If you could possibly post 1851 censuses please. I have lots of family in all of the areas including Birling, Plumstead and Croyden so I am interested. Christine

Christine,
You have been really busy!!
Thanks for the potted history regarding Penge. Gruesome!!
The 1881 info regarding Charles Stead is correct. Charles is the father of Elizabeth and Charles R W.
I am not sure about the Jemima Earl link though.
As requested, I will try to summarise where we are at this time..........watch this space.......

Sablon,
Louisa & Florence are step-sisters (same mother different fathers) and yes, your findings are correct.
You can find them together (the step-sisters} on 1911 census

In answer to your question re Penge 1877
The Penge Murder Mystery
Have you heard of Forbes Road in Penge? Probably not, as it was renamed Mosslea Road after the scandalous events known locally as the Penge Murder Mystery of 1877.
No one wanted to be associated and known to be living in the same road as the murder - and so a decision was made to rename it.
The murder mystery concerned the suffering of a poor, helpless woman and her baby who were locked away and starved to death. Understandably the nation was horrified, and an inquest was held in an upstairs room at the Park Tavern in Station Road, Penge, at the end of Forbes Road.
Two brothers named Patrick and Louis Staunton were charged along with their mistresses, sisters, Elizabeth and Alice Rhodes with the murder of Harriet Staunton, whom Louis had married earlier, probably for her money.
Harriet and her baby died through neglect and starvation, rather than murder, but these two deaths caused a local and national outcry.

Christine,
I have done yet more digging and interestingly, on the 1861 census, there is recorded a Mary A Brace, but when I looked on the original, lo and behiold, it should read Mary A BREEZE!! I guess this is the wife of James Breeze (ex-partner) a sister of James Richard.

Hi Sablon,
Thanks for the message.
You are quite right, both James Breeze's birth and death info bears out that he is the right man.
I have his name on a birth certificate for Florence - daughter of James Breeze and Elizabeth Isabel Stead (1897)
I also have Elizabeth Isabella's and Albert James Purkiss's names on the brth certificate for Louisa May Purkiss (1908) see also 191 census.
I will check out however the Smiths of Bolton, but I fear it is too soon after the demise of James Breeze.

Hi Christine,
I did some checking regarding the Birling Smiths and you are right, James Richard Smith (1822) married to a Jemima sired James Breeze Walter Smith in 1868. James Breeze was named after his father's ex-partner James Breeze (1929) see 1851 census. James Richard continued to live in Birling for most of his marred life. In the 1861 census, his wife was named as Jane (Harwich 1829) but in the 1871 census she named herself as Jemima (Harwich 1829) NOTE: James Breeze was born in Queensborough Isle of Sheppey about 1829)
Confused?...........you will be (or are you already?)
Peter
ps I wonder what happened in Penge 1877??

Although Elizabeth was registered in Croydon She was born in Penge Kent.
Penge formed a part of the parish of Battersea, with the historic county boundary between Kent and Surrey forming its eastern boundary.[1] In 1855 both parts of the parish were included in the area of the Metropolitan Board of Works, with Penge Hamlet Vestry electing six members to the Lewisham District Board of Works.[2] The Local Government Act 1888 abolished the Metropolitan Board, with its area becoming the County of London. However the London Government Act 1899 subsequently made provision for Penge to be removed from the County of London and annexed to either Surrey or Kent. Accordingly, an order in council transferred the hamlet to Kent in 1900, constituting it as Penge Urban District.[3] The urban district was abolished in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963, and its former area merged with that of other districts to form the London Borough of Bromley. With the creation of the Penge Urban District, Penge New Road (formerly the part of Beckenham Road north of Kent House Road) was renamed Penge High Street.
From 1885 the Hamlet of Penge was a ward of the Dulwich (UK Parliament constituency)(then in Surrey) and remained in that electorate until 1918 when it was transferred to the new Bromley (UK Parliament constituency). From 1950 to the present it has been in the Beckenham (UK Parliament Constituency). In future elections Penge will become part of Lewisham West and Penge (UK Parliament constituency)
In the Victorian era Penge developed into a fashionable suburb because of its proximity to the relocated Crystal Palace. By 1862 Stanford's map of London[1] shows large homes had been constructed along Penge New Road (now Crystal Palace Park Road and Penge High Street), Thick Wood (now Thicket) Road and Anerley Road. This all came to an end with the notorious Penge Murders of 1877
