DIANE LESLIE MacLEOD born cJune 1906-8 India?

No verification of this birth can be found whatsoever. Searches have been
made of Indian, Scottish and English births by many people but to no avail as yet.

Possibilities: This is not her real name.
DIANE: Searches have been made under: Donaldina, Dolinda, Dolina etc.

LESLIE: She was very attached to her middle name of Leslie and insisted it was spelt that way. She gave the name to one of her sons. Some searches have been made re this name. More may need to be done.

MacLEOD : On her marriage certificate (1929 in London), she states her
father to be Major Robert MacLeod of the 1st Seaforth Highlanders, Deceased. Nothing of him can be confirmed despite extensive military searches being made. These can be found on ps 2-4 and 14-15 – 29 and 36 of this thread.

Her family were told that she went to live on Stornoway with ‘Aunt Kate and
cousins Donald & Ishbel (Isabelle)’. This family has been researched as probably the family of Rev. Donald MacLeod who was the minister of the church in Tarbat. The present Incumbent of that church has been contacted and was most helpful. *

The family consisted of:
Donald Smith MacLeod 1854 -1930 in Roseneath, Dumbarton.
Kate Isles Wylie 1864 - 1935 (Widow) in Roseneath,
Jean Annabella 1888 - ?
Katherine Mary 1890 - ? Married Archibald K. MacLean.
Donald Stanley 1890 – Lieut. RN.
Murdo 1891 - Wounded at Gallipoli
Lizzie Isles 1893 – Married a McMurchie
Hector Ian 1895 – 1916 Killed in Action
Ishbel 1896 – 1976 in Inverness. Married a Grieve
Barabel 1898 – 1923 in Cornwall
Norman 1900 – Wounded in France 1918
Margaret 1900 - ????
Roderick Callum 1902 - ?

More needs to be done on Margaret and Roderick. Margaret was still at home on the 1911. Where did Donald jnr go? Various agencies in Tarbat have been contacted re this family and Diane but nothing found.

It was hoped we had a lead to Jean Annabella but…….? See this link for further info

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1273853

Barabel, who was a Seed Analyst, for the Board of Agriculture, died at the
age of 25 in Cornwall. FBG discovered a family by the name of Bolitho one of whom married a MacLeod from Ross-shire. See p. 44 of this thread for more details.

Diane stated that she went to school in Stornoway. The most likely school
would be the Nicolson Institute. A search has been made for her under D.L.M but there is no sign of her under that name. An enquiry at other local schools may be helpful, maybe looking for a child with the Minister’s address rather than a Diane L. M. **

There is no sign of her under DLM on the 1911 Scottish census see p.41

A member on here discovered that ‘Diane’ worked at Springfield Hospital in London from 1927-1928. see p.32. Where was she before that?

In 1929 she married, as Diane Leslie MacLeod, a Herbert R.J. Roy in London. Up until her marriage, she received a private allowance, source unknown. The address given on her marriage certificate is 53 Khartoum Road, Wandsworth, London. The Electoral Roll for 1929 shows the family living at that address were named Kirby. There is no sign of Diane anywhere in Khartoum Road . She may just have been boarding there for a short time prior to her marriage.

Evelyn was born in 1932 at 44 Dafforne Road, Wandsworth and, at least, Diane and her husband show up there on the Electoral Roll. The voters listed at 44 Dafforne Road in 1932 are:

Evelyn Gertrude Goddard-Fenwick Herbert Robert John Roy, Diane Leslie Roy, Kathleen McDowell. The voters listed at the same address in 1931, in case it is of relevance, are Frederick Robert Smithson, Alice Smithson, Edward Hubert Mearing, Doris Mearing, and Kathleen McDowell, and in 1933, Evelyn Gertrude Savile Goddard-Fenwick, Emily Goddard-Fenwick, and Kathleen McDowell. Was this a rental property?

Evelyn Goddard-Fenwick is whom our Evelyn is named after and was her
Godmother. See ps. 22-23 of this thread for more details. ***

Various living Goddard-Fenwick’s have been contacted but to no avail. You can pm me for details on that.

So this is where the search is up to so far and many members have taken Evelyn and her search to their hearts.

If anyone feels they would like to tackle any of the unresolved issues or
re-check anything that has already been done….please do so. It may be that something has been missed or new information is available. Any new info can be added on here.

* There is some uncertainty about this family and area.

** A renewed search at the Nicolson Institute is being undertaken next week when the school reopens.

*** I have sent for a copy of EFG's will to see if it throws any light on things. We need a veritable searchlight for this story! :-D

Just a thought.
Was there a boarding school in Stornoway where she stayed & just went to Aunt Kate at weekends/holidays in view of the fact that Tarbet & Stornoway are too far apart for her to have been a day pupil.

Beat you to it Wisechild!!! I mentioned that yesterday (see previous page). :-D :-D :-D

I am waiting for a contact on FB to make some enquiries for me re the MacLeods.

Every little helps.

Received this PM ...

Hi Viv I haven't paid membership on here for a while but just realised you were still in my contacts. I still follow Evelyn's thread and plug away at a few things. Anyway I have come across a Gladys Sybil Enid Leslie born in 1900 and I can't find what happened to her, no marriage or death that I can find. She is on the 1901 census aged 10months with her mother Georgina A H Leslie maiden name Best and father Thomas Dowglasse Leslie who was in the Bengal Staff Corps in India, It says Gladys was born India but it wasn't the case she was born Eastbourne, Sussex. Thomas dies in India in 1904 and Gladys is with her mother on the 1911 census, It says Georgina is a widow married 7 years, living on private means and they just had one child. I know the dates are out but anything is possible with this one I think. Could you possibly rule her out as Diane. I'm not too good with English records and I know I'm clutching at the most random things.
Tracey.

Tracey sent a second one saying that she had found the death of Gladys in 1994 in Kensington so that rules her out.

I have added this PM as I thought it should be added to let people know that others to follow this thread and try to help..

Such kind peope we have on here...

and Donald Stanley

From Ancestry message boards

Anyone who may have known my step-grandfather, my aunt would appreciate information. She says, "My Dad's name was Donald Stanley McLeod. He died, we think, in 32. He would have been born in the late l890s, as he was only in his 30s. He died in Ramsey Co. Hosp. (Minnesota) He was a licensed chauffer a Shriner. He came from Scotland as a boy , first to Canada later
to the states." He was part of the family for only a short time, but his daughter and her family would like to find more of their family. If you can help, please reply. Thanks.

Such kind people indeed! Lovely, lovely, people all trying to help. <3

Thank you for that Quoy - I thought the name Lemmens rang a bell and it does! We came across that entry earlier and I found that Gerard Lemmens was a member on here. I sent him a message in September but it remains unopened. Another brickwall....sigh.

Anyway......

I have at least received the Will of Evelyn Goddard Fenwick. Nothing in it about Diane at all. Her effects are left to her siblings and a cousin.

It seems she was a violin teacher for many years at the City of London School for Girls. I am going to contact the school in the vain hope that they may have either some more info on EGF or a pupil by the name of DLM. One can but try.

Evelyn does know about this as I told her before I posted on here.

Sorry Evelyn......another disappointment for you. It's a pity you aren't related to the GF's.....quite an interesting family to research.

Next............................?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 19 Oct 2011 20:27

Hi Annie......his name was Marcus Stapleton-Martin of Norton Worcestershire. I googled him earlier and there are some items on there about him. Evelyn GF left him .....the picture of the Heiress of Rishworth (an ancestor of ours). As I said, it's a pity we aren't researching that family.....so much to go on!

Perhaps the descendants of the cousin might know something - we are desperate for information, after all! Did the information on the siblings give us anything that we didn't already know, like addresses etc?

Jooleh Report 19 Oct 2011 22:34

Shame about the will. I just remembered that I never found Evelyn's sister Christophine in 1911 so that might be worth pursuing if anyone else wants to try!
Her full name was Christophine Fanny Georgina Goddard or Goddard Fenwick born Leamington, Warwick 1869
(The other other sisters Louisa and Gwendolen were nuns in 1911)
