I undertand waht Evelyn is after and I think the key is to find out about Robert and where he might have been.

I've searched the Army birth registers and can not find an entry for Diane.
I checked McLeod and MacLeod

There are births for Seaforth Highlanders the early 1900's are mostly in Cairo and around 1906/8 in Stormaway.

The regimenatal history site gives some indication of where the regiment was at various times.
http://www.cabarfeidh.com/SEAFORTH_HISTORY.htm

"The Regiment, now a single battalion, then served in Ceylon , India , Persia and again in India during the Mutiny, where it took part in the relief and capture of Lucknow winning eight Victoria Crosses in the campaign. It then returned home in 1859 and later served in Gibraltar , Canada and Nova Scotia before returning to India and taking part in the Afghan campaign of 1879-80.

Both Regiments were amalgamated in 1881 as the 1st and 2nd Battalions Seaforth .Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's). The 1st Battalion then fought in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 and later in the Nile Expedition of 1898, taking part in the battle of Omdurman . The 2nd Battalion went to India and later to South Africa in 1899, where it served in the Highland Brigade"

If my interprutation of this is correct the the India connection is too early and Diane was infact born Cairo, South Africa or back in Scotland.

I wonder too whether Diane's mother wasn't MacLeod and her father Leslie.

It's quite a common naming pattern, for the child of an unmarried mother to have the father's surname as a middle name. The spelling of Leslie does suggest that it's a surname.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/advanced_search.aspx

search for the words

robert macleod seaforth

and select "Medals, honours & awards" for subject to search.

There's one result for Macleod spelling:

Description
Medal card of MacLeod, Robert
Corps Regiment No Rank
Seaforth Highlanders Second Lieutenant
General List Captain
Date 1914-1920
Catalogue reference WO 372/13links to the Catalogue
Dept Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies
Series War Office: Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, First World War

£2 to view -- or it should be at Ancestry.

For McLeod spelling there are numerous.

There are also several for Robert Leslie.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 10 Mar 2009 12:08

My mother always insisted that her name was spelt MACLEOD, she said her father Robert was a Major in the Seaforth Highlanders, I dont even know if Diane had any siblings only know of cousins Donald and Ishbel.
My paternal Grandmother told me that until the time of her marriage my mother received a private allowance, why or from whom or where I have no idea, she also always said she was born in Delhi, the name Leslie has always puzzled me as it is spelt the boys way and knowing it to be a Scottish surname I wondered if it was her mothers maiden name, I have no idea what her mother was called, she never mentioned her,I really am confused

As he was a Major the Regimental museum might have some information on him. Otherwise, his officers records may be available at the National Archives -not online though - you'd have to go there or get someone to go for you.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 10 Mar 2009 22:17
