Find Ancestors

Hi all

Wilkes Herbert married Sarah Coukham in Sept 1842 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. The name of his father on the marriage certificate is not readable. Her father is William Coukham (Cokeham - and other possible variations). They have a daughter Sarah Ann b 1848. I can find only one mention of Wilkes Herbert(s) in 1841 as an apprentice with an apparently unrelated family, and not born in county (Yorkshire)

In 1861, Sarah is "married" to William Turner, and child Sarah Ann Herbert is living with the couple.

I can find no death of Wilkes Herbert, no trace of either Wilkes or Sarah in 1851, and no birth for Wilkes, though IGI has one of Wilkes Herben, father John (which could possibly be what is on the marriage certificate), but he IS born in Yorkshire 1821.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Does the occupation of Wilkes found in 1841 match with the marriage certificate?

Yes you are all right. Sarah Coukham is Sarah Cocker (actually looks like Couker), on marriage to Wilkes Herbert. Got the marriage cert. It is a hotchpotch. Father William Cokeham, bride's signature Sarah Cokerhem, witness James Coukham, assumed her brother.

Yes Gwyn, he is an apprentice table blade forger, and then a table blade forger. Same man, I think. Age is a little low, I agree. Just no idea where he is in 1851 (or Sarah). He presumably dies before 1861 when Sarah is married to William Turner.

Ann, I think your Coukams are right, but not Sarah Ann Turner.

dob 1826 in 1841 means only that he was aged 15 to 19. He could have been almost 20.

Do you suppose there's any chance that he actually *is* William Turner, born c1823? Having changed his name for some reason, and taken a more obscure job? But if so, why keep the child's surname the same ...

Well I have two friends who used to share a London rooftop with Donovan!

And my old No.1 used to live in Texas with Ginny ... who was once married to Jay ... who was a bit of a lad and previously had liaisons with Jerry Hall and ... what the heck was her name, silly name ... Koo Stark.

So you see where this is going ... six degrees of separation from Mick and Andy!

Selina/Janey, the marriage is Cocker, Couker on the cert, I did say that.

I did mention William Turner.

Janey, he is still in Sheffield in 1881 and 1891, a widower, no family with him. Not a clue where William and Sarah are in 1871.

Still no death of Wilkes Herbert.

Well, it's probably unlikely that Wilkes died, at least before 1861. Sarah and William would have married. -- Unless William Turner was himself married, of course.

I'm not averse to a bit of chit-chat. I do remember Koo Stark. I am old enough to remember Donovan too, have actually met him, and a lot of other old stars, but I can't see why you think it necessary to make remarks about Joe Cocker not knowing who Wilkes Herbert is.

I am trying to research my family tree.

Maybe relatives of Joe Cocker will get a different reception.
