I understand Viv, I have always told my son and daughter how much I love them, something my mother NEVER said to me, I was always the odd one out, never felt that I belonged. Still I have survived and made a good life for myself in spite of all that.
I did used to feel envious of my friends that had a happy home life though.

HI Cynthia

I have a lot of female ancerstors who I think were "meant" to be boys as they have their fathers or grandfathers name adapted and I have always thought "what a shame" their is nothing like making it more obvious that the family did not want girls and I have to admit if I had been given a male name with "INA" simply stuck on the end I would have changed it.
There is a birth in 1906 so I am wondering if anybody has spare credits on SP to look at image unfortunately I only have one left and 5 is needed.

Fingers crossed somebody will do a look up who knows it may just be the right one.

Evelyn

I cannot think of anything more horrible than a mother teling her daughter that she wanted a son but it makes me wonder if this is because she was told the same then shipped off to some releative simply because she was a girl and never really go over it. I suppose you will never know the truth. But atleast you did not make the same mistakes and I bet that your children are happy in the knowledge that they have a mother that loves them dearly.

Hear hear Jackie. I am sure Evelyn has been a wonderful mum and is much appreciated.

The only boy/girl name I can think of with my lot is a Georgina which I think is v.pretty. Donaldina however? Not on your life.

I thought I was registered with SP but I must have expired or something (well my details I mean). It isn't acknowledging my password. What is special about the 1906 one you saw or is it just the date that grabs you?

I rather thought that they would all have to be looked at as well Cynthia,as we are not certain of her birth year.
Thats a few to be seen ,and I am a bit financially embarressed at the mo ,what with christmas and a surprise 50th party to pay for,for Him in Doors..

I now have a phone number for Goddard -Fenwick that is current, but I need to speak to someone else first to see if he is still alive, but they are out.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 20 Dec 2009 17:45

Not like you to be embarrassed Viv!!! lol

What do we do with a whole pile of Donaldina's then??

I'm going to be sorry I asked that!

Evelyn - I am so sorry to hear your mum said that - trouble is you always remember the worst bits.

I did something silly when i was around 12/13 & I always remember my mum saying I would turn out to be no good just like your rotten father. It was the first time she ever mentioned him in front of me & it always stuck in my memory.

Since doing my family tree I have found out a lot about him & he wasn't that nice a person in some ways - but I would never have said that to my daughter.

Some families are strange - but I do agree - perhaps it was said to her & because she was a girlshe was shipped off away from the family & she always resented it, she still shouldn't have said it herself though.

Jacqueline Report 20 Dec 2009 20:07

Hi all
I have Jamesina, Wiliamina in my trees. Shame they did not stick to the old fashioned naming patters.
I picked the birth in 1906 as this is the year that Evelyn was told her mum was born and she just might have been telling the truth, the birth cert would give fathers name and occupation aswell as mothers name and if they were married would state when and where. It may be a longshot but nothing ventured....
Regards
Jackie

Mr Goddard-Fenwick is away at the moment but the lady of the house is going to ask him to call me when he has time.

At least I wasnt told where to get off ,well it must be strange getting a phone call asking if they can help with any info on Evelyn Goddard- Fenwick and Dianes friendship.

I noticed that there is a GR member named Gavin who has both a Diane MacLeod and a Robert MacLeod on his tree, Diane having been born in Scotland around the right time and Robert in 1886 wondered if he has been contacted by Evelyn?

Gavin is the son of my youngest brother Robert, but thank you for that, you really are on the ball. All the knowledge that Gavin has got he got from me.
Diane remains a mystery

***Medal Card of MacLeod Robert Seaforth Highlanders Second Lieutenant General List Captain . Medal Card of MacLeod Robert Seaforth Highlanders Second Lieutenant General List Captain Date range: 1914 - 1920.**
The only seaforth one i can see on National Archives site, but you have to pay to download and there isn't usually much to find on them and it wouldn't give other names of family. It might give his army numbers

Evelyn Report 24 Dec 2009 10:47

Jan that sounds very interesting, I wonder what the initial L stands for (as Diane was Diane LESLIE Macleod), I wish I was clever like you, I just dont know how you search these things out.
Diane was born 1906 so this is a possibility isnt it?
I am getting quiet excited again now, I had begun to think this was a hopeless task but maybe just maybe who knows, thank you so much for your help.

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 24 Dec 2009 17:49

He seems to stick to his initials R L R Macleod. There are several medal cards of his on ancestry. Think he was a surgeon & poss just acting colonel during the war.

Evelyn, if you google Colonel R L R Macleod he crops up a fair amount. In the British Medical journal of 1895 he is said to have gone to India. There may be an obituary somewhere - sorry run out of time for further looking - I should be wrapping presents ha ha!
