I've just realised I didn't update this and, just in case anyone else needs the info for their tree:


John McFadyen is indeed the one Alviegal referred to as born 18 June 1872 in Middle-East-West Parishes, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland. However the IGI has his mother as Margaret Greenman and her name is actually Margaret CREELMAN.
The writing on the birth record was diabolical.

John McFadyen and Margaret Creelman married in Belfast on 15th January 1866 (however John's surname has been spelt 'McFadden').

Thank you to evreryone who helped me finally find out who John's parents were.

If he was born in scotland the birth certificate will give you the name of his parents even when and where they were married as well as where they are from. My nans does try that you can order it through scotlandspeople.gov.uk it costs £10

Well I tell you girl I am seeing these McFaydens in my sleep.....still havent figured out which one sof the Wallsend lot were friends of the family...

I wasnt the one who sent you Birth Record of John...someone else must take the credit...!!!
I have been looking through the Greenock Census and there are no Greenman's however there are plenty of Greenan's...all in the Abbey area and from Ireland (First generation)...
If you want to send the Birth Record through to my email address I will have a look at it for you....

Thanks for that - I had come up with that on the IGI too - I'm just not sure though but hopefully I'll get the Birth Certificate this week to prove it. Erin sent me his birth record but the maiden surname of Margaret can't be made out. I've been trying to see if it reads 'Greenman' but it doesn't seem to look like that although it could just be bad handwriting.

I'll let you know when I get the BC!

Tootsie...The only reason I was curious is because my mother and g.mother were friends of the McFadyens and as children they always referred to the "grown ups" as Mr./Mrs...my sisters and I have racked our brains to try and remember the "christian"name of my mothers friend.."Mrs McFadyen" with no success..but Lizzie kept coming to mind...Small world isnt it...??

I'm not aware she was known as Lizzie although she may have been. I have a sister called Elizabeth and she tends to be referred to as Liz, Lizzie, Lib, Libby, Libbyanna (her middle name is Anne) so I suppose anyone with a name like Eliza could be known as any of these kind of names.
I recently found out from my dad that she was actually known as Nina and also as Maisie (no idea why - seems totally illogocical to me).

Thank you for all the info on Wallsend streets and the relevant churches. I'll print it out so I know what I'm doing when I go there.

Carol - yes that would be a good idea if people can't get to locations but would like to see where their relatives lived. You could also try having a look at google maps first though just in case they are covered on there. I tried this the other day and it was quite good as my sister's road had been done and you could rotate the map so that you could get the view as if you were walking down the street too. I checked my house out and that wasn't on there though.

I actually quite fancy going back up north though and having a look and getting feel for the places where my relatives lived. I'm even going to do it for the other side of my family who only lived locally (between 7 and 25 miles away).

Tootsie....Richard Freeth's death 26th May 1905 aged 55yrs...was posted in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle Obituaries.

Cant help with the Sunderland side but Wallsends okay....All the streets still there. Laurel Frank and Hedley St.run adjacent to one and other..Rawden Road other side of the railway going down towards the river...still there.
St Lukes (CE) Church is on the corner of Staion Rd and Frank St.
Prospect Ave..still there nearest Church is St Bernadettes RC at top end of Station Rd.but if CE then St Lukes would probably be the Church they used..the Cemetery for Wallsend is Holy Cross...old burials took place at St Peters Church Bank......Imagine ealier McFadyen's'Small Frieth would be in there as they were still burying at St.Peters into the 60s but only if youy already had someone buried there..otherwise it was over the way at Holy Cross.....

I know I saw my grandparent's address in Prospect Avenue a few years back so I'm sure that will still be there but I don't know what church it would be. I think my brother was actually christened up there on one of our visits and I'm sure it was at St Luke's (although no idea where that would be). I'm assuming because my grandparents still lived at Prospect Avenue when they died that they will be buried at St Luke's too. My dad can't remember.

Oh I love you lot - you've been absolutely brilliant and I can't thank you enough for your help.

I don't know Wallsend very well - just had holidays there with my grandparents every year in the summer hols. I'm planning on going there for a visit this year though when I've collated lots of info and can see if the addresses people lived in still exist. Just want to get a feel for the place. I may do some graveyard visits too - how ghoulish. LOL

If there's anything I can ever do for any of you (I'm a bit of a novice but I'm getting there) please let me know.

Parents of Eliz.Freeth were Richard and Margaret Small ...have crossed ref.with Births Regs of the following
Maria born 20 April 1878
Sarah Ann born 15 dec 1880.
Baptised Willington Quay.

Tootsie. I found the McFadyen,s on the 1881 Census for Wallsend which you can access the Census on www.familysearch. org.

Eliz.Small was a widow at the time but had a brother-in-law John Small b.Ire. living down Kelly St.as a lodger.
Dont know how familiar you are with Wallsend but there was a large Scottish Irish Community living there.
The Reg.District for Wallsend is Tynemouth and for Walker it is Ncle.
The RC Church serving the community at the time was St.Aidens (Willington Quay) and later St.Columba's Wallsend. Walker was served by St Anthony's.Records for all are deposited at Ncle Archive's Blanford St.except for the Baptismal Records for St.Columbas which are still held at the Church.
