Brummiejan, spent a good bit of time looking for the baptism of your Thomas Hanks, but no joy. Lots similar
4/5/1795 Thomas Hanks son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth in Kirtlington..
9/6/1791 Thomas Hanks son of Joseph and Mary...Islip

Anyway here is what is certain.
Thomas Hanks married Mary Taylor in Wendlebury 6/4/1836
Thomas Hanks was buried in Islip 4/5/1878 aged 74 yrs of Middle Street Islip
Mary Hanks was buried in Islip 2/6/1867 aged 60 yrs of Islip.

Thomas Hanks and Mary nee Taylor had the following children baptised
5/6/1836 Elizabeth in Wendlebury
13/8/1837 John in Islip
2/8/1840 William in Islip.

Here is rundown of the Islip Hanks....

John Hanks baptised 27/9/1697 born 23/9/1697 son of Thomas and Martha Hanks
married in Oxford St Mary Magdalene 26/9/1730
Elizabeth Peesley who had been baptised 3/12/1706 in Hampton Poyle,

They had
John Hanks baptised Islip 24/11/1730
Jeremiah bapt Islip 21/9/1742
Thomas bapt 1/12/1731....
I think from one of these three children your Thomas Hanks 1804 may have been descended.... I cannot find the connection, perhaps you will have better luck, or someone else will....

Hi Margaret

Is there any way of finding out whether Edward William Matthews was single, widowed or even divorced when he married Augusta Irene Robbins in Jul-Aug-Sept of 1919? They were married in Banbury but moved to Wrexham very soon after.

Many thanks.

BARBARA
William E. Davis married 1915 Reading
Thurza E.E. Wharton
she had been baptised 1/9/1895 Stanton St John and died 1922 Headington Registration District
They had Stewart Eric Davis born 3/6/1919 as per your information.

Thurza Emily Elaine Wharton was the child of
Thomas James Wharton a blacksmith, and Lily Bessie Maria Lathan
Thomas James Wharton was baptised 8/4/1860 Stanton St John and married 1886 Colchester as Thomas James Wynne to
Lily Bessie Maria Lathan who had been born
1863 in Calcutta India
Lily was buried 14/7/1937 aged 76 yrs in Stanton St John
she stated on the 1911 census that she had 6 children all living and that she was a Charwoman, and resident of England.
On various census she used the name Lily Wharton Wynne. She can only be found with 4 of her children on the census.
They were
Ruby Florence Beatrice baptised 2/4/1893 born in Norwich from the census but baptised in Stanton St John as Ruby Florence Beatrice Wharton alias Wynne
Thirza Emily Ellen Wharton baptised 1/9/1895 Stanton St John, alias Wynne
Harry George Oby Wharton 11/3/1898 alias Wynne
Frank John 1/4/1900 Wynne, alias Wharton...
I have not found out why Thomas James Wharton used the alias Wynne, but it him alright, as he is mentioned as father on all the baptisms.

There is a burial in Stanton St John of
William Thomas James Wharton 2/11/1953 of Maiden ERleigh Stud Farm in Earley Reading, aged 64 yrs
this may be a child of Thomas James Wharton and Lily nee Lathan. Born in Norfolk before they moved to Stanton St John.
I cannot find Thomas James Wharton -Wynne living with his wife Lily nee Lathan on the census, so he may have had a living in position perhaps where William Thomas James Wharton was working when he died in 1953 at Erleigh Stud.?

Thomas James Wharton was the child of
James Wharton baptised 18/12/1830 Stanton St John married in 1854 to Emma Gray baptised 26/2/1832 Chalgrove daughter of John Gray and Charlotte who had married in Newington 24/10/1831 she was Charlotte Jenning at marriage.

Charles 26/12/1866
Emily 25/7/1869
Eleanor 26/2/1870

Job was baptised 6/10/1793 Wolvercote and married 13/5/1816 Oxford St Michael by License witnesses Jane Randle, Isaac bryant
Chalotte Strange was living at Oxford St Michael at her marriage but not baptised there.
Job Wharton 1793 was the son of
James Wharton baptised 31/12/1752 in Steeple Barton and married 25/10/1778 in Moreton in Marsh then in Gloucestershire to
Hannah Brown who was buried 12/2/1797 Wolvercote.
James Wharton 1752 was a witness at very many marriages in Wolvercote.
James Wharton 1752 and Hannah nee Brown had the following chidlren baptised in Wolvercote
James 17/10/1779
Phoebe 13/1/1782
Henry 18/1/1784
William 22/5/1785
Elizabeth 25/2/1787
Hannah 17/1/1790
Job 6/10/1793
Hannah 7/8/1796

James Wharton baptised 31/12/1752 Steeple Barton was the son of
Henry Wharton baptised 5/12/1725 in Steeple Barton and Elizabeth Unknown

Henry Wharton baptised 5/12/1725 Steeple Barton was the son of

Elizabeth 2/12/1744
Sarah 3/4/1748
Elizabeth was buried 22/4/1745 Steeple Barton
Sarah was buried 11/6/1749 Steeple Barton
Anne 1742 married Thomas Hopkins in Steeple Barton 9/6/1766 he was of Great Tew.

Both Henry Wharton 1725 and James Wharton 1721 were the sons of James Wharton, no mother given on the baptismal record.
I have also sent this by email.
Hope it helps.

MARY
There are two baptisms which could be for your William Judd, neither of which are buried in Witney up to 1872. when the transcript finishes.
William Judd 27/12/1803 son of Stephen and Elizabeth
William Judd 27/1/1805 son of William and Anne

on the 1851 there is a Thomas Rowles a Weaver born in Witney staying with William Judd 46 yrs born Witney and Elizabeth 47 yrs born London Middx
Thomas 13 yrs
William 12 yrs
Frederick 8 yrs

So a marriage in Witney of
William Judd to Elizabeth Rowles 5/2/1826 witnesses William Walker, and Elizabeth Walker looks to be the correct one.

From the burials in Witney Cemetery
William Judd of Lowells Yard aged 19 yrs 31/5/1858
probably the son of the William Judd on the above 1851 census.

There are other burials of Judds from Lowells Yard and Place
William Judd 10/3/1862 15 montsh Corn Street
Frederick 2/7/1907 25 yrs Lowells Place
Elizabeth 1 and half yrs Lowells Yard 2/12/1857
Elizabeth 11/4/1901 aged either 49 or 44 yrs from Lowells Place
all buried in Witney Cemetery.

William Judd 1 yrs 9/1/1833 buried in Witney
William Judd aged 97 yrs buried in Witney 24/6/1851
William Judd aged 19 yrs 23/8/1853

None of these seem to apply to the two baptisms given for William Judds.
Pehaps you will be able to say which baptism applies to your Wm Judd.

Hi Margaret,
Thank you so much for that look up.
I think the birth I am looking for, will be the
William Judd b. 27/12/1803 to Stephen and Elizabeth Judd, simply because William named his second son Stephen.
By April 1834 William was living in Odiham, Hampshire and married for the second time.
I only thought his first marriage might have been on Oxfordshire, as I can find no first marriage in Odiham.
Do you have anymore details going backwards from Stephen and Elizabeth ?

Mary

These marriages could apply to your Stephen Judd

Stephen Judd a sojourner, married in Southleigh Sarah Brown
16/4/1781 witnesses William Brain, Elizabeth Brown.

Stephen Judd married Witney St mary Mary Harbud 14/7/1796 by License
witnesses Elizabeth Calcutt, Thomas Taylor

Stephen Judd a widower married in Witney St Mary Elizabeth Mathews 10/11/1802 witnesses Ann mansell, Sarah Mathews, William Mathews

BURIALS IN WITNEY
Mary Judd 1798
Stephen Judd 16/1/1811
Elizabeth Judd 11/6/1830 aged 49 yrs
Elizabeth Judd aged 3 yrs of Lowells Yard.

There is a marriage of a William Judd 13/3/1799 a sojourner to Ann dutton in Witney St Mary witnesses Elizabeth Judd, Edward Shorter.

Also William Judd was a witness at a marriage in 1797.

So Stephen Judd, and William Judd, were both sojourners at their marriages in Witney, so both outsiders, neither baptised in Witney.

JENNIFER W.
Request by email for information regarding Charles Trinder c 1816 Stanton Harcourt Oxfordshire.
William Trinder of Binsey at his marriage to
Elizabeth Waring of Begbroke at her marriage to above
in Oxford St Thomas 24/11/1713

William Trinder was buried 12/6/1747 Stanton Harcourt,
Elizabeth nee Waring was buried as a widow 16/3/1763 in Stanton Harcourt

William and Elizabeth Trinder had the following children baptised in Stanton Harcourt
John 24/4/1715
Mary 17/3/1716
William 8/4/1722
Henrey 8/4/1722
Thomas 13/9/1724
Richard 26/2/1727

JOHN TRINDER baptised 24/4/1715 Stanton Harcourt married in Witney
Martha Kent 6/7/1740 both of Sutton Green a hamlet in Stanton Harcourt Parish. They married by License.
John and Martha Trinder baptised in Stanton Harcourt the following children

Mary 16/4/1744
William 24/8/1746 aged 14 days and buried 21/9/1762 Stanton Harcourt.

I cannot find a baptism for a John Trinder circa 1742, but feel John and Martha Trinder are the most obvious parents of a John Trinder buried in Stanton Harcourt 4/11/1821 aged 79 yrs. John and Martha married away from their home in Stanton Harcourt, so John Trinder buried 4/11/1821 may well have been born whilst they were working elsewhere.

JOHN TRINDER BORN Circa 1742 unknown place buried 4/11/1821 aged 79 yrs Stanton Harcourt
married Jenny Aldsworth by License in Stanton Harcourt witnesses Thomas Sirman,William Crutch. 20/12/1770
They baptised in Stanton Harcourt the following children, with Jenny nee Aldsworth being referred to as Jane Trinder. on the baptisms of her children.
William 17/4/1771
Martha 9/12/1773
Mary 9/12/1773
James 17/11/1778

WILLIAM TRINDER baptised 17/4/1771 Stanton Harcourt married an Ann born about 1776 in Ramsden, but not in Oxfordshire. so cannot give the details of the marriage. Ann was buried in Stanton Harcourt in 6/2/1855 aged 78 yrs
They baptised the following children in Stanton Harcourt
Martha 10/5/1795
John 28/5/1797
James 22/12/1799
for the next few years the registers were retained by the former Curate, up to 1802, so some baptisms may be missing for this family
William 15/9/1805
Sophia 7/6/1807
Joseph 24/6/1808
Charlotte 10/2/1811
Thomas 18/10/1812
William 22/1/1815 his parents were living at Tar Farm Southleigh at this time
Mary Ann 5/1/1817 parents living at Sutton Green

JOHN TRINDER baptised 28/5/1797 Stanton Harcourt married Ann Lucker in Stanton Harcourt 10/5/1814, witnesses William Trinder, Ann Sirman, and Ann Trinder..
Ann Lucker was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize 3/7/1796 daughter of Joseph and Mary Lucker.

John and Ann Trinder baptised the following children in Stanton Harcourt

CHARLES TRINDER 9/5/1815 son of John and Ann he a labourer of Sutton Green, in the Parish of Stanton Harcourt.
Joseph 29/6/1817 born 27/6/1817
William 19/3/1820 born 14/3/1820
Sarah 14/9/1823 baorn 7/9/1823
John 9/7/1826 born 25/6/1826
Henry 16/8/1829 born 30/7/1829 buried 21/11/1852 aged 23 yrs Stanton Harcourt
Elizabeth 24/6/1832 born 23/6/1832
Ann born circa 1837 no baptism but there on the census
Hannah 5/1/1840 born 29/12/1840
James 5/1/1840 born 29/12/1840

So there is Charles Trinder baptised 9/5/1815 Stanton Harcourt, following him on the census, he married a Mary and is a shepherd.

Hope that Jennifer gets back in touch, leaving information here for her, as it will soon get lost under the piles of paper that seem to litter the table near the computer.

Hi Margaret,

You helped me in the past and gave me very valuable information regarding my ancestors. Since then I've moved on to 'fringe' members in an effort to see where everyone 'stretched out' to. However, I've come accross one set of people that are getting me really confused.
I'd better list down what I've traced so far on GR with the limited means and would be very grateful if you'd let me know your view on it.

1841 Beinton, Caversfield Bucks (which I think came under Bicester)
Susanna New 40
Joseph New 10
William New 5

1851 @ Crockwell, Bicester
John Walduck 68 Tailor b Marsh Bibbon Bucks
SusanWalduck 52 b Fringdon (?) Oxon
Rebecca Walduck 8 b Bicester
Joseph New son-in-law 22 Ag lab b Caversfield
William New son-in-law 17 ag lab b Caversfield

1861 @ Crockwell
Joseph New 31 Ag lab b Caversfield
Maria New 26 b Bicester

Marriage Joseph New = Maria March Jul qtr 1860 Bicester 3A - 784

Death Maria New Ap qtr 1864 Bicester 3A - 391

Marriage Joseph New = Catherine Penn Jan qtr 1867 Bicester

1871 @ Crockwell Bicester
Joseph New 42 Ag lab b Beinton
Catherine New 30 Lace maker b Bicester
George Penn son-in-law 8 b ?
Edward Penn son-in-law 6 b ?
Rebecca Ann New 4 b Bicester
Susan Walduck mother - widow- 70 b Fringford

1841 @ Bicester
John Walduck 55 Tailor
Charles Walduck 15

Births - George Penn Jan qtr 1863 Bicester
Edward Penn Jul qtr 1864 Bicester

That's about as far as I've managed to trace, I can't get any line on Catherine Penn/New or Susan Walduck try as I might. I hope this is not expecting too much of you but I would love to solve the puzzle of who's who in that lot.

Many thanks and regards (in case you want to tackle this!!!)

Joanna Report 9 Feb 2012 22:13

Hello Margaret,

I am trying to figure out if there is a connection between two branches of my Maylard/Maylord families who lived in Bladon. I have Martin Maylard (1690-1732) marrying Jane/Joana Bartlett in 1720. They have a son William (1722-1750) and a son Martin (1728-1737). William (1722-1750) marries Hester Halford in 1745 and they have Sarah (1747-1747) and William Bartlett Maylard (1750-1829). William Bartlett Maylard marries Elizabeth Day and has a number of children including Martin (1793-1878). All the above men born in Bladon.

On the other hand, I have Martin Maylard (may be born in Hensington or Bladon) unknown birthdate who marries Elizabeth Norris in Oxford in 1747. They have a son Martin born 1754.

Here is my question: I know that Martin and Jane had one son Martin 1728-1737. Did they have another son named Martin around the same time and this is the Martin Maylard who married Elizabeth Norris?

Many thanks for any light you are able to shed on this!
