Hi.
My Gt uncle & his wife went off to America between 1882 - 1893. I need help in finding them to see if they had any family.
Their names were James Martin BROWELL & Thomasin(a) nee Todd. They were married in Newcastle upon Tyne 1882.
James died in The Union Home. Colorado Springs. USA. on 30 November 1893.
Thank you. Linda x

I can't find a James Browell on Castle Garden or Ellis Island, but most records from 1892 on were destroyed by an 1897 fire at Ellis Island. http://www.castlegarden.org/ http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp nor can I find an incoming record for Thomasin's return to the UK.
I can't find a suitable Thom* Browell, nor an Ina/Ena Browell in US 1900, nor any suitable Browell in CO 1900.

Thank you Rose & Lisa for that information.
I only had James on Census with his parents & siblings. I found his death by accident in the local paper in England.
Yes, he was born in 1858.
Many thanks. Linda x

Hi Linda:
Like others, I couldn't find any additional information about immigration. I tried looking for Thomasin(a) in 1900 (with a different surname, but didn't see anything. Is there a chance that she could have returned to England? (I am on my way to work, so I won't see your answer until tonight.)
PS You could try writing to the cemetery office and see if they will give you additional information. The cemetery staffs in Canada have been very helpful to me; perhaps they may be to you as well, especially since you have most of the information you would need to check the records.

Hi Lisa.
Thanks for the above help. I am now stepping into a new territory as I am in England. So far I have been unable to find any marriage of Thomasin(a) or on the 1901 Census. but, never mind, she may turn up one day!
Thanks again. Linda x

Hi Linda:
This is the address I found: Evergreen Cemetery 1005 S. Hancock Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903 Office Hours 8 a.m-5 p.m. Monday through Friday Saturday 8 a.m. - Noon phone (719) 578-6646 fax (719) 578-6077
When I wrote to offices in Canada, I explained that I was living in California and was working on my family tree. They were all very helpful (I think especially since they knew I couldn't just drop by the cemetery). A few years ago I wrote asking for my gr-gr-grandfather's information (and who might be buried in his plot) and mentioned his first wife's name and that she died before him. The wonderful staff member not only gave me all of the information about my gr-gr-grandfather's plot, she also found his first wife's burial information!
I'm not sure how to obtain his certificate; I will look around and be back here shortly (I'm Canadian and have only ordered one certificate from the states). PS It's best to order certificates from the state offices, not private companies, as it is less expensive.
By the way, do you know his occupation, please? ------------------ After a quick glance, it appears that this is a government site (and one that you want): http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/certs/birth.html I believe the "VitalCheck" site mentioned on the above site is one of those sites that charges more than you need to pay. Because he died prior to 1900, it looks like you have to order the certificate through the county where the death occurred; believe the county is El Paso. --------------------- Have you tried asking for a lookup to see if Thomasina went back to the UK? It looks like the date ranges offered are 1878-1960. There is a Mrs. T.B. Browell arriving in Southampton, England, but I cannot view further details. Do you know if Thomasina was known by any other name? Do you know when she was born, please?

Thank you, Alviegal. She probably would have remarried after her husband died, but you never know. I will look again on U.S. census records to see if I can find them. Thank you again.
After a quick look, I don't see either Thomasina or Eleonor in America.

Hi.
I found a birth of a Thomasin Barker Todd born 1864 Chester le Street. County Durham. England. That could be a her, ..Also the name Eleanor is very prominent in the Browell line too.
Could Thomasin apply for Citizenship in Usa at that time.

Hi Linda: I'm not sure what "time" you mean (before arriving in the states, or after), but when trying to help other people, I have seen several naturalization records. So, yes, she could have applied for citizenship once she arrived in the states. I believe they had to be in the states for 3 years, then wait another 4???
Are you able to find a birth for Eleonor?

"Congress passed the first law regulating naturalization in 1790 (1 Stat. 103). As a general rule, naturalization was a two-step process that took a minimum of 5 years. After residing in the United States for 2 years, an alien could file a "declaration of intent" (so-called "first papers") to become a citizen. After 3 additional years, the alien could "petition for naturalization." After the petition was granted, a certificate of citizenship was issued to the alien. These two steps did not have to take place in the same court. As a general rule, the "declaration of intent" generally contains more genealogically useful information than the "petition." The "declaration" may include the alien's month and year (or possibly the exact date) of immigration into the United States." http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/naturalization.html

Linda: I wonder if you can follow up on this somehow?
http://genealogytrails.com/colo/elpaso/news/misc.html
Miscellaneous newspaper articles about El Paso County "March 28, 1893 Middletown Daily Times, Middletown New York Criticises the Printers' Home. Indianapolis, March 28-James Browell, formerly a printer in this city, now at the Union Printers' home at Colorado Springs, Colo., has written a letter to a friend here in which he makes serious charges against the management."
There is no mention of his wife. I wonder if she stayed in New York, or if she died prior to James?
Are you sure this James is your James? I wonder why he would be in a printers' home? ------------------------- If this was your James, perhaps he was ill. It is quite a bit larger than I imagined! You can google, to find out information about it. eBay has a postcard dated c1920. (Cannot copy address; it's too long to fit here.)
http://www.westword.com/1994-05-11/news/the-castle-on-the-hill/ One article about the home.
