I really appreciate this. We have had no contact with any of my fathers side since I was 7 (36 years ago). So, at least i can let my dad know.

you can get the death certificate, it will give you a lot of information, also will tell you who registered it and their relation to him. also you could check the library close to there and see if they have back copies of newspapers for obituaries.

I think Grumpy has given excellent advice.
There are lots of possibilities from the info we have at present. The worst mistake you can make is to make an assumption.
As you get into the census periods we can cross reference census with other records but you need the marriage first.
When you get it post the results on this thread
and hopefully you should get even better results.

This is an incomplete transcription of the GRO index - very little after 1930 - and the reference given allows one to buy certs from the GRO for 7 GBP - without that info they cost more, and who knows what if anything you'll get, but even nothing would cost you.

"September quarter" ie July Aug Sept, so the event will have take place at anytime in that period

Victoria - technically, the register date refers to the date of registration, not to the date of the event. By law, a death was supposed to be rego'ed within 6 d after the death (or the body was found), and births within 6 w after the birth.
Before 1875, it was ultimately the registrar's job to find and record a birth, but after that it was the parents' responsibility. I think marrs were sent to the registrar by the ceremony's approved officiator. It wouldn't really be unusual to find someone born, say mar 17, to be rego'ed in April.
