Hi Margaret
I am looking for the batptism of a Caroline Smith, born 1844 approx. in Towersey (this is now in Oxon but has at times been in Bucks so not sure if you have the records). Father I think Emanuel Smith and mother Mary Smith nee Andrews. I have sent off for 2 birth certs for her but neither is the right one so I am now thinking her birth wasn't registered.
In the same parish I am looking for a baptism for Thomas Smith born 4th September 1861. I have his birth cert which has his mother's name as Caroline Smith and no father, just wondering if the baptism record might show a father's name.
Many thanks in advance for your kind offer of help.

HELEN These are the children Emanuel and Mary Smith had baptised in Towersey
23/2/1840 Elizabeth
1/12/1844 Martha
6/6/1847 Maria
17/2/1850 Eliza
22/7/1855 Annie
11/3/1862 Emma
I looked on the 1841 census, and Elizabeth is there aged 1 yr
I looked on the 1851 census and Caroline is there aged 10 yrs, in between Elizabeth and Martha, so she exists, but is not baptised in Towersey. I know you have looked at these records yourself, but I needed to look myself for corroboration of what I found in the transcripts.
I wonder if she was baptised in Westcott Bucks where her mother came from, I do not have these records, but you could ask the Bucks family history society if they would have a look for you.
Emanuel Smith was buried aged 81 yrs Towersey 23/11/1900
Mary Smith was buried aged 48 yrs 5/12/1863 Towersey.
As for the Thomas Smith baptism, there is not one in 1861 or thereabouts in Towersey, but is Caroline in Brill at that date? as a dairymaid? if so perhaps the child was baptised there.
There is a baptism for
Thomas William Smith baseborn son of Marie Smith baptised Towersey 16/5/1869
Hope you find the baptism for Caroline, and Thomas soon, Margaret.

Hi Margaret, I wonder if I could prevail on your good nature and ask for another look up, please let me know if this is going beyond the call of duty!
You recently looked up various Smiths in Towersey for me. I think the Thomas William Smith you found could be my husband's g-grandfather (I think the cert I have for Thomas Smith son of Caroline could be the wrong one). I think Thomas William "baseborn" son of Maria cold be my man and I think Maria and Caroline were sisters, although we haven't found Caroline on the baptism records. I think the 1871 census with a Thomas and a William both grandsons of Emanuel Smith could hold the clue as I think William could be Thomas William ... oh if only there was someone to ask who remembered!
Please could you look up a marriage between Maria Smith and Joseph Brackley in Towersey in the summer of 1881 and let me know who their fathers are (if this is shown in the records).
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Margaret
I wonder if you would be good enough to help me with another query.
My 3G grandmother, Mary UNKNOWN, married Michael IVEY in around 1820 in the Oxford/Abingdon area. I have been unable to find a marriage ref for this on the IGI to find out her maiden surname.
Michael IVEY died in 1845 in Abingdon. Mary IVEY, his widow, then remarried a Charles COOK on 20th October 1856 at St Michael's parish church in Oxford.
I have her marriage cert where she is named Mary IVEY with no other name, e.g. maiden name given, age 52, widow, her father's name is given as John IVEY (which is strange, as IVEY is her name from her first marriage not her maiden name).
I know its the right marriage as three of her children, including my 2G grandmother, are witnesses.
My query is whether the original parish register for this marriage shows her maiden name and/or a different name for her father.
I'd be very grateful if you could have a look for me.
Many thanks
Helen

Barb, that makes much more sense, thank you, the marriage cert has her father as John IVEY and his occupation as "gardner". Also Susan, her daughter, the witness on cert as IVEY, when by that point she was married to Joseph HYDE, so Susan HYDE makes much more sense. Arthur IVEY and Zettila IVEY are Mary's children. Will try to find her as Mary Gardner and see if I can track down her birth. Many thanks, Helen

Hi Margaret,
Could you help me by finding anything for my Gx3 Grandfather William Luckett (born c1790 Hook Norton).
I have him in 1841 census with wife Ann ? (born c1796 Oxfordshire) in 1841. Ann died before 1851 census. The oldest child I have is William (born c1820 Hook Norton) - can you find a marriage pre1820 in Hook Norton? William is listed as Ag Lab/shepherd in censuses.
I would like a marriage to give me Ann maiden name, and/or a baptism for William (c1790), if possible.
Many thanks & regards,
Corinne Luckett

CORINNE
William Luckett bachelor of this parish married in Hook Norton 25/10/1818
Ann Izod who made her mark, spinster of this parish, but not baptised there by Banns witnesses Benjamin Busby, Mary Izod who made her mark, Joseph Phipps
There is a baptism in Hook Norton for
William Luckett 6/12/1789 son of William and Margaret
I can find no marriage in oxfordshire for William and Margaret.
There is a baptism in Hook Norton for
William Luckett son of William
also one for
Thomas Luckett son of William and Mary
19/8/1770, so if William is the brother of Thomas his parents are William and Mary as well.
There are no marriages in Hook Norton for William Luckett and Mary but There is a marriage in Swerford for
William Luckett of Radford parish of Enstone to Mary Hitchman 17/3/1765 he a labourer by Banns she spinster of this parish witnesses John Woodeard, John Whiter.
there are no children born in Swerford nor in Enstone, so probably he took her back to Hook Norton to have their family.ieThomas 1770 and William 1768.
It would be nice to go back further but there are 3 William Lucketts born in 5 years, in Hook Norton, and it is not possible quickly to decide which is the William's baptism of the chap who married Mary Hitchman
Hope this helps.

Hi Margaret,
Thanks for the Luckett info. A follow-up request, if possible and if you have time..
"There is a baptism in Hook Norton for
William Luckett 6/12/1789 son of William and Margaret"
Could you look and see if their are any likely baptisms for siblings of William (1789) in Hook Norton.
"William Luckett bachelor of this parish married in Hook Norton 25/10/1818
Ann Izod who made her mark, spinster of this parish, but not baptised there by Banns witnesses Benjamin Busby, Mary Izod who made her mark, Joseph Phipps"
Is it possible to look for any Ann Izod baptisms c1796 in Oxfordshire or do you need to search by parish? I'm not sure how common the name Izod was but have found censuses for Izod's from Chipping Norton - maybe you could look there?...
Thank you and best regards,
Corinne Luckett

CORRINNE
Sorry I keep getting chucked off by Genes perhaps my replies are too long...
There is a baptism in Hook Norton William Luckett buried 1822 in Hook Norton 5/12/1740 son of John Luckett There is a baptism for a Marget daughter of James Cokel 8/4/1744 I am not saying that this is the Margaret mother of the children, but the date agrees with her death age. There is another Marget baptised a couple of years earlier, but as they got the correct age at death for her husband, perhaps they managed it for her as well. I cannot find any marriages for Cokel on the marriage disc, so perhaps she should really be a Coker or Cockerell both of which are in Hook
