Thanks all, I'm still here chewing over all the information you are producing. I'm not quite able to digest it all at once but it is really fascinating - and quite exciting too! Thank you awdrey I will look on the Wiltshire BMD index. I'm very interested Ann of Green Gables in the possiblility of the name change to Goodsheap - do you think that happened with this one? I wonder what that means. I had thought that Goodship was some sort of derivation for Good chap or God's Chap...but Goodsheap!

This intriguing and unusual name is of early medieval English origin, and is one of that large group of interesting modern surnames which were gradually developed from the habitual use of nicknames. In this instance, the nickname was one given to a trader who made frequent use of the vendor's cry "good cheap". The phrase derives from the Middle English "gode", good, from the Old English pre 7th Century "god", with "ch(e)ap", bargain, barter, from Old English "ceap". The medieval phrase "good cheap" was used when the market was good for the purchaser, that is when prices were low, and the nickname was for one who gave a good bargain and advertised his wares by calling out this phrase. The surname development includes William Gudchep (1236, London), and Hamo Godchape (1315, ibid.). The modern surname can be found as Goodchap, Goodcheap and Goodship. One William Goodship was christened at Wandsworth in South London on the January 9th 1681. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Walter Godchep, which was dated 1166, The Norfolk Pipe Rolls, during the reign of King Henry 11, "The Builder of Churches", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Goodship Line & variants Thank you Ann of Green Gables I never knew that - just goes to prove yet again that I'm not too old to learn! So in the earlier days the variant could have been used until it became the established name?

Goodship Line - new information!
This morning I received a surprise in the post in the form of a copy birth certificate which I ordered a month ago. It was the marriage certificate of my G Grandfather William Goodship and G Grandmother Clara Jane Millie. This was ordered and based on the birth certificate of my Grandfather William Robert Goodship bn Camberwell 1896. The lines being followed yesterday were fascinating and I've been going through them to establish confirmation, however, this new information will alter that line and perhaps help a little in determining the direction.
The Marriage Certificate info is as follows.... Column 205 28 August 1892 Marriage solemnized at The Parish Church in the Parish of Bethnal Green in London. William Goodship 43 Widower Butcher Resident at 261 Globe Road. Father - George Goodship (Deceased) Publican. & Clara Jane Millie 36 Spinster Resident 134 Old Ford Road. Father - William Millie (Deceased) Tailor. At first I wondered if, because he was a widower the line would still hold, but realise that his father's name is George and not Andrew.
Apologies to you for all the work on the previous line but it was very interesting anyway because I learned a lot. I would welcome any suggestions and ideas, please!
Regards
Russell

It's not surprising that the transcriber had problems. There's lots of scribbling over. If you know the names are Brewer & Goodship you can work them out.

Unfortunately I can't find him in 1891. I've tried William +/- 5 years1848 born Calne but nothing likely turns up.
By the way, I keep adding to individual posts as I find info. So good idea to check back on them. I'm trying to find the Vaughan connection now to see if William went to them in London, but no luck.
Ozi.
