It's such a shame that GR don't have a 'Helpful Hints' item at the top of each page. It needn't be long winded, just enough to tell folks that replies don't come by email and that they need to stay by their computers to watch for replies and then also tell them how to access their threads. They should remember that not every one who uses this site is computer literate.

Sylvia - if you let me know the details I will try to look for you if you still want the info - not sure where exactly tour contact was talking about but will see what I can find.

re 1851 census for manchester - a lot of pages were water damaged and unreadable by the filming tecquniques at the time. 80 of lost records for Manchester itself plus areas of Chorlton, Salford, Oldham & Ashton-under-Lyne have now been transcribed. A free name index is at www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk with astreet index in progress. Results give name, district & street with aref no to enable people to order full details on CD if required.

I will put this on the tips board as well.

I have to say how chuffed I am though!

Well over a year ago, someone directed me to the damaged sheets for Manchester on the 1851 census which were being worked on and put on the web on FamilyHistory.

I found my 2x ggrandfather who had been a stumbling block as he died before 1861 and I had no idea where he was born. The records did not however say where he had been born, so I go no further forward, except knowing he was still alive in 1851!

Since then, I have made contact with another descendent of Benjamin, who is also stuck with where he was born, parents etc.

Over the weekend, I saw a comment by someone on these boards saying that FamilyHistory was closing down and records were going to findmypast.

I thought I would do a quick look to see if I could find any of my lost souls, bought some credits ........ and decided to do a re-look at that 1851 page for Benjamin.

His birthplace had been added!!! He was born in Birstall Yorkshire, not Lancashire as we thought.

Huge leaps forward, as there now seem to be 3 people on GR who have a Benjamin born 1814 Birstall!

Keep you fingers crossed that we might now get further back!

I hope I am not the one who offered to do research in Preston for you if so I apologise and Yes I have lost the scrap of paper I wrote it on.
I admit I sometimes offer to do look up at the CRO and then get engrossed in just one of them & don't get round to the rest on that visit.
If anyone reading this is waiting for a look up from me PLEASE resend me the info by PM and I'll try not to lose it this time.

Daphne

so far as I know trees remain on here for ever ........ unless a person removes the tree themself.

This is one of the unfortunate features in that you don't know whether the owner of a tree is still active.

Another reason for you not getting a response may be that the person concerned has changed their email address and not notified GR that this has happened. GR sends notification to the address they have, but ...............

Another reason is that the person may well have lost interest!

Having said that, I have seen people report that they have received an answer to a contact more than a year later!

look to the left of your screen.

You should see a yellow box, with a man in a top hat.

There are 4 headings in the box :-
