There are so many durkins - and most of them use the same christian names ...... at one point I was looking for the connection in grandmothers side and then realised I was mixing them up with grandfathers side

There's loads of Stone Mason Labourers. I found a James 25 years (1881), SML - Mother Bridget - & thesame in 1871 when James is listed as being 14. is there any possibility that I might be right?

Thanks for replying to my query earler. Here goes for the second time, I keep typing away and then somehow losing it. Anyway back to grandfather James Durkin - have found census 1891 - address 73 Chassum St, (same as his birth cert.) he's not there, nor is he on 1901 at same address. I suppose I don't need to worry to much do I as b. cert. confirms I have right Durkin family!!

His parents correct (James & Mary) + Catherine 11 months (1891) & at 1901 Mary A and Winifred extra. So I thought well I'll try GGFather James (1854c) - There's loads that

Just in from work and almost straight on it again! You've both obviously been busy on my behalf thanks again. I'm trying to piece in the births and deaths of them all first before I try the (James Durkin) the grandfather's side - I'm almost dreading it - surely it won't be as complicated.

I have still not found bridget durkin in 1861 with her husband john, although they may not be married then.
Have not found there marriage, but that could of taken place in ireland.

You have confirmed everything I was following - I have so much info now that I have had to start a 'little tree' on my home family tree programme so that I can sort it all into some kind of order.

Thanks for that Richard, I suppose it makes sense, also whilst looking at what you've sent it's obvious that you've gone through the whole family at different times. I keep going between ancestry and this one and sometimes forget to use other sites, especially the free one!!

Searching does get easier with practice, sometimes imputing to much info into a search can be a hindrance.
If you have a lot of trouble especially with the surname leave that out of the search, or town.

I searched the 1871 cencus without using ann durkins surname and noticed when i found ann dowhans mothers name was the same, i then checked the image and noticed that it had been mistranscribed plus the other childrens names and places of birth fit.

John McGlen's father died before he married but not mentioned on marriage certificate - strange.

One question I would like to ask is - "Is it just with practice that you're able to click straight away, I don't think I would have considered that grandmother would have been born in Sundeland area, then I would have missed all this info and probably never have got there. Is there a specific way to approach doing this - which comes first births or marriages. I feel like I keep going over things to make sure I'm right, which then in turns seems to confuse me even more.
