My GG Grandfather had the middle names of Warren Bryant and his twin sister Warren Edwina. Their father was Thomas John Vicary married to Ellen Jane Taylor on 23/06/1878 in Lambeth. Ellen was born 1859ish lambeth maybe? Ellens father was Edwin Taylor so i know where Edwina middle name came from, but who was Ellens mother was she a Warren which might explain Warren for a middle name for both siblings. Where can i look for a marriage for Edwin Taylor to a wife in Lambeth poss?
from a confused head

The only way to be absolutely sure that you have Ellen Jane's correct parentage is to buy her birth certificate.
Assuming she was registered as E#llen Jane (which is not always a given!!), these are two possible birth registrations for her.
A certificate will cost £7
Births Sep 1857 (96%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Taylor Ellen Jane Marylebone 1a 388
Births Mar 1860 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAYLOR Ellen Jane Clerkenwell 1b 560

Hi,
I'm very new to this and having trouble seeing the wood for the trees. Can someone please explain - or point me to where it's explained what lines like ...
Taylor Ellen Jane Shaftesbury 5a 230
... mean? The 5a and the 230?
And is Taylor the surname or Shaftesbury.
Thanks in advance for (hopefully!) your patience.

Barry
5a is the volume number and 230 is the page number
This refers to the record book held at the General Register Office ....... commonly referred to as GRO.
You need those numbers when you order a certificate from GRO

Although no one has said, what folk are doing is looking up the GRO index at: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
It's real easy when you know the answer, so lets look for Edwin Taylor marrying a Charlotte. We might play safer be checking phonetic sunames (in case it's down as Tailor) and also Charlot*, since this has variable spellings. We get 2 hits in Devon, one in Wolverhampton and one in Shaftesbury, where the census was:
Marriages Jun 1847 (>99%) Taylor Edwin Shaftesbury 8 173
If we click on "Shaftesbury", then the more info "here" link, it tells us all the villages, etc in Shaftesbury Registration District.
If we click on the page # "173", it shows us all the people with certificates on the same page as Edwin. This obviously includes his bride, but we don't necessarily know who this is. However, we're lucky this time, and there's only one Charlotte, so it'll be her
Marriages Jun 1847 (>99%) BRICKELL William Shaftesbury 8 173 Hatcher Elizabeth Shaftesbury 8 173 Huse James Shaftesbury 8 173 Peters Elizabeth Shaftesbury 8 173 >>Taylor Edwin Shaftesbury 8 173 >>WARREN Charlotte Shaftesbury 8 173
Armed with the info here (year, quarter, Rego D, vol=8 p=173) we can order the cert from the GRO for 7 GBP. Without that info, it costs 10 GBP, and that's assuming you got stuff pretty close.

There was a Sarah Coward down as nurse in the 1861 census for Edwin and Charlotte's household, and the name Frances Coward in 1818. Presumably not coincidence.
