From the previous post:

"phyllis florence i have no information on these two only that my grandad told me one of them died a spinster in a nursing home in wells somerset"

Well, that sounds like the Florence I identified -- born 1877, died 1908, both in Wells.

But it just isn't reasonable to think that the same woman was having children in 1877 and in the 1920s. Barely even reasonable to think the same man was doing it.

And I identified that Florence's parents. Is it likely that there were two Florence Olivers who died unmarried in Wells, Somerset? It's possible that a Florence did, a generation later, of course.

This is one of the sisters of Florence who was born 1877 and died 1908:

Births Mar 1880 (>99%)
Oliver Ellen Maud M Wells 5c 538

I see now that some time has been wasted here.

A post two weeks ago:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1097927

I know that if I had seen that, I would not have spent so much time here. Even in that thread, Jason, it was pointed out to you that you should provide all the information you have.

Florence was registered in Langport.

Is this another of the children?

Name: Clifford F Oliver
Year of Registration: 1912
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Oliver
District: Langport
County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 543

From 1880 to 1920 in Langport, there are those two births and this one:

Name: Theodore C Oliver
Year of Registration: 1920
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's Maiden Name: Vines
District: Langport
County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 632

Are you sure they are all children of your John Oliver and Maud Vines?

This must be the birth of the Florence Emma Oliver who died 1908 in Wells at age 30.

Name: Florence Emma Oliver
Year of Registration: 1877
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Wells
County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 520

I see her in the 1881 and 1891 censuses, parents William and Emma in 1881, servant in 1891, but not 1901. Just wondering whether she might be a sister of your John, given the name and location.

But by 1891, her mother Emma appears to be recently widowed and the other children are with Oliver grandparents.

It would be interesting to know what the spacing of the children was.

I might suspect that John Oliver had an early marriage and possibly children, and wasn't married to Maud Vines.

I took a stab at this, but it's a little difficult because the info in the thread is so scattered!

Anthony's birth was registered 1923 in Wells.

These are the Oliver events registered in Wells around that time, as so far available at Freebmd.

Births Jun 1923
Oliver Lilian M Oliver Wells 5c 647
(the daughter where the mother's maiden name apparently wasn't given? -- unless it's on the certificate and an error was made in the index?)

Births Dec 1923
Oliver Anthony J Vince Wells 5c 617

Marriages Mar 1925
Oliver Florence E Whitcombe Wells 5c 685
Whitcombe Arthur Oliver Wells 5c 685

Is that the marriage of daughter Florence born 1904 in Langport? --

Births Jun 1904
Oliver Florence Lilian Langport 5c 313
(Except the daughter was Florence L, not E.)

Is this a grandchild of John Oliver and Maud Vince perhaps? --

Births Sep 1926
Oliver Leah Jacobs Wells 5c 590
Deaths Sep 1926
Oliver Leah 0 Wells 5c 438

This looks like the only marriage with spouses Oliver and Jacobs, but not in the right area:

Marriages Sep 1923
Jacobs Annie Oliver Grimsby 7a 1687
Oliver James D Jacobs Grimsby 7a 1687

This is a James D Oliver born in Hampshire around when Florence was born there; is he a son? --

Births Sep 1903
Oliver James Daniel Whitchurch H 2c 238

This is a coincidental death. Could John Oliver have been widowed and then remarried?

Deaths Jun 1908
OLIVER Florence Emma 30 Wells 5c 293

John and Maud seem to have had children over a fairly long period period of time, and to have moved around.

Do you have the year and place of the earliest birth, Jason?

Samspade Report 10 Nov 2008 11:33

There is definitely something fishy going on here.

one possibility is she was Maude Oliver at birth married a Vince then married a Oliver again.Think you will have to order Cliffords cert x
