no one is trying to "get at you", we are all trying to help you, as is demonstrated by the amount of information you have on this thread and the amount you had yesterday

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Sep 2009 00:33

Your name appears as "fledgling" at the beginning of the thread. Halfway through, it changes to "[name]". Then it changes back to "fledgling".

You are absolute correct that this site entirely improperly (and, I think, illegally, and contrary to the assurance it gives in its privacy policy) discloses real names via the username link. I am not Janey Canuck, and that is not Ann of Green Gables you are talking to. I recommend to everyone I think of that they alter their registration details to remove all reference to their real name for this purpose (and also remove themselves entirely from their trees, or do as I do and call themselves "abc xyz" or such, so they don't show up on tree searches -- which do disclose living relations, even if they are not visible on trees).

(Just so you know, name changes are a bugaboo hereabouts. There are people who mess with their names constantly and it does no one any good. I made a public change from the name I was known by - when the board assigned me my own name - to this one. You've just started, so you will be cool.)

Oh lordy ...I started the thread yesterday as ..then today I've given myself a community name . I edited the first post this evening ... where it 'says started the post yesterday but got stuck' so my name comes up as fledgling because i edited it this evening (following the advice that someone had put on another thread) as the rest of the post and replys were yesterday my name comes up as ...
I just gave myself a community name thats all ... sorry its caused this

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Sep 2009 00:43

Ah, then another tip - I do this when an old thread I've posted in resurfaces.

Go to the posts that still have your name-name on them (I'm going to delete your name-name from my posts because I do take privacy very seriously), click edit, then click submit. The username on them will change to your current username, and all the confusion will be gone!

fledgling Report 10 Sep 2009 01:03

I've done that thanks .. some replied to my name and I can't edit those but changed all i can .

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Sep 2009 01:15

Whoops, I got the impression you'd done the whole job, but you haven't, and I imagine you will want to.

Click on your username. Look what you see. I think you will want to change it. Note what you see when you click on my username.

Go to "My account" in the upper right above this thread. You'll have to give your password again. Delete your given name and put fledgling. Delete your birth surname, if it's there. Delete your surname. Substitute something for your surname: an x or a dot will do.

That almost finishes the job of correcting the egregious privacy violations this site commits. You still need to remove your name from your tree and substitute something else for it (I don't recommend using your username, as searching trees for that would then disclose your birth details). Otherwise, when you send or receive a private message, there's a 50% chance your name will show up as the "relation" of whoever you correspond with, in their contacts list.

Meanwhile, does your family name happen to come from Devon/Cornwall? ;) It was my grx2 grfather's and his brother's middle name and I suspect his mother's surname, but spelled with an 'a' mostly/later.

Thankyou for that ! Phew All done now bar tree which I'll sort tomorrow . Yes traced them to Devon , Ideford so far . Apparently we used to have an 'a' or so i was told as a child but I havn't found it yet .

Thanks root gatherer ... just incase you get confused by name change too its still me but i just gave myself a 'community name' to protect privacey and felt i was given a hard time :( , as you know I'm new to this and didn't expect to be traeted so suspiciouslly. But thank you lots for looking for me as you can see from finding them both now in 1861 its 1851 where I need to find them . The one found I posted for 1851 has a William born in Towton Somerset... but dates a bit out too ! Confusing isn't it ?

rootgatherer Report 10 Sep 2009 13:18

No problem about name change as I had already posted, your thread stayed in the "My Threads" for me.

These boys are certainly seeming elusive in 1851! Iam wondering do you have William's marriage certificate or are we needing to find that to get his father's name and occupation? I am think that if the boys were perhaps orphaned at a young age then the place of birth may not be accurate.

Thank you both for replys
I need to find marriage certificate for William Hodges 1844 c and Mary Jane (?) 1848 c to get William and Henrys father don't I as we're prob not going to find it from cencus record . The marriage most likely must have been in Bristol as thats where he was living aged 17 and by 1871 cencus hes married to 'Mary Jane'
living St Philip and St jacob Bristol and they had a daughter Louisa .. who died young think I've found death record explaining why shes not on subsequent cencus record) and all other records we've found him on thereafter. My mum also thought one of her fathers grandparents was called 'Orchard' ... this Mary is the only one left who could be that Orchard maybe?

Rootgather ...On the previous marriage you'd kindly found with William Hodges and Mary J Mattick both say Bath which could be right for him but sure Marys would say Bristol

Given Philip's age on the 1891 census this is the only one that I can see on freebmd?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Dec 1873 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BREWIN Mary Jane Leicester 7a 430
Hodges William Leicester 7a 430

Perhaps a safer route to go down first is to buy the birth certificate for one of the children to get the mother's maiden surname.

Right! Looks like Philip was born in Bristol

Births Dec 1877 (>99%)

HODGES Philip William Bristol 6a 41

but I can't see a marriage coming up there!!!!!!!! for William and Mary J - Of course, we are assuming that they married!

Haven't found anything on Orchard yet either.

fledgling Report 11 Sep 2009 11:02

Hello
Well thought if going to order certificate on Williams children I should get Francis E ( Ernest) Hodges from 1891 cencus ( Philips and Christophers brother) as its Francis ( recorded on future cencus and known as Frank) that I'm related to ..... but I can't find him !! been looking on ancestry , He should be 1879 ish if Philips 1877 . Thankyou so much everyone for all the help so far - I'll get Philips if can't find Frank .
Best Wishes
Fledgling :)

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 11 Sep 2009 11:17

Couple of possibles for Frank - if his birth was registered in the same area as Lincoln's.

Births Dec 1878 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HODGES Francis Thomas Barton R. 6a 107

Births Mar 1880 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hodges Frank Ernest Barton R 6a 152

If you specify the father's name when ordering, I think they refund some of the fee if it is not the correct entry?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 11 Sep 2009 11:23

Don't think it is thesecond one - have just looked on ancestry and I think in 1901 he is the one living with mother Emma.

EDIT

Sorry definately the first one as he is Francis E Hodges on the 1891 census.
