James was born 1883 in Carlisle,Cumbria(so we believe) to David Bowman. He wed an Ethel Diamond in 1915 and had 2 children Arthur Robert and Ethel. I am a child of Ethel. He wed again in 1929 and in 1938 he wed Dorothea Martin. He committed suicide in April 1938. Does anyone have any info on James or David prior to 1915. Thanks |

Hi Misty, Thanks for your help. I did not know how to use the threads but have just done so . This is my tree as I know it. I do however have David Bowman as a Stone Mason. Jane Deary as a Jane Kelly before marriage. Parringtons come in this way-------------John Edward Bowman aka James wed Ethel Diamond and had Robert Arthur b1916 and Ethel b 1919. Ethel wed WilliamHenry Parrington b1897. She was his second wife and my mother. I was born in 1939 and they wed in 1941 (Parringtons had a habit of putting the horse before the cart) I am Dorothy, Hilda b 1942, Marilyn b 1946 Robert b 1948 and Kenneth b 1963. I have located lots of data on the family but had a real problem locating John Edward Bowmans 2nd marriage to a lady called Dorothea Jacquilene???????? and also his subsequent death. It would be great to keep in touch and sort out this tangle. Hope that you have a super day, Dorothy |

Been mystified in looking for my grandparents and as I am 75 I wonder if I will ever know. The names James Bowman must be the most popular in the UK. I have the marriages of James. All his children's names, all the info on his suicide, also a photograph of his gravestone. Have no birth certificate to authenticate DOB or place of birth or how he came to meet Ethel Diamond. Was he in the 1914-1918 war was he a soldier, was he a marine man who knows. Certificates say that he was a marine engineer and others that he was an engine fitter. Who was this man, what was his occupation, where did he come from, who was his mother.I have no idea and would be grateful for any info what so ever. Thanks |

I see from above that you have David as being a stonemason. Is this from the 1915 marriage cert? Can you please give us the address for John from that cert? |

Hi James took his life. He lived in Reeds Lane Wallasey Cheshire. He lived at a house called "St.Elmo" and next door was a place called "The Three Musketeers Cafe" and this was the premises were he committed suicide. It is presumed that he died 10th April and was found on the 11th April. I have the coroners report the death certificate but I have no record of where he was born or of my forebears. Thanks for your ear.Dorothy |

I was hoping that perhaps the witnesses to the 1915 marriage might throw up a sibling to James but instead they look as if they might have been related to Ethel |

Hi, his father was cited on the 1915 certificate. I presume that he was deceased by 1938 when James wed Dorothea. I know that he was wed in 1929 also. Now I don't have this as fact (other than my mother said that her father wed in 1929 when she was 9 or 10 years old) I suspect that he wed an Annie Spong nee Sumner and that she died in 1935. However this later fact I am not sure of but the others I am. My mother always insisted that he came from up north. Dundee was mentioned also north border so this is the area conscentrated on. Also whenever I looked for James With David/stonemason I was always sent to Cumbria. |

Whether or not the father was deceased, his name would not change, and it should be on every marriage cert |
