You are all brilliant - thank you so much. Despite the 'Wimbledon' skits I have a copy of his marriage certificate where he does own up to the middle name of Womble.
Once more many thanks

Once again many thanks to all who helped in my search especially Julie who came up with the goods.
I now have a copy of the birth certificate and must confess that all this time I thought my mother and her forebears were Curtis' they were in fact WOMBELLS!!!
The birth entry shows George's father was Joseph Wombell and his mother was Ann Wombell formerly Baker.
To cap it all you will love Joseph's occupation - he was a Quack Doctor - just about says it all really.
I cannot trace any further back but am intrigued that in 1856 a James Curtis Wombell born c.1836 married in York in 1856 so Curtis must be a family name from somewhere.

Again many thanks

Thanks Julie
I'm beginning to think he must have been quite a character!! He has appeared on censuses as John/Joseph Wombell/Wambell, John/Joseph Curtis. A Quack Doctor, a Travelling Doctor, a Herbalist, a Labourer, and a Gardener.
He also gives varying places of birth!!
I think I'll leave him alone for a while
Regards
Sally

From new thread: http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1274857

You kindly helped me find George's birth in Sheriff Hutton (he was registered as George Curtis Wombell) but now I cannot find his death. The only likely death I could find was in 1911 in Lincoln but the certificate proved me wrong.
His wife Eliza died in 1896 and I cannot find George on the 1901 or 1911 censuses unless he is the one shown as a Visitor in Norfolk in 1901, I cannot read the occupation on that census return but I think it's ?????? Lecturer. George had several occupations which included Chemistry Lecturer, Entertainments Lecturer, and Exhibitor of Pictures to name a few.
He was shown as living on his son Ernest's marriage certificate in March 1901, but was not living with Ernest on the 1901 census.
I cannot find any of his 3 other children on the 1901 census but can find them on the 1911 census.
His other children were:
Violet Annie b.1875 Sowerby, Yorkshire
Olive M b. 1886 West Lilling, Yorkshire
Harold James b.1891 Wes Lilling, Yorkshire.
(All the children are named Curtis not Wombell)
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
