So how do you read it. We know Anthony and Edmund are father and son. Due to marriage certificate. We know Edmund married Nancy Ashworth in 1836. We know Anthony was born in 1821 and looking at the 1841 census he is living with Alice Wilkinson, wouldn’t that lead you to believe that she is his mum? If so then Edmund must have been with Alice?

Look again....................carefully. lol!

So Edmund marries Nancy Ashworth in 1847. However Anthony his son, on the 1841 census has a DoB of 1821.
Maybe Edmund was previously married to Alice living close by with offspring from first marriage and a Rachel Ashworth relative of Nancy! Very cosy!

Many thanks for all that information. It was the ancestors of Edmund whose DoB is reputedly 1801 and born in Padiham, where I have drawn a blank. It would also appear that Edmund raised two families at Whitaker or am I mistaken that Edmund is not the father of Anthony.?

As regards Beverley Wilkinson my cousin. Yes she married a Frederick Swindells in Tarleton and shortly after they were married emigrated to South Africa. They had at least one son, I believe called after his Grandad John, Christopher or Anthony as the case maybe
I also understand that Beverley and Fred split up within ten years of them emigrating.

This is the Wilkinson Wilkinson with Father Anthony but born a bit earlier than you suggest and certainly Anthony born much earlier than your post suggests
