England
Mother Mary Ann Catherine Halls born 1893 to 1972 lived in Bristol

Bernard Joseph Ryan 1930 to 1996
married Catherine Joan Withers 1930 to 1992

Patrick Nicholas Ryan 1931
maried Elizabeth A Goldsworthy

Michael Edward Ryan
married Christine Anne Barlett

James Ryan 1929
married Sheila O'Keefe born 1932.

We know that Terence did his National service and was an ABC broadcaster.
We also know that he went to live in Melbourne Australia although we do not know when or if he returned to the UK

We also know that he was the CO of American Express whilst living in Melbourne.

Michael his brother has been trying to find him for some considerable length of time and has asked me if I can help. PLEASE if anyone has any knowledge of Terence would they either put their reply on here or send a message directly to me

Hi,

Just a thought - I am not sure what CO stands for (you say he was CO of American Express when in Melbourne), but it is obviously a 'high-up' position?

Would it be worthwhile sending an e-mail to the American Express Head Office there, explaining that you are trying to get in touch with this person and why?

They would obviously not be able to give out his details but if they have any records of him (maybe he is drawing a pension from them, or they still have his file??), they may be wiling to pass on a message to him giving details of how he could contact you.

Could that D J Ryan possibly be a 'B' J Ryan, only Terence seems to have had an older brother named Bernard J , born Dec. Q 1930 ?

Thank you for your responses, I have had to be away from my desk as our visitors from UK arrived an hour osr so ago. I shall be seeing his brother today and shall pass the info on..I will get back to tell everyone the outcome but not until tomorrow.

Anyway, the advice is the same, I am sure there will be reference to him in files + records at American Express, maybe someone may even remember him.

I am back asking another favour, do hope you do not mind. I have tried to see if Terence William came back to UK as family believe he did...I have tried looking and cannot find any eveidence to support this nor am I sure how to get onto Australian records. Can anyone do this look up for me please. I shall be meeting his brother this evening, I am 1 hr ahead of UK

I had looked for any records of him coming back in but there was nothing.

To be honest though, in the time period you are looking at and given his status within such a large International Company, it is unlikely that he would come in by ship - I think he would almost certainly have 'flown' across??

I don't think there is any way to trace incoming passengers travelling by air?

P.S. - 'Mentions' in newspapers are quite likely but we would have to find out an approximate date for when he was CEO.

To everyone who has helped me so far Thank You.

I was due to meet Mike, the brother of Terence yesterday but that will now take place today. I will see if he has found anymore details. I have googled and searched until my eyes ache for any adress of an American Express office in Melbourne and all I find is shops who take American express etc...maybe I am just not seeing the info.....having to wear varifocals does not help with the small print!!
So if anyonbe can find and address it would be wonderful.

I was also wondering if there is a seperate GR for Australia or are they all linked to each other?

Someone must know if he returned to the UK and I agree that he probably flew to his next destination. I wonder if he married in Australia...is there anyone who can look this up for me or who can tell me how to do this...

An update on the progress of the search for missing Terence Ryan


I have received a message on GR fronm the grand daughter of a brother of Terence Ryan Christopher Ryan, the father of Terence. We ar very excited and I will let you all know the outcome. So if anyone can help just a little more it would be wonderful...
Can anyonehelp me to find the siblings or relations of Joseph Christopher Rayn born in Limerick Ireland 1893, and who married Mary Ann Catherine Halls,
I hope to put this tree on GR sometime today and tomorrow.

How exciting to find a living relative so quickly, I hope she can help you further.

With regard to how I found the American Express info, - I just googled something like "American Express" + Melbourne + "Head Office" and looked through a few of the sites it gave me.

Anyway on to your 'Joseph Christopher' - do you have any other info for him? Where did you get the name from, was it on his son''s marriage cert?

I looked on 1911 census but he does not appear to be on it so pprobably still in Ireland.

I also looked on 1911 Irish Census and, believe it or not, there are not too many Joseph Ryans in Limerick - However, no Joseph Christophers so we will need more info to be sure.

You can check through the Irish Census for yourself - It is actually FREE !!! - unlike ours!

Thanks for your sustained interst in this tree !!! I wish mine had developed so fast.

I am truly amazed with the speed that I have had so much info. Yesterday the lady who contacted me sent by attachment a hand written tree which had been scribed by her great uncle who is the brother of my friends great grandfather......I am stiil suffering from the amazing speed.

Now I can certainly moved forward.


Right nowq I am not sure where the Christopher part of the name came from I think it was possibly on a search engine but quite ahappy to remove this if it causes problems. I will look at the tree again and check and if I am wrong I will let you know.

Sometime today I will go on the 1911 census, I have been on it once before because my father was born in Dublin in 1912 and I was trying to find his info...Sadly he never new his parents as he was fostered and did not learn of his true parents, or al least we think they were his true parenst until he lwas in his late 20s early 30s....the only person who knew refused to tell us even a few days before she died. she said she had made a promise and would not break it...it broke my father though" ah well another time another place, maybe he was here for a special reason.
